The kissing of the ring has a few functions. The original purpose of the signet rings was the equivalent of a signature, showing that the document stamped in wax now carries the authority of the wearer of the ring (Kings, Pharaohs, The Pope, Elites, and others). The act of kissing it, (or more so, the ring stamping your lips), thus validates you. Kissing it also is a form of showing respect and submission towards the authority of the ring/wearer. While searching didn't give really give concrete evidence of its origins, I imagine it is modeled after the act of kissing the Pope's ring.
As far as other traditions that struck me as odd that I had to look deeper into was Kefi (Breaking plates during a wedding as an example). It's odd when you look at your own traditions and realize how silly it may be from other people perspective. Throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulder, knocking on wood - some are superstitions, some are deep rooted in religion, but it all comes across as odd to me :) |
