"Dad, can you take me to the park?" "Can ya, Dad? Just fifteen minutes." I was seven years-old when my father was killed unexpectedly. I never knew my mother. "Sure, but hurry up and get your homework done. You need to do good on your school work". "I know! I will." My Dad always said he worked hard so I wouldn't have to. He went off to his office as I grab my ball hat and headed for the door. He's hurrying behind, but just as I get to the screen door he calls out. "Hold up son, I need to make a phone call" I pause and murmur, "ok", and wait on the sidewalk leading from the front door. Within a few minutes my Dad comes running, "Hey Major, wanna race to that tree? Come on! It'll be fun!" "Ok. Ready...set...go!" I always tried my hardest I never wanted to disappoint him. "Wow, Major. You sure run fast" Laughing and wheezing, we both arrive at the tree. Well, ok, he let me get there a second or two before him. As we head across the lawn and towards the break in the wall that leads to the Park, I find myself smiling at the colorful New York sky. Why didn't I spend more time doing this? Usually my dad worked late nights and long days I barely remember him being home at all. The next day I asked my Father again to go to the park but he refused he said he had business and he told me to do my homework. I cried and wailed like a typical seven year old that it wasn't fair, but he didn't change his mind. He never did. That was the last time I saw my dad. My Uncles told me he was killed protecting his Family. I thought I was his only family. I guess I didn't understand at the time. You see after my dad died. I was left to live at my Uncles place. They were always talking about my dad and how he would be proud of me. They claimed to run some sort of a factory but they spent most of there time talking about money and building new businesses. My Dad never wanted this life for me but, I know he would be proud. You see I think I finally learned what Him and my Uncles were trying to teach me. No matter what you look out for your family and you never forget the ones that looked out for you. |

What a thoroughly enjoyable little read, Nicely done sir. Makes me feel a tad guilty though, I dont let ickle Secondary win any races. |

What a true soldier in this land in which so few hold their lives protecting their 'family'. I hope that others follow your late father's example and die for the family, honorably. |

A heart-warming story. While I understand you may still be upset over the loss of your Father he did manage to teach you a crucial lesson in our way of life, or life in general. Great re-telling. Thanks for the share. |

I really do not understand why people don't seem to get this very simple--in my mind--part of our way of life. Family is what it's all about. Family is the end all of life. If there were no family, there would be no la cosa nostra. There would be no Mafia for us to latch our grubby hands on, and use to wipe off the blood, and feel good about ourselves. We would be nothing but a vast number of scoundrels roaming the streets, murdering, looting, and other despicable acts. With a family backing you, you have reason. Without a family behind you, you have anarchy. I for one choose reason. |
