Coffee Anyone? Started by: EveValon on Nov 21, '11 06:29

Time and again I have noticed people attempting to draw a line between the coffee shops and this thing of ours, but I propose that the line is not nearly as thick as some claim.

Without a doubt, respect is less of a requirement in the coffee shops.  Just yesterday, I called someone a jackass simply because he was annoying me.  That isn't the way I would address someone in any other setting.  I cannot really explain what came over me; perhaps the heady aroma of freshly ground beans mingled with the incessant string of fat jokes in the back ground effected me poorly. What I can tell you is that this isn't the only example of bad behavior on my end.  Earlier today with very little provocation, I shouted obscenities at someone I hardly know.

For many and honestly for me also, this feels separate from the normal goings on around MafiaReturns.  However, when I sit back, and have a look around the coffee district, I recognize connection after connection between the seemingly innocent coffee shop, and the seedier side of our business.

In the corner, a group of men and woman speak in hushed tones, weapons hidden beneath closed trench coats.  What could they be talking about?  Is there possibly an attack being planned on one of occupied cities? If I walk down the street I will notice a seemingly infinite series of shops named after mafia families.  Members of those families tend to hang out in their shop and shoot the breeze, relax, perhaps organize a crime or two.

Many people have a bit of coffee and then jump into the PM room, where they are able to whisper in complete secrecy about all maters personal, or business related.  At the end of the say, deals are made, loyalty is built, and business is strengthened.  Sometimes.

Sometimes people die because of whispers in the PM room.  Sometimes leaders fall because someone betrayed a group of armed men.  Sometimes paranoia is passed from person to person in these shops.  Information is passed so much more quickly than waiting for the post.  Some prefer to speak face to face when dealing with sensitive issues.  Some people like to conduct wresting role play.  Whatever our motivations we discuss and plan the most secretive and dangerous aspects of our world in these coffee shops, so how can we claim that this world is separate?

I have seen men and women, brand new to our world, head straight into DivineLunacy.  I have seen these young thieves and thugs laughed at and ridiculed at times, but I have also seen them pointed in the right direction toward success in our world.  We have a responsibility to lead by example, and show the least experienced members of our society the code of respect and decorum that we expect them to follow.  Should we not also be modeling this behavior and civility in the most public of coffee shops, DivineLunacy?

Nice to see you bringing your own debate to the streets instead of complaining of things being recycled. But before I go off tangent... I shall quickly move to the subject in hand.

Yes, the coffeeshops are an integral part of this world for some people, in times of war they are probably a necessity for the passing of information quickly. However, for me that is the only reason they should be tied to this world. I would much prefer there to be no coffeeshops at all as I believe we would see a massive influx of interaction between mobsters that have never even contacted each other before. I have come to this conclusion because of the recent activity we have seen in the streets. I have made some posts and even put one up myself and because of these I have spoken to people I would never have spoken to in the coffeeshops. I have made one or two new friends and probably one or two more enemies as well.

Personally, I only claim there is a thick line between the two because I WANT it to be that way and that is how I treat them...  two totally different realms. I very rarely talk of this world when in the coffeeshops unless its from a nostalgic point of view. Even in private I very rarely talk about this world, it's just general chit chat. I do realise that other people dont have the same views as me on this subject.

As for modelling respect and decorum in the coffeeshops, no... I don't agree with that sentiment. There are lines that are drawn out by the Gods when anyone enters the divinelunacy coffeeshop (the greet message) and as long as the they don't see a problem with what is being said then there shouldn't be a problem from us mere mortals in my opinion. We can talk and act any way we want, if we all mollycoddled each other in the coffeeshops they would quickly become dull and be full of everyone idling, which would in turn keep people away from there.

I wasnt lodging a complaint, I was stating a fact.  I certainly wasn't attempting to insinuate that your topic was recycled.  If I felt that way I probably wouldn't have commented on it.

I find it odd for you to say that you have built more relationships on these streets rather than in the shops.  For me it has always been the opposite.  I have always found city communication and loyalty difficult to build within the confines of MafiaReturns.  Often times situations do not arise which would cause for me to need to speak to even the members of other HQs of Chicago.  I feel this communication is esential to our stability, and so I take the initiative to have a drink in each of their shops daily.  We have the chance to talk as friends instead of associates.

My bloodline didn't develop a taste for coffee until they'd been in the business for at least a year; since then both myself and my forebears and myself have made many a friend in the coffeeshops. However, those I have known longest and remained close to are people I met through business, on the streets - long before either myself or previous members of my bloodline stepped into the cofeeshops.

Ultimately, there is never going to be a line. You are never going to be able to say 'Ok, this is business; this is personal', the evidence is all around you. Look at any crew room you care to visit. Not only will there be announcements made of people dying out on the streets, but you'll also find people's standing in the coffeeshop is directly related to their position in their family (OOC: OP/SOP etc). Similarly, every family my line has ever been in has either had a war room, hit room or some kind of upper structure room on IRC. It is simply impossible to have all this on one hand and then with the other claim that the coffeeshops and the streets are two independent entities. We're only humans, it is not easy to compartmentalise to that degree.

We have a responsibility to lead by example, and show the least experienced members of our society the code of respect and decorum that we expect them to follow

I'm sorrry but this I totally disagree with. Yeah, it may not be the best way to conduct business just to go around taking the piss out of people, but ultimately. I've earnt my button, they haven't. I didn't work my way up the ladder of the Mob to be an helpful, all-round good guy. If I wanted to teach, I'd have gone to college, got a degree and applied for a job in a school. I joined the mob because I want the money, the power. Sure, if a promising little diamond in the rough comes along I may well take him under my wing because that benefits me - I get a guy who looks up to me, shows some loyalty and kicks up some cash. No way does that mean I'll extend the service to every snot nosed cretin who comes along!

Well said. I think a lot of people have a completely different idea of what we're supposed to be doing here, recently I've heard too much of this "You can't say that, it might offend someone!" or "It's not his fault he's only new". As Sprozz has pointed out, who cares? We're not in the business of caring and sharing, we're here essentially because we are all power hounds, we are in it for the money, the thrill. I don't particularly wish to invest my precious time I spend on the streets informing every young gent or lady as to how they could successfully get away with knocking over a post office or efficiently running a prostitution ring. Figure it out for yourself, can't do that? Go die in the corner away from me.

That doesn't mean to say that if a young turk with a runny nose asks me a genuine question regarding directions to a decent coffee shop or which family member he should be informing about his gun training I'll spit in his face and tell him to lump it. On the contrary I'll do my best. But make no mistake, I'm not here to hold your hand. You make your own way in this world, it's upon you and you alone to prove that you can pull your socks up and survive.

And if there are any of you out there who have the strange compulsion to mother every budding criminal kingpin in sight, well I'd rest my money on the fact that you're not cut out for this thing of ours.

Time and again I have noticed people attempting to draw a line between the coffee shops and this thing of ours, but I propose that the line is not nearly as thick as some claim.

In my humble opinion, there is no line. For my ancestors have only been around these shores for a relatively short amount of time I couldn't possibly comment on how things used to be many many moons ago, but I'd hazard a guess that they were not that different from today. When you are discussing topics that are relevant to our world the two will always be linked, we may not wish this (And I certainly don't) but that's the way it is. I would by far prefer the two to be linked and have a fun and enjoyable set of coffeshops instead of the two being poles apart and have a bunch of dreary-grey establishments.

Well anyway, that's my take on things.

My original sentiments were more meaning that a leader should, in my opinion, lead by example.  Something you cant teach, but you can see the respect that those above you on the chain show to deserving members of our community, and if you are smart enough, you will emulate to a certain degree.  They see us holding to omerta, then they will hopefully also hold that tenant as valuable and there won't be a large group of idiots drawing attention to our business dealings.  As far as teaching someone this way of life, I think if you have agreed to provide protection for someone, associate or otherwise, then they better damn well be worth the time to offer a little guidance, otherwise why keep them around?  People who you don't think are worthy of your time are probably going to end up being a liability

Having a laugh with people you know and who know you I think is natural, having a laugh at the expense of someone who doesn't know anything other than the name of the boat they rode in on, that is really not good for business.  Immigration has slowed, it shouldn't be that unnecessary words turn away someone who COULD one day, have that spark of potential.

Report Post Tip

I'd agree with you there Eve, whilst I won't go out of my way to hold someone's hand; neither would I go out of my way to lay a figurative bag of flaming dog shit at their door. However, I believe attributing the immigration decrease solely, or even partially, to the 'unnecessary words' either in the coffeeshops or even on the streets is to oversimplify things hugely. First off, there is nothing conclusive to demonstrate that these harsh words turn people away so that's pure supposition. Secondly, I would raise the argument tht if people are so fickle that they turn their back on this life after what amounts to a little teasing, then they're people that I won't be missng. I don't want to continue on this track and drag your speech off topic though, so I'll address another of the points you brought up:

My original sentiments were more meaning that a leader should, in my opinion, lead by example

This is true anywhere, not just the coffeeshops, but it does seem recently we've seen a slip in standards. A leader letting their hair down and horsing around with their members and friends in a private arena is one thing; but recently I can recall personally witnessing one or two instances of certain people, not just leaders, acting in a way in the coffeeshops that has completely destroyed their credibility in my eyes.

Report Post Tip

As much as people don't like it, and want it to be different, there will always be a link between the coffeeshops and MafiaReturns.

The way we conduct ourselves in the coffeeshops directly shows people who we are as people and mafiosi. Whereas the coffeeshops have a much more laid back atmosphere and I am glad they are this way, things that are said there, will still get you into trouble here. I don't think that will ever change, and quite honestly, I don't think it ever should.

As I said, how we conduct ourselves there shows how we are as people, if you conduct yourself poorly there, how do you expect people who see you acting like this to respect you here? I'd just as much expect someone to be punished for saying the same thing in the coffeeshops, as they would be punished for saying out here in these very streets.

A lot of people will not agree with me, and you're entitled to your opinion, that's mine.

Report Post Tip

To my mind there is no line at all. what is said within divinelunancy is on thing, and since it's open to all, it's usually a social place.

But the coffee shops overall are a place where buisness is conducted, be it alerts to family comps, or private conversations. so yes, i think you must watch what you say. yes, we should lead by example and attempt to teaech younger members of our world how to act. but no, the rules of this world should not appyle with the same force.

and we should always lead by example, i don't care if you are a pink-assed civvy, or a godfather, a good example is worth serious money.

I think this statement sums up the discussion. In the streets you have to have earned your button, whilst in the coffeeshops, you don't have to have earned anything, to say what you please. The truth is, the coffeeshops are full of mafiosos using the monikers that their ancestors made famous and as such, many of them feel they are entitled to the same privileges as those that have actually earned their ranks here in these streets. Of course, this will never change, but if you're asking this humble guys opinion, it should.

The problem is, you have a lot of people that have built family reputations, rather than individual reputations here. Afterall, it's quite common to see people using their most famous relative's name in the coffeeshops. Why? Simply put...it's easier. It's easy to show up at your fathers (or mother) familiar coffeeshop. It's easy to chat with your fathers pals. It's easy for you to do business with those your father knew. On the other hand, it takes hard work to make a name for yourself here. It's not easy to just chat up your random stranger on the streets. It's difficult to do business with those that you haven't built a level of trust with yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not above it. Some of my past relatives have taken their former ancestors names again in order to gain an advantage. Even now, though my name is quite unique to my lineage, there's no way I would have gotten an invitation into the Godfather of Chicago's family without introducing myself to JesseJames as the son of so and so in the coffeeshops.

So, to put it simply, there will always be a separation between these streets and the coffeeshops. How you choose to act in these places...well, that's up to you. In the streets, you can easily wind up with a bullet in the back of the head, whereas there's no real repurcussions for our behavior in the coffeeshops. It's been like this for ages and will, undoubtedly, continue to be like this for ages to come. As the saying goes: "It is what it is".

Without digging, or even thinking too hard, I can remember four different instances where people were killed over something they said in the coffee shops.  I can think of several times where people were killed over rumors in the coffee shops.  I can think of at least five people right now who I wouldn't mind shooting given the opportunity, based solely on something that they have said in the coffee shops.  Surely we cant claim that their are no repercussions.  Considering further that many of us wear the same suits for generations in the coffee shops, the person you are on IRC avenue, is the person you are for most in MafiaReturns.

Report Post Tip

And that should never ever ever be the case. The coffee shops are private places where what happens should have no bearing on the real world. Call them a time out place.

They have taken over this place far too much anyway and if that is now the general consensus then it needs to be changed and quickly. What is said there is not said by you. It just isn't. It's a dream like place that has no bearing on what you say in these streets. Otherwise we might as well build houses over this very street and just use the coffee shops alone.

Report Post Tip

There are some rooms in the coffeshops that are like that, however the majority that are used are directly tied into this world be they family specific, communal city rooms, or the front of the shop itself #divinelunacy. There are some rooms which are for things that are nothing to do with this world and it's stated clearly above the door that they are such rooms. But when your in one that is tied to this world then one thing is paramount think before you speak, treat them as the streets, if you think what you say may get you killed or worse bring shame to your entire family then use the grey matter and don't say it. Too many think that because they go under a different alias in the coffeeshops so as to not arouse the attention of the feds it gives them carte blanche to say what they want, to who they want. But many of the grievences there begin here and are then taken there. So it's only natural that the reverse happens also.

Report Post Tip

I'm with Gene on this one...

I feel the coffee shops have way too much to do with This thing of Ours. This is not to say that I disagree with their uses completely. This is to say that we all deserve our downtime. Our time to relax and not be "on the job". That's what the coffee shops are to myself and many others. Yes, of course, there are times we are "on the clock" there as representatives of our families and cities, but this isn't ALL the time. If we are in a shop that has nothing to do with This Thing of Ours that people who frequent these Streets hang out in because it has nothing to do with the way things work here, or has no ties to a city or family, then it should stay that way and not be used in a way it involves the world as we know it.

We all bitch about people. We all bitch about how things are run. We all deserve a place that we can do so without our roles here being held accountable for those moments when we are not quite "ourselves". Most of us that frequent the coffee shops speak to people not from the same city or same family.. We have formed bonds this way. Many arguments start there and, much to my distaste, end up being brought here, to our Streets to be "dealt with" as are disputes here brought there.

The original idea behind the coffee shops was to increase communication between people and have it help our community grow as well as make day to day operations of the world and the families that inhabit it easier. In those respects it has worked. Without these coffee shops I don't think our community would be where it is today. We wouldn't know each other as well as we do and we wouldn't have had as much a say in how things have evolved from the first days of petties and felonies to what they are now.

Sadly though, people die for their words when they are not speaking as a representative of their family, crew, or city. It's always happened, it always will.. Unless of course there's a ban on this as well.

If you frequent the shops you should take things said there with a grain of salt for most of the time it isn't coffee fueling the conversation.. It's humanity, beer, wine, vodka, tea, milk, cookies, and who knows what else.

If a person's actions are going to be referred to as happening in "this" world then they actually should happen in "this" world and not another.

It's not to say that there won't be repurcussions, but a lot of that has to do with the harshness of your words in the coffeehouses, what family tree you come from and who you say it to. You say that there are at least five people right now that you wouldn't mind shooting based upon something they have said in the coffeeshops. To that I would say: "yet you haven't", respectfully. Truthfully, lots of people get away with a lot in the coffeeshops because they can. Now, if they were to say that in the streets, it's there for every leader, every crewmember to see...and it can't be taken back. Thus, it is rarely allowed here.

Now, I like to think of the streets as our place of business. It's just like one of those suckers that works in an office building for a living, they have to behave themselves in such environment or they get fired. It's the same for our way of life, though the "firing" can be a bit more literal. Now, the coffeeshops are more like a bar...a place you go after work. There, you can let loose with your associates, even your boss, and get away with acting like an idiot...because it doesn't affect business. That's not to say you can't go overboard, insult the boss and get away with it. But then again, if you insult someone with more power than you anywhere, you're asking for trouble.

As for saying that the person you are on IRC avenue is the same person you are in this world of ours, I'd respectfully disagree. Afterall, I am nothing like my grandfather and he was nothing like his. I have had ancestors that could easily be classified as scoundrals. Some of them worked for their own causes. If I were to represent myself using one of those family names in the coffeeshops, some might believe that I, Rathbone, have the same shady intentions that some of my ancestors did...which couldn't be further from the truth.

Being fairly new to these shores and unsure as to how she will be accepted on the soap box, Dallas looks around to see if any of the regular speakers are headed toward it. Seeing that no one is nearing it she steps up and clears her throat very quietly and begins.

Exactly how would you be able to simply "set aside" something of substance- or something offensive, that you heard in the coffee shop? Aren't the robots obsolete? I would think that whatever may be said (whether influenced by things sold legally or illegally there) would surely be brought outside of the coffee shop since we are all human and realisticly unable to seperate the two. Why would anyone say anything there and expect it not to have influence elsewhere in this world? In my first two weeks here, I have managed to stumble into several shops, and I did overhear things that made impressions on me as to the character of certain people. Whether they were good or bad is for me to hold to myself, but make no mistake, impressions are made there that do carry outside those walls. Seeing that this world is highly influenced by the way we carry ourselves or behave, I would think that there would be no place that we would expect eyes to look the other way so that we can misbehave for a few minutes. Being new to this area, I've went to those shops to have a cup of coffee and try and get some insight as to what I have gotten myself into here. I can testify to the fact that while in there I have learned more inside those shops than outside and that includes more about certain people's character. You can all discuss what should or shouldn't be a place to "let your hair down" but the reality of it is that people see what happens there and like it or not, it does have an influence in some way or another. -Most importantly, there are often new people coming in, listening, learning and forming opinions about you.

Dallas looks around, trying to think of some great closing statement, anything, anything... but it's just not there, so she steps down and quickly disappears into the crowd.

In a perfect world we'd all be able to say whatever we want without repercussion. For better or for worse this is not the case and often times there are consequences for our words, be it in the streets or in one of those dreadful shitty coffeeshops. I've been raised to accept the reality that our words hold weight in This Thing of Ours regardless of where they are spoken, and it's laughable for anyone to assume otherwise.

That being said, we are all free to do and say what we want, to whoever we want, wherever we want. What you can't do however is dictate what will or won't offend somebody else. To hide behind the notion that our coffeeshop aliases separate us from who we are shows a lack of accountability. By all means, go take a shit on somebody publically if that is your thing. But if said person decides they don't feel like serving as your toilet, you should probably be in a position to laugh that person off as irrelevant, or at the very least expect/be prepared for some sort of potential backlash.

It took me some time before I warmed up to coffeeshops. I tend to frequent them more often now for business reasons, as well as to have a drink with Friends of Ours and/or to break balls with my pals. I've never bought into the concept that the coffeeshops are seperate entities from our lives here in the streets and why should I assume that? The avenue I take to arrive at the coffeeshops stems from Our World. It's unlikely to assume that a mobster came across This Thing of Ours via the coffeeshops. We are introduced to the coffeeshops and speakeasies via the Mafia. It's too much of a gray area in my opinion to assume what I say there won't impact me in my day-to-day affairs as a mobster. I find it a better practice to either know my audience or at the very least have a grasp of what I can or can't get away with saying to somebody without jeopardizing myself. Picking and choosing when the two entities are not intertwined is treading some pretty murky waters. Furthermore, picking and choosing when they are separated when it is convenient for me is  nothing more than a cop-out and an excuse to abandon accountability.

The coffeeshops are indeed a very big part of our Life of Crime. Maybe too big of a part. It blurs the lines that separate our identities from our coffeeshop aliases. Conversations that could just as easily be held via mail are held in private rooms further blurring those lines. People that are not regulars in these coffeeshops are sometimes deemed unsuitable for upper-echelon  positions in our hierarchy as a result. There was a leader in Philadelphia that had coffeeshop attendance as part of his Made Man criteria for promotion. That's horrible. But it also is what it is so we are forced to adapt and accept it as part of Our World. I'm fine with that, but to then to suggest that it's some sort of safe haven is unrealistic. I believe there was once a pig that flew who said in these streets that he was against the coffeeshops when they were introduced, I'm assuming because of the way the worlds would bleed into and affect one another. The argument that they should or could be separate may a somewhat valid one, but to quote that same swine "that ship has sailed".

And that's not to say I think our coffeeshop aliases should be fully linked to our criminal personas.  I just view it in the opposite sense than what I see others perceive it as. Who we are in the coffeeshops is indeed not who we are when we are working in the streets. But rather than suggest that our words and actions in the coffeeshops shouldn't reflect on our lives in the Mafia, I'd suggest the opposite. Why should our actions and personas in the underworld carry over to the coffeeshops? As we all know, who we are outside this world is not who we are within it. Should the coffeeshops be all about business? Of course not. Would it be likely that a person could wrong me, war against me, betray me, or fight/argue with me in the streets only to see me in the coffeeshop an hour later to share a drink or a laugh with me? Absolutely. Certainly our personas outside La Costra Nostra are far different than the roles we play as criminals. At least that's how I differentiate between the fiction and reality of our worlds.

On the other hand, you piss me off bad enough in one of those coffeeshops, chances are I'm going to book a flight to your city and kill you.

Well, I always like a good debate about the coffee shops. What are they? A place to relax? A place to ignore the killing and criming of the day? A place to meet and plan? A place to seek help? A place to speak to family? A place to mess about with friends? A place to meet new people? A place to do business? And this is the issue with the coffee shops. They are everything. All in one. My family has seen leaders dancing naked in them. They have seen people plan takeouts. They have seen people asking for help and getting it. They have seen people asking for help, and being mocked. They have seen OCs be organised in them. They have seen people just sit and abuse each other. Banter some would call it. They are everything. Rolled up nicely in a cup of caffeine.

And this is the issue. For the uneducated. For the new. For the unsure. You do not always know what type of coffee shop you are walking into. And even if you do, you do not know the personalities. I have sat in a family run coffee shop where its all shits and giggles. Then I have sat in one where it is all business. I have walked into a public one i nthe morning call #DevineLunacy and seen people ask for help and get it. Then I return in the afternoon to the same place, but see a different clientel. People talking about the latest soccer game from Europe. And then mock anyone who asks for help or talk a little different. You always have to be aware of your surrounding. Myself? I follow a few loose rules when entering a family or public coffee shop:

  • Upon entering, get your coffee and evaluate the mood of the coffee. What can be shits and giggles one day, might be angry the next
  • Upon entering a coffee shop for the first time, do not say anything. Sit and drink your coffee in silence. work out who are the Alpha Dogs. Work out what type of room is it. Then only communicate after being there for a while
  • Be aware at all time. Treat everyone differently. What one person might accept as a laugh, another might be insulted. Be careful of speaking to new people. you do not know who they are

There are other things I do, but one thing is for sure, I am always polite and thoughtful to others, so as to not offend. Take care in the coffee shops. They could make you as a Mafioso, but they could also end you...
