| Changing Flight Times Due To Geography | Started by: Jean_Valjean on Jun 01, '08 02:04 |

Right, so I've been doing a bit of thinking and I came up with what I consider an intriguing idea. I'm sure I haven't thought everything out yet, so feel free to contribute. I have absolutely no idea how difficult this would be to implement, but I wanted to throw it out there. One thing that has also struck me as interesting in this world is that the city you're in really doesn't matter. You could essentially call them City A, City B, etc. and the only difference would continue to be the value of petties. Travel is really meaningless outside the crime value, other than differing drug prices. This does not seem realistic, as most families/crews in the 1930's would not be hopping around to different cities so much. I propose that cities actually become meaningful, in that their location becomes an actual factor in traveling to them. This would be accomplished by a longer "flight time". Since the jump from one city to the next would remain instantaneous, the "flight time" would be implemented in the time it would take to fly next. We currently have a 2 hour waiting period between flights. This would change so that the waiting time would reflect the actual geographic length of travel. For example, say you fly from New York to Philadelphia or vice versa, which are very close. There'd be the usual two hour waiting period before you could fly again. Same with Los Angeles and Las Vegas, which are close. Again with Chicago and New Orleans, which are farther away, but relatively close in the center of the country. Inter-East Coast, Inter-West Coast, and Inter-Central Travel would keep the 2 hour waiting period. But why should flying out of New York to Philadelphia be exactly the same as flying to Los Angeles? Flying from the East Coast to the West Coast, or vice versa, would take double the time- 4 hours. Flying between one of the coasts to the central cities would take 3 hours. A big part of the mafia was territory. This change would allow cities to be more independent, and would make location actually meaningful. It would also increase a family's loyalty and interest to their city as a location and not just a name. Are you leading a family in Vegas? Then what's going on LA is a hell of a lot more important to you than what's going on in Philly, just like it should be, since the bond between those cities will be much stronger. One thing that would suffer is the drug trade. One couldn't just hop all over the map every two hours looking out for the lowest/highest prices. Yet I've heard it repeated that the admins would like to see less money in the game. The potential for less drug runs certainly increases that. Players would have to weigh whether selling that coke for a good price was worth the layover for the extra travel. The difference would certainly not be crippling though, with the way the drug prices change as a person is in the city. Another criticism I've heard is that the same people manage to shoot every IA, and new players don't get a chance to shoot their gun. Potentially having players wait longer in each city means that there would be less flexibility in the travel schedule, opening up more IA's for others. That's pretty much all I've been able to come up. Sorry for the length. |

I guess one problem would be, make that two problems: It does not take two hours to fly from NYC to Philly....maybe you spend 20 min in the air. Even LA to Vegas is just over an hour if that. its hard to make this one more accurate, and I am sure most people are not going to want to wait more then two hours to go to our different cities. |

| Very good idea. Maybe lower Vegas to LA to around 1.5 Hours as it is very close but not making it too much of a difference | |

| You have to also remember, coding. Coding something of this could get extreme. But if they said "F*** it, why not?!?!!?" I'd like to see them add maybe weather or something. That'd be cool. | |

| I like this idea. makes hopping on planes a planned affair rather than going to the airport and choosing 'where do I go this 2 hour period'. | |

I've often toyed with this idea, but there are two factors to consider. Planes in this time period traveled slightly over 130 miles per hour at normal cruising speed. Cars traveled at about 25 miles per hour. So even a flight from Philly to NYC would still be... over 2 hours when you factor time to airport, flight, time to destination from airport. Also in this time period, most air travel was done during the day, so a flight from NY to LA would take place over several days and be a combination of train and plane :) We have to also figure out the impact of the profit made from drug sales if we increase/decrease flight times. Right now at 2 hour flights you can only get in X number of drug sales in during a given time period, however decreasing the time required between close cities would mean an increase in the number of transactions you can make - this would probably result in a much great amount of money being introduced into the game. You would think it would be offset by the longer flight times of other cities, however, I would think most people would stop frequenting other cities that have a long travel time unless they have a very specific reason to go there. I think most people would just bounce between chicago/detroit, philly/newyork, la/lv, and new orleans kind of just get stands out on its own. I think the end result would be that a very large portion of the game would just stay in NY/Philly a majority of the time due to the high crime prices, and the ability to fly faster than any other drug routes in the game. I'm not sure if this end result is what we are actually looking for. |

Good arguments, all. I still think the principle is a good one, though. Why not just make NY/PHI, CHI/NO/DET, LA/LV, etc. 2 hours each and just stretch everything else out? Makes cities mean more. Brings actual geography into the game. Also, potentially takes money out of the game as well. |

ForkRourke, the easy you can combat that is by raising prices higher. If you're projecting an x amount of percent that game money would increase, increase the commodity price for everything from headquarters, bodyguards, drugs, et cetera. Or, lower the profit players are making currently. Or you can implement both. |

| Yes, I've figured it up, and you can only get, at the most, 12 drug deals per day, if you fly and not buy and sell in the same city. | |

| I dont really like this idea majority of the people would only stay in the close cities which alot would not even be in their home cities where their family started in the first place. | |

I like the idea, it would make the game more realistic. |

Mr. McConnell, this has already been implemented, in a way, with the added flight times/cost for cross country flights. Also, I agree with MacLeod about Jean_Valjean. |

i hate having to wait the 2hrs,, make it maximum 2hrs from cities that are more then 2hrs away but lower the others, its annoying having to wait,, well that's my opinion anyway |

I am a little lost as to what the amount of time it takes to get to a place has to do with how long it will be until you next fly. It just puzzles me. No disrespect or anything of that nature, it just seems a little like it would make no significance. You would actually be HOPING for a longer flight time. In all reality, (since your motive is to make this a little more realistic) the only thing that the geographic nature would have to do with anything would be the game time or the game "clock if you will. Account for the time zones and all of that..Say if you leave the east coast at a certain time(closest being NO) then when you fly to the west coast it would not be the same time it was when you left. It would be that geographic place's time zone. That would be the only thing that the geographics should have anything to do with in my opinion. |

Because the longer it takes you to fly somewhere, the longer it is until your next flight. You are in the air longer. So rather than build a complicated system of in game clocks that are different for every player and would be shitty, you apply occams razor and just reflect the time difference for traveling on the only time value that really matters. Or something. |
