The township of Paradise was a dangerous place for a newcomer like Thomas, who had been orphaned as a child. The police were everywhere, and Thomas' small-time extortion racket was coming to a halt. He found protection with the bosses who ran Paradise and took to digging up the graves of the fallen Durden Gang and selling the valuables to a fence.

One night, on the evening of a full moon, when the light was brightest, Thomas found a document containing the location of a cash safe in the Business District of Las Vegas on one of the Durden Capos that had taken a bullet while having dinner with his faculty. Thomas bought a rusty safe and brought it to his home for practice. For hours, he studied the safe and all its workings and, ultimately, distinguished a sound that indicated the correct number in the combination. He went to the county records office to get the floor plans of the building that housed the safe. His information was thorough regarding the number of tile squares installed in the building—even the style installed in each room.

After preparing his raid gear, Thomas stole a truck and rammed it into the entrance of the Durden building. He entered the building with a riot shield through the hole the car created, cutting down his enemies with a machete. On the third floor, in the main office overlooking an empty parking lot, the safe sat undisturbed, locked, and bolted to the floor. Alone and without a firearm, Thomas jammed the door shut with an old office chair and barricaded it with an overturned couch. His bag was heavy, and he was tired. More Durden bodyguards tried to bash their way into the room, but Thomas had already breached the safe and escaped through the window by rope.

He employed his friend to melt the gold he had found into a single brick and sold it to a fence in the Business District of Las Vegas. The bosses of Paradise were happy with the events that took place; however, they requested that he perform a jailbreak for a friend of theirs. Without question or hesitation, Thomas accepted.

The prison rooftop was active with spotlights and correctional officers with shotguns. Thomas entered the prison in disguise as a maintenance worker, unaware that the Warden was doing inspections. Thomas was captured by the correctional officers and sentenced to jail time. He did not stay long in imprisonment. The bosses of Paradise heard about the failed jailbreak and convinced the judge to commute his sentence. There was no mention of this incident after that time, and Thomas found it in his heart to begin extorting local shop owners for protection. He devised ways to manipulate others into paying him by hiring two thugs to vandalize the shop owner's personal property. They all ended up paying, and Thomas soon had a network of collections that funneled money from twelve different stores.

Thomas was a good earner and knew his way around the hustle. He lived in a small apartment in the slums, where he made acquaintances with many entrepreneurs who conducted business with police and quickly learned the concepts of bribery.
