"Awwww mom! Why do I have to be a puppy?" young Dexter Sampson whined looking at himself in the mirror wearing his Halloween costume. "Because it's adorable like you sweetie!" Mrs Sampson in her dusty pink blouse and poodle skirt replies as she brings over the floppy ears and nose putting them on his face* "you are the cutest puppy ever!, now give me a little wag and woof." Dexter hangs his head and shakes his hips wiggling the tail. "woof! happy?" he asks annoyed. "Next year im going to be something cool like a robot or vampire" "ok cutie" his mom coos before the doorbell rings. She opens it to Alex,Dexter's friend in a Knights costume complete with sword and shield. Dexter glares at his mother "see mom? why couldn't I be a knight like him?" Mrs Sampson pinches Dexter's cheek "you aren't a fighter my little snookums" "let's go Fido and stay a bit away from me I don't want to lose candy from hanging around a puppy" Alex laughs before Dexter punches him in the arm. "Let's go metal boy" Dexter scoffs and they head out into the neighborhood to get candy. The night started off well lots of houses giving candy to many children. Dexter got many comments like "cute,adorable and "don't pee on my step" or sorry i got no dog treats to give you lol" They get to the close to the end of the toad when Dexter had an idea. "Alex I dare you to come to the Manor at the end of road i bet its haunted" Alex gulps "you know I was joking earlier. this..is dangerous it's been said old lady Nancy Hutchinson's ghost is still there." "Now who's chicken? bawk bawk" *Dexter mocks flapping arms bobbing his head* "im not a chicken puppy breath! let's go!" Alex storms off with Dexter running behind him. They arrive at the iron gates of the 3 story mansion. The grounds were uneven with sycamore trees, the Manor showing gargoyles on the edges of each side, old Gothic stained glass windows and two huge solid carved oak doors at the entrance. Dexter pushes open the iron gate with a creaking sound and they slowly approach the door. "wanna knock or just try to open it?" Alex says,with a quivering voice. Dexter places his hand on the doors when he feels something catch and the door unlocks. Dexter looks at Alex "you first" Alex shoves Dexter ahead and steps inside. The boys turn on their flashlights and look around. The hallway adorned with old paintings and portraits that appeared to be watching you and a long carpet runner in the middle. To the right was the living room with a couch and 3 wing back chairs covered in sheets along with old dark oak tables. They headed down the end of the hall stopping to a set of stairs with a crimson red carpeting leading to the sleeping quarters. Each step creaked and groaned as they slowly made their way to the next level "okay Dexter you proved you aren't a wimp..let's.. go" Dexter nudges him with his elbow "come on!" they get to one door pushing it open to a bedroom with a four poster bed an old desk and 2 one drawer night stands,one on each side. dust fills the room making Dexter sneeze. "shhhh!" Alex hissed looking around. The next 2 roons were exact in design with different beds.they came to the master bedroom. Dexter gulps and looks at Alex as he pushes open both doors. Before their very eyes lays a glowing shape resembling a figure of an elderly lady in a night gown. the shape suddely sits up showing her worn gray scraggly hair her face covered in wrinkles. she had one eye closed and one open. she opens her mouth to speak showing only 3 teeth 2 on bottom one on top. "what are you doing in my house? you have disturbed my sleep and now you will pay!" She rises out of the bed as the boys screamed and ran out spilling candy from their bags. "come back boys!' she says cackling. They run almost falling down the stairs when she appeared besides them "where you going, I've been lonely" Dexter and Alex stumble out the door "ill see you again". she yelled as the boys run screaming until they get to Dexter's house panting and shaking. "whats wrong boys? you look like you seen ..a ghost" she giggles "w-we did mom we did. Alex and Dexter were chattering and stamnering as they explained what happened. Mrs Sampson shakes her head in disappointment and sighs "number 1 that house has been empty for decades no one has never lived there in 40 years and 2, you were not allowed to go there and you committed a crime trespassing and breaking and entering. Dexter give me your candy and go to your room! Alex it's time to go home but not before i tell your mother what you have been up to." She picks up the phone to call them 2 days later "Mom! am I ever going to have any of my candy?" Dexter whines to his mom who took away his pillowcase of treats. Not for 5 more days until you learn not to disobey our rules!" Mrs Sampson replies from the kitchen The door opens to Dexter and Alex's fathers. "Honey the county gave us permission and we checked out the entire Manor. The gate and door were locked when we got there. We got inside and searched every room. no one has been in here since Mrs Hutchinson died in her room 40 years plus, there's no way you boys could have unlocked that door.. Dexter'smouth dropped "it..it was unlocked when we got there dad I swear! Mr Sampson shakes his head "how did the doors and gate get locked if you boys didn't do it?" he frowns "Mrs Sampson comes out of the kitchen with a plate of sandwiches "oh honey I almost forgot I hired a housekeeper for a few days a week since I'll be out of town. Her name is Nancy." Dexter heads into the kitchen to sit diwn when the door bell rings,Mr and Mrs Sampson answer and Dexter hears them talking to a elderly sounding lady. Mrs Sampson calls out "Dexter!Come meet the new housekeeper!" Dexter comes down and stops in his tracks to see the lady with a wrinkled face,only one eye open. Her smile portrayed one tooth at top and 2 on bottom and Grey scraggly hair under a bonnet. "Dexter! you're cute..like a puppy. You seem..familiar but we will know each other well very soon." she says with a smile and devilish look |
