In honor of the upcoming holiday, what are some of your favorite memories of past Halloweens? Could be from childhood when you cleaned up on candy, or a college party where maybe you cleaned up in a different way. Do you have a particularly memorable costume you wore? |

when I went trick or treating, it was like a game of chance. Try to get my candy, and try to keep it away from the bullies trying to get it from you. |

Well, since my story didn't belong elsewhere....
In 2006, I was in my last year of college. I was in a Monsters & Demons in Contemporary Literature course, and had done a presentation on vampires. I had done it so well that some of my more straight-laced classmates seemed to be concerned that I might actually be a vampire myself. (The super pale skin kind of helped.) Anyway, I decided it would be hilarious to dress as a vampire for the off-campus Halloween party, so I put my costume together; including a set of those fangs from Scarecrow that are supposed to mold to your teeth. Well, the day of the party, about an hour or so before, I decided I should stop playing MR and start getting ready because I was riding with several friends. Halfway through getting dressed, I grabbed the package of fangs and started looking at the directions on how to put them in. Of course, for best results- fit the molds 24 hours before use. Well fuck. 45 minutes was going to have to do. So I sat at my desk chatting on AIM (shut up, I'm old) and trying to mix up this putty stuff that goes in the fangs. I get it done, put it inside the fangs and stick them in over my canines. Probably sat there for five minutes with my lips curled up like an angry Doberman trying to let the stuff set some, but the things kept falling off. They wouldn't even stay for a few seconds. Time was ticking, so I went to Google. Lots of forums suggested Fixodent. Ok, well there was a little grocery store across the street, so I hauled ass over there half-dressed as a vampire and bought a tube of some off-brand stuff and got back. Fixodent and forget it? Nah. The denture shit stuck to my teeth, but not to the fangs. Cue 5 minutes of brushing waxy denture paste off my teeth. Frustrated, I grab my makeup and start doing that while I'm Googling more ideas and AIMing a friend of mine. In that conversation, my friend said "why don't you just use super glue?" Tip #1: Don't say shit like that to a blonde when they can't tell that you're kidding, ok? Because, that seemed like a good idea. So, into my box of random shit I went and found a half-used tube of Krazy Glue. Here's how that worked out: -I glued a fang to one tooth. Not even like a little lightly shut. I glued my lips tightly shut. Now too panicked to feel defeated, I go back to my computer and peck out with one hand to my friend, "What would you do if someone you knew accidently super glued their mouth shut?" Then my phone started ringing. It was AIM friend. I picked it up and said, or sobbed, "Mmm?" "OH MY GOD MARS YOU ACTUALLY GLUED YOUR MOUTH SHUT!" And then I hung up the phone and threw it under my bed. Back to Google. If you didn't know this, acetone nail polish remover is the solvent for super glue. I didn't have that, but my super girly-girl roommate did. So I went into her bathroom and found some cotton pads and the nail polish remover. I probably looked ridiculous trying to pour nail polish remover onto a stack of cotton pads on the edge of a thin college dorm sink one handed, but not as ridiculous as the idiot that superglued her finger to her mouth that was also superglued shut. Anyway, got the stuff on the cotton pads, then with my un-adhesived hand got to dabbing away at my face. Tip #2: Do not take a deep breath of acetone nail polish remover in an un-ventilated area. You will get dizzy. And when you get dizzy, you will get light headed and fall backwards and smack your stupid head off the toilet behind you. And then your friends will find you lying dazed on your roommates bathroom floor, dressed in a vampire costume that is now soaked in nail polish remover, with half your makeup done, a finger still glued to your face, and half your mouth glued shut. I swallowed one of the fangs. I'm not allowed to have super glue anymore. |

I remember when I was a kid, living in a small Iowa town, I would always have 3 or 4 different costumes. I would use each costume to hit each house. The first run was always the tester run to see who gave out what. The other two were trying to remember which houses gace what. However, regardless, I would have literally a big trash bag full of candy that lasted most of the year. Stale candies were the ones to watch out for come summer and fall. |

My brother and I collected two paper bags full of candy, one year. That same year an old lady was leaving chairs out because she was telling ghost stories. I believe I was five years old at the time. Halloween isn't like it used to be in the 90's. :( |

Halloween was not a very big deal when I was growing up so I am surprised by how very popular it has become. My own kids adore it and put it up there with Christmas as something to look forward to. In my house we all dressed up this year in the same costume as a family of skeletons. We did not go anywhere as I do not like to bother our neighbours but it was a very funny evening of skeleton shenanigans for our little ones. |

When I was many years younger we grew our own pumpkins in our garden. And this year the pumpkins ended up MASSIVE. I am talking larger than our 6/7 year old selves at the time. We gutted them, and we took shelter in them. Thats how large these were. And that was a great Halloween. |

| One of my favorite Halloween memories growing up was when we would build a scarecrow as a family and put it on the bench on our front porch. The scarecrow would sit there all month, and then on Halloween night, my dad would put on the scarecrow’s clothes and sit in its place with his arm draped around a big bowl of candy with a sign that said “Take one piece!” When trick-or-treaters grabbed more than one piece, he would move his hand to scare them! Sometimes he would scare the parents too! My Brother's and I would watch from the windows or sometimes hide up in in trees for a better view. | |

I was fourteen years old when I a few friends of mine and I spent the night at one friend's house. This in itself was a treat since dudes usually didn't have slumber parties. Anyhow, this was on Halloween night and we all had decent costumes and we all had a dozen eggs in order to cause havoc. Horrible, I know. I was fourteen, what do you expect? At least I didn't kill anyone. Anyhow, some older kids saw us throwing eggs at a house and started chasing us. All of us except one outran them. The one who didn't got all his eggs broken over his head. He looked pretty funny when he returned. Tragic, yet funny. |

My best Halloween memories are the days I’d just sit in the house without any bother. No one knocking on. No dickheads in the street. The old days. The good days. Before idiots took over. Bless them. |

Now I remember back when you actually went to people's houses and they could actually give you a real candy bar and by the time you got done you had so much candy that you still had some come thanksgiving time because you could not eat that much every day. |
