So, Fabio Capello has quit as the England manager, all because the FA undermined his authority by stripping John Terry of the captaincy. My personal view is the FA were right to step in and remove Terry as captain, pending investigation and criminal trial for his alleged racist remark directed at Anton Ferdinand. I understand innocent until proven guilty, but under the circumstances and with Euro 2012 fast approaching, was there any other choice? 

Who to replace Capello?

Harry Rednapp seems to be the peoples' choice and does not evade taxes. A few players have come out in the past few hours supporting his possible appointment. Harry Rednapp as done a great job at Spurs, they are the team people want to watch playing these days, but he has not finished what he started there. Spurs are chasing the title, and even 'Arry would not jump ship now.

Stuart Pearce has long been mentioned as a future England manager, he has had a good run as Under 21 manager and working as an assistant to Capello, and will lead Team Britain at the Oylympics, but seriously what has he done? 

Terry Venables, as nominated by Paul Gascoigne. Might aswell throw Graham "Turnip" Taylor in to the mix as well, if is not to busy filling the BBC sports pages with his unwanted crap.

Alan Pardew, has done a stellar job at Newcastle after a lot of people wrote him off and were not happy with his appointment, just not ready, if ever, for the England job.

Gareth Southgate, when hell freezes over. 

Alan Shearer, would command the respect of the dressing room, but did not exactly coat himself in glory at Newcaste (difficult circumstances I know)

The FA could go foreign again, much to the annoyance of everyone in England.

Hiddink has experience in Exgland, albeit short term, but he is a top class manager and is rumoured to be interested. Finishing second to Manchester United is perfectly ok. 

Another name mentioned was the Special One Jose Mourinho, well rumoured to want out of Madrid, well rumoured to want the Manchester United job, and unlikely to swap club football for international football just yet. I doubt the FA want someone with a fetich for eye-gouging opposing coaches.

Arsene Wenger, now would be a perfect time to escape out of the back door of a weakening Arsenal side. England have a lot of top quality youngsters coming through, and developing talent is something the French gnome excels at. 

Whoever the FA appoint, it is impertative they give youth a chance. As Gary Neville correctly pointed out, England need to start building for 2014 and onwards. We are blessed with young talent and the time has come to start bedding them in and saying farewell to the old guard.

Surely it has to be Rednapp?  

Unfortunately Roy Hodgson is also beig mentioned, my money's on Redknapp taking it come the end of the  season and Pearce running things till then

I'm a fan of Tottenham and being pretty indifferent to the national team I hope Redknapp will stay as our manager.

Why not just bring good ol' Tel Venables back for another go?

I have to agree with you there, FA have said Pearce will be in charge for England's next game, and Rednapp to lead England for the Euros. 

Who should captain the side? Gerard? 

Maybe Rio, after all wasn't he the one to be selected captain after Terry's clash with Wayne Bridge?

Rio's said he doesn't want it. I don't blame him either tbh, to Captain this current England side that's dogged by controversy, underperformance and a general lack of pride isn't exactly a great honour.

Plus Rio's fitness has been in doubt for a while now. If Gerrard is given it, he has to play in the centre and being given a proper chance to drive England on. 

Alan Smith suggested that it was time to drop both Terry and Ferdinand and replace them with Smalling and Jones. 

What I said elsewhere:

Talking seriously about his chances, if I were the FA, I would go all out for him, and not just give him the England managers job, but also give him full control of the entire structure, from the youth teams upwards. His vision and philosphy is now made for International management.

What will happen though is England will come to an agreement with Spurs. Pearce will be manager for the Holland friendly, where he will pick u23 players and it will be promoted as an 'Olympics Warmup.' Harry will then take over as caretaker manager for the 2 friendlies before the Euros, and the Euroes themselves, with Spurs being compensated handsomly. This will then leave options open for the end of the Euros

Harry out of his depth - no contract offered, drop him and spend a couple of months looking for a better manager

Would Harry want to put himself at risk like that? I think there is going to be huge amounts of pressure and high expectations of him. One thing that won't be in doubt is that the players will work hard for him. Would be good to see the England players bleeding for their country, rather than just going through the motions. 

i honestly see the job as a poison chalice for whoever takes it but harry was has been wanting the job for a while.  I honestly dont see him as up to the task even though between him and psycho stu is not much choice.  To me harry is a wheeler dealer who has often bought cheap and sold well, but at international level your stuck with what you got.  He has a great eye for up and coming talent and thats where him and pearce will work well in his favour.

Without a doubt it should be Gerrard to be captain. The man leads by example and can win matches single handed if needs be, he plays well off of Rooney and is also a force defensively

In my opinion we should drop all players over 30 from the squad, with the exception of Gerrard. Having younger players hasn't done anyone any harm.

We have so much young talent, to name some of the more obvious ones. New manager must give youth a chance and start building for the future

I just love this. England fans condemn John Terry for something he hasn't actually been found guilty of, but at the same time they want to give Arry the job despite the fact everyone knows he was guilty of tax evasion and was lucky to get off with it? Classic.

Though in an even funnier side to things, I actually can't stand JT. And I say that as a man who's favourite English football team is Chelsea. On top of that I actually really like Arry, he would probably do a great job with that England squad, maybe reach the usual quarter final stages as always.

Regardless of whoever is appointed it'll follow the "England Manager Trend";

Praised by all as outstanding manager
Press fall over themselves to say how he'll win the next tournament
Wins a couple of friendlies and is heralded as the best England manager ever
Scrapes by the group stages of the first tournament he reaches
Knocked out in the first knockout stages
Fans call for his head and say how awful the squad selection, tactics etc were
FA sack him

Its a very common scenario with England, Capello was the first in a while to buck the trend by doing all of above minus the sacking directly after the last competition.

As already mentioned, regardless of who is appointed as Capello's successor, they have to give the young players a chance, England has a lot of potential if we start doing a lot of things right and that starts with a long term strategy and give players who deserve a chance.
