At times, people might say that "Money is the root of all evil." That's not exactly true, because we need currency in the world to conduct business. Can you imagine paying for drugs for a handful of "magic beans"? Rather, the love of money is the root of all evil. When people love money, they tend to get greedy about it. When they get greedy, they become more susceptible to taking bigger risks and even become desperate, just so that they can have more money. So the accurate saying would be, "The love of money is the root of all evil". The same thing can be said when a person has power over others. "The love of power is the root of corruption." Power in itself is a necessary instrument needed to enforce the rules of Cosa Nostra. When people begin to value power over everything else, this is when most would say that said people are becoming or have become corrupted. I would like to share the following quote with you all; this was mentioned a while back in a previous discussion about power. "Power effects every single judgement that is made, every single action that is taken. The notion of power holds more weight than onore, sangue, famiglia and erta. It is to La Cosa Nostra as the Sun is to the Earth. It is everything. It is time people acknowledged this fact." In the old country,mafia was a way of being, an attitude that exemplified honor, pride, and social responsibility. These mafiosos were role models and served as protectors against the local authorities, who did nothing for their people. These people fought to have power, but they believed they had a responsibility to their people to preserve their way of life. Thus, when they obtained power, they used it to help them with their agenda. Do you see the difference of priorities here? The priority was not simply to have power, but it was to protect and preserve their lifestyle, because others had failed them. So if this was the root of Cosa Nostra, then why have we seen our goals strayed so far from this fairly simple concept? When you hold a position in Cosa Nostra, be it as a solider or a leader, the same responsibilities that fell upon our Cosa Nostra predecessors falls on you. It is not like some say, a "romantic notion." "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." We have seen what happens when leaders make decisions that protect individual families, but not the organization as a whole: our society grows stagnant, with current members growing discouraged, and new recruits are not compelled to join us. Their love of power has cost them their friendships, families, and ultimately their lives. We have allowed power to blind us, limiting our ability to see the bigger picture, and not just our particular family. True leaders are able to balance the responsibilities of their Family as well as Cosa Nostra as a whole. For the confused ones, think about those white-collared CEOs. When they make decisions, are their decisions based on what is good for a particular department, or what is good for the company as a whole? Granted, if you have power, you make the rules. You can choose to take the easy way out by ignoring your responsibilities, and make decisions without considering the big picture. You and your friends can prosper, while the rest of your domain lies in tatters. Or you could take the opportunity to make an investment in this thing of ours, and potentially stumble upon something great. The power of choice is in your hands; use it wisely. |

Valiant smiles and listens to the Miss. Esposito, very carefully and nearly sheds a tear as she finishes her speech. Finally I find a speech that makes sense to me, just when I was down and ready to kick some bum in the face again, you made me happy when speaking today. Bravo ma'am. And I couldn't agree more with all that you said, and it also makes me miss the TVJA days. I wish more looked at the bigger picture and thought outside that little box they call an HQ or "friendship", be it now or before. Cosa Nostra is what it used to be all about, nowadays it turned into some kind of self-preservation business. Much respect to you, Miss. Esposito, and thank you for sharing this with the rest of the Mafiosi. |

Heather listens intently to Kira and smiles, nodding every now and again. She sighs a bit and smiles warmly up at her when she finishes Beautiful speech Kira, you took the words right out of my mouth. I pray every night that one day, our world can be like that again. That all leaders strive towards the same goal and not just personal gain. Very well said indeed. |
