The Refugee - Backstory Started by: Svetlana on Dec 26, '24 21:32

Ellis Island and especially the Statue of Liberty was a symbol of hope for some people while Svetlana’s ship was docking there. Her heart was pounding against her chest, a furious drumming to the noise of the children’s screams, the guards’ shouts, and the sound of people being turned away. She held to her to her only possessions, a small photograph of her family clutched in one hand and a leather bag in the other. Svetlana had escaped Ukraine, her country that was at the time affected by civil war. The roar of the guns, the wails of the victims, the smell of the blood, these plagued her sleep. She had learned that in America one can start a new life, a new beginning, and women could find freedom from war.

Ellis Island was a chaos and Svetlana was petrified throughout the whole process. Medical examinations, grueling interrogations, the constant fear of being sent back. But Svetlana, strong-willed as only survival can make a woman, went on. Hallelujah, she was allowed to go through the physical examination and was considered fit for entry into the new world, which she could consider as a small achievement in the middle of so many challenges.

Svetlana emerged onto the docks of Manhattan to the mix of salt and diesel fumes with the city pulsing activities, around amazed her. Getting a job was not easy at all. She still had an ‘accent’, which was not very well received by people, and she had no papers to prove that she had completed school and this made it difficult for her to get a good job. She cleaned the floors of a sweat factory, the air was filled with the toxicity of chemicals. She hawked newspapers on the streets, her voice raw from calling out the headlines to the background noise of vehicular horns. She even worked as a fortune teller, ever which was a mix of intuition and the commonly used lines she had learned from an old book called “Gypsy’s Tome of Foretelling".

The city was a battle ground, a battle that one had to fight against poverty and racism. Isolation was her friend, a friend that was always there to keep her company in the vacant and reverberate room that she inhabited. And it was Svetlana, who had barely survived the war, and the terror of Ellis Island, who didn’t surrender.

One day, Svetlana overheard two men talking. The two seemed to be important persons talking about the current trends in Philadelphia and the possibility of getting a good job if one is a good baker. She got a spark in her. Thus, Philadelphia with the possibility of a new beginning seemed to call her. With the only money that she could save, Svetlana took a train to the south part of  the country, and left New York, and the past. It was very long and quite hard, but with each mile traveled she felt something new, hope. She thought that in Philadelphia she would be  able to leave the past and start a new life she had always dreamed of.

The scent of bread baking was rich in the air, mixing with the coldness of the Philadelphia morning in a way that was quite soothing. The store was lit up by the sun and the light scattered of the open window made the dust in the air twinkle. Svetlana had a floury face as she silently worked on the dough, manipulating it with the skill of her hands. They were cracked and calloused from many years of toiling, and yet she handled them with a certain kind of beauty, a testimony of the many loaves of bread that she has made.

This bakery was everything she had put in it. Every bread loaf, every pastry was a part of her and the struggles that she has gone through in the war and when starting a new life.

The door opened and made a bell ring as always telling everyone that a customer had arrived. A kid, who just entered the bakery, stared at the various items on the display counter. Svetlana was happy and had a smile spread on her face. “What can I get for you?” she said with a smile on her face.

At first the boy was a little shy and pointed at a croissant. Svetlana gently put it into a paper bag and for the first time today she felt a little bit happier.

During the course of the day the bakery became rather crowded. The smell of hot cinnamon rolls attracted a large number of customers. People came into the shop and engaged her in a conversation, laughing and making the small shop feel even cozier. Svetlana, in the middle of the hustle and bustle, had the feeling of being wanted, which was something she hadn't known in years.

She realized the bakery was more than just a place of business to her but it was a sanctuary, a haven from the anxieties of the world. It was here, surrounded by the comforting scent of baking bread and pastries, along with the warming human connection that Svetlana finally felt at peace.

The door of the bakery opened and two young men walked into the store. They leaned against the counter and seemed to be rather uncomfortable, shuffling from one foot to the other, as if they wanted to run away. Svetlana, who felt their discomfort, returned a friendly smile.

”Hello, boys,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady despite her heart beating rather fast in her chest. ”What can I interest you today?”

The taller of the men who was more imposing than the other spoke up, his voice deep and loud. ”Listen, we aren’t here for any bread, lady,” he snarled. ”We are here for your money.”

Svetlana smiled, but it was fake. She knew the glint in their eyes, the animal that hides the youthfulness of these boys. These boys, still quite naive and quite hungry, were dangerous.

"I... I don't have much,"  she said with her hands trembling. "I have only enough to survive."

The taller man scoffed. ”Come off it, lady! We know you have money stashed some where.”

He pointed to a very crude gun that looked quite real and shiny even in the light of the morning. I know the feeling of fear, the snake that twists around one’s heart; Svetlana felt it again. But then, she felt different inside. She thought of war, of all the things she had seen, of violence. She couldn’t be a victim again.

Svetlana jumped, acted on impulse and grabbed a rolling pin as a weapon. The taller man, being a rather violent fellow, was taken by surprise and fell back. The second man, the smaller of the two, turned as white as a sheet and mumbled and scurried back.

"Get out!" Svetlana shouted, her voice quite loud and confident. "I will not tell you again, get out of my bakery!"

The two young men, shocked by her bravery, scurried and ran away and went into the crowd as early as morning. Svetlana, with her heart still pounding, sank onto a stool, the nearness of the encounter still echoing in her veins. The incident left a scar but it also ignited a new fire within her. The warmth of her bakery and the sense of peace from being here felt shattered. She now realized she possessed strength she hand't known she had, and fierce determination to protect what was hers. She would not be intimidated, she would not be broken. She would stand her ground, even against the shadows that threatened to engulf her.

The attempted robbery at Svetlana’s bakery created a certain level of discomfort in the bakery. The customers however were quite understanding and didn’t like to loiter around; they looked at the entrance apishly. The store which was once full of joy and color had become rather serious and quiet as if the joy of the world had been taken out of it.

One day, while working late at night, a silhouette appeared right in front of her door. A man, he was tall and built like a man who has had to fight a thousand wars, had a tired look on his face. He had on a black suit that absorbed the little light there was and his eyes behind the sunglasses resembled a predator.

“Signora,” he started, his voice a deep bass tone, “I know that you had some problems recently.” Svetlana, being cautious, watched him carefully. “I... I am okay,” she said, “I just got a little scared.”

The man chuckled, more like the sound of a monster in the night. “These streets can be dangerous, Signora especially for a woman on let her the own,” he paused letting the implication hang heavy in the air. “I can provide you protection.”

Svetlana got cold all over. “Protection?” she said in a nervously loud voice. “From who?”

The man smiled and this was probably the most terrifying thing about it – a wolfish grin. “From anyone who will pose a threat to you and for a small price, of course,” The man explained.

Svetlana understood the unspoken threat even though it was a proposition. The man, a figure from the city's underworld was offering protection, likely from the very people who tried to rob her. It was a disturbing idea, a Faustian bargain that offered security at the cost of her soul.

Refusal, she knew could have dire consequences. Svetlana, caught between a rock and a hard place, found herself facing a difficult choice. Her once peaceful life, shattered by the attempted robbery, now teetered on the precipice of a dangerous alliance. The future, once filled with the promise of a quiet life now seemed shadowed in uncertainty.

Svetlana, however much she was tortured by fear, declined the proposal. “I understand your intentions,” she said, sounding more confident than she felt, “but I am not a little girl anymore and I can defend myself."

The man’s smile became strained. “As you wish Signora,” he said, “but remember I made you an offer.”

He turned and walked away and his footsteps became inaudible as they were lost in the darkness. Svetlana watched him disappear, a cold sweat on her skin. She realized that she had made a dangerous enemy, but the idea of selling her soul to the underworld was more terrifying than any threat.

However, this did not stop her enemies from trying again. A few weeks later, a couple of men appeared from the darkness, their faces hidden under masks. This time they were prepared. They burst into the bakery, with guns in their hand, and swiftly overpowered Svetlana.

The robbery was swift and brutal. They emptied the cash register, snatched the day's takings and even stole the valuable antique clock that had belonged to her grandmother. Svetlana, shaken and bruised, watched helplessly as they fled, the sound of their laughter echoing in the empty shop.

The incident shattered Svetlana's fragile sense of security. The bakery was her safe haven and now it seemed as if it was a war zone. Fear had never truly time left, and it returned with a vengeance. The city, once a place of hope and opportunity, now felt like a cage, a place where shadows lurked and danger lurked around every corner.

Svetlana, the baker who had once embraced the warmth of human connection, now found herself isolated, her trust shattered, her spirit bruised. She was alone, facing the harsh realities of a world where violence reigned supreme, and the only certainty was the ever-present threat of danger.

Svetlana who used to enjoy the company of others and find comfort in the warmth of the oven now had her trust broken, her heart broken, and her spirit broken. She was orphaned, and now she had to survive in a society where the worst has become the norm and the only constant is the risk of getting harmed.

The attempted robbery left Svetlana in a state of shock. Fear was never far away – it was always there, uninvited, and now it had settled in her bakery. But then she saw a beam of light in the darkness in the form of Bebe, an Italian red-head who owned a small grocery store on the opposite side of the street.

Bebe was a spitfire, literally and figuratively, with a sharp tongue and even sharper looks. She has been around for as long as anyone can remember and had an understanding of the criminal element of the community that was only outdone by the number of scarves she wore.

“Do not worry about those punks,” Bebe said with a devilish smile on her face, “They will not be a problem for you anymore.” And she meant it. The attacks stopped. But Svetlana soon realized why Bebe had decided to look after her. Bebe, as it turned out, had contacts. It’s important to note that they were big, bad and extremely illegal. She was an affiliate of the Famiglia Di Fantasmi, the local gang that controlled the area with an iron fist.

As Bebe said, she had ‘made sure’ that the would-be robbers got the message. The message was simple: Svetlana is off limits; if you want to mess with her, you have to deal with Bebe. And that’s where it becomes dangerous. At first Svetlana was uncomfortable with Bebe’s presence, but she grew to like her feisty nature. Bebe was clever, and had this way of making Svetlana feel safe that she hadn’t felt in a long time. But such protection came at a cost.

Svetlana, who had escaped war and created a new life of hard work and no complaints, was now part of the mafia. She became a piece in the game, her life at the mercy of a dangerous criminal organization. Everything which she had strived so hard to build up – a life of happiness in the simple things and being happy with what she had – was no longer the same.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

The attempted robberies left a huge impact on Svetlana and her life. She lived in a constant state of anxiety, which invaded her and was unwanted. But then Bebe, who was associated with the Famiglia Di Fantasmi, had offered her protection. But the protection that she was going to get from them was at a cost and that was a very risky one. Svetlana now was a part of the family’s business which meant that she was now involved in the criminal activities of the family.

The bakery which was once a place of comfort and sweetness was now a front for money laundering. Money, which was the outcome of crime like gambling, extortion and other black market activities, would also arrive at the bakery in sealed packaging. Svetlana, following Bebe’s instructions as she was to ‘invest’ the money in the bakery's inventory, inflating the cost of ingredients and equipment.

This was quite a clever plan as all they had to do was to transfer the money through what seemed to be a legal channel. The bakery as a legal entity and was a suitable means through which the movement of the illicit funds could be concealed. If the authorities ever decided to conduct their investigations they would not be able to find any incriminating evidence. Svetlana, an enterprising woman from another country, was a model citizen, and her accomplishments were a perfect example of the possibilities in this country.

But she felt guilty of her involvement or rather the involvement that she was forced into. Every time she touched the money, she felt as if her past coming from the war, the displacement, and the fight for her life was upon her. She wanted the good times, the time when the smell of the freshly baked bread brought happiness into her bakery and not the smell of crime.

The fear confined her and kept her silent. The specter of the Famiglia Di Fantasmi, their power absolute and their methods ruthless, loomed large. To defy them would invite disaster.

Thus, Svetlana performed her role of being a spectator to the criminal activities taking place in the city. The baker, the woman who opened up to the feelings and connections with other people, became a victim of the phenomenon of her own survival and lived in the world of the mafia.

The bakery, was once a place of comfort and happiness was now filled with a different kind of energy. Svetlana would covertly stuff money into the flour bags, the old antique clock, and even into the underside of the hollowed table in the back. The money which was the proceeds from illegal activities, flowed through her hands like a tainted river, washing away any innocence she had left.

There was a certain aura around Bebe, her eyes looked sharp and cold, and she would sometimes come to the bakery to drop off new orders or to pick up what she called ‘the merchandise’. Svetlana, watching her move about the neighborhood with this certain confidence, started to see the other side of the criminal world.

Despite the fact that Bebe was rather harsh she had some rules that she followed. She looked after her own, kept the neighborhood more or less calm and quiet, and, occasionally, helped the people who were in need of assistance. Thus, Svetlana could observe how Bebe, despite the fact that she engaged in criminal business, could gain respect and even a certain level of admiration in the community.

It was not long and not very noticeable, but Svetlana’s view of the criminal world started to change in some way. It was not just the world of violence, where people are exploited. It was a complex world of power, loyalty, and survival.

One day, Bebe presented Svetlana with a new proposition. The Famiglia Di Fantasmi could use one more courier, someone who could deliver small packages from one place to another. At first Svetlana was somewhat afraid, but then found herself drawn to the challenge.

The courier work was dangerous yet it made her feel useful, a feeling she had not experienced for a while after the attacks on the bakery. She got a sense of freedom that she had not experienced since the early days of her marriage, as she moved across the different parts of the city delivering packages to mysterious men in shady bars and abandoned buildings.

Svetlana, the baker who had once fled war and sought a life of peace and quiet, was slowly being drawn into the criminal underworld. The line between victim and accomplice was gradually being erased and she did not know where she stood any more.

The courier work initially thought to be a daunting proposition, became a routine for Svetlana. She was growing with confidence as she navigated the city's underbelly of crime, delivering packages to shadowy figures in hole in the wall bars, and abandoned warehouses. The thrill of the operation, the sense of danger, and the growing respect she earned from Bebe was a potential molotov cocktail.

One evening, Bebe had invited Svetlana over for dinner at her large apartment. Bebe offered Svetlana a proposition that would change her life forever... "You've proven yourself Svetlana," Bebe said, her eyes gleaming with admiration. "You're resourceful, discreet, and have a knack for this life."

She paused and her gaze intensified. "I want to make you an associate."

Svetlana felt a surprise joy. "An associate?" she repeated.

Bebe nodded. "I see something in you, Svetlana. Strength, resilience... you could be a valuable asset to the Famiglia."

She continued to outline the path ahead - learning to make money, and the intricacies of the family's operations. Ensuring Svetlana understood the delicate balance of power and loyalty. It was surely a dangerous path, a life lived on the edge, but it also offered a sense of power and ultimately a way to control her own destiny.

Svetlana torn between fear and growing a sense of exhilaration, considered the offer. The life of a baker, once her dream, now seemed mundane and something she was willing to leave in her past. The allure of the criminal underworld with its promises of power and respect, was a seductive song.

She knew the risks and the dangers that lurked around each corner. Deep down a part of her craved the challenge and the opportunity to prove herself. She was no longer the frightened refugee that fled war. She was Svetlana, a woman who had faced adversity and emerged stronger, a woman who was ready to embrace the darkness and claim her place in this new dangerous world.

After a sleepless night, Svetlana decided to accept Bebe's proposition. The decision was not an easy one as it was a mixture of fear, ambition, a yearning for control. It gave her tremors even. She was stepping into the abyss, leaving behind the life she had carefully constructed of quiet resilience and simple pleasures.

Her training began immediately with Bebe. With Bebe being a demanding mentor, Svetlana learned the social hierarchy of the Famiglia, and mastered the use of a knife and a pistol. Bebe also taught her how to navigate the treacherous waters of loyalty and betrayal. She learned to read people, decipher the unspoken language of the underworld - a language of glances, gestures, and carefully chosen words.

Life became blurry with clandestine meetings, coded messages, and even dangerous assignments. Svetlana under Bebe's watchful eye, proved herself to be a quick study. She was meticulous in her work and her loyalty was unquestionable.

Then came the test.

The Famiglia had a problem. A rival family had encroached on their territory, disrupting their lucrative gambling operations. A daring heist was planned to the rival's heavily guarded casino and steal their prized possession, a rare and valuable diamond. Bebe, recognizing Svetlana's growing confidence and resourcefulness, chose her for the mission. "This," Bebe declared, "will be your baptism by fire."

With her heart pounding, Svetlana accepted the challenge. The heist would require meticulous planning, flawless execution, and an unwavering nerve. It would be a test of not only her skills, but also her loyalty to the Famiglia.

The night of the heist arrived. Dressed in a disguise, Svetlana along with two other associates of the Famiglia, infiltrated the casino. The tension was palpable, the air was thick with anticipation... Every rustle of fabric, every whisper conversed, sent shivers down her spine. The heist was a whirlwind of chaos. Alarms blared with guards shouting, and the casino erupted into pandemonium. Svetlana, with her heart pounding, navigated the chaos with a cold-blooded efficiency. She neutralized the guards, disarmed the security systems, and ultimately secured the diamond.

As they made their escape, adrenaline was rushing through her veins and Svetlana felt a sense of exhilaration she had never experienced before. She had faced danger, overcome obstacles, and succeeded. She had proven herself to Bebe, to the Famiglia, and to herself.

The heist marked a turning point for Svetlana. The baker who once fled war and sought a life of quiet peace, had now become a notorious associate of the Famiglia. While the path ahead was not certain, Svetlana, emboldened by her success, was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Report Post Tips: 1 / Total: $20,000 Tip

The heist had been a tremendous success. The rival family was surely reeling back after their reputation had been tarnished and their power weakened. Within the Famiglia, the heist was celebrated as a major triumph, a bold statement of their dominance.

One evening, Bebe brought Svetlana to a secluded villa overlooking the city. There, amidst the rich setting, sat LouisFratto, Don of the Famiglia. A man who could make the strongest of gazes.

Svetlana, despite her newly found confidence, felt a tremor of fear as she approached the Don. He regarded her with a deep gaze, his eyes assessing her.

"You performed admirably, Svetlana" he said in a low rumble. "The heist was a success, thanks in large part to your courage and resourcefulness."

He paused, "I'm impressed and you've proven yourself to be a valuable asset to my Famiglia."

Svetlana bowed her head, feeling a surge of pride mixed with apprehension. "Thank you Don Fratto.", she murmured.

LouisFratto smiled, a chilling display of predatory charm. "I believe its time to off you something more than just an associates role, Svetlana."

He extended his hand, a gesture both of welcome and a subtle display of power. "I'd like to open the books and make you a member of Famiglia Di Fantasmi."

Svetlana's breath caught in her throat... Full membership. It was an honor, a privilege, but also a terrifying responsibility. She was being inducted into the inner circle, granting her access to the highest levels of the organization.

Unfortunately, Bebe had moved over to the West coast and joined another outfit. Svetlana couldn't seek her guidance but she knew he'd only encourage her to accept membership. With a mixture of exhilaration, she accepted Don Fratto's hand. She had crossed the Rubicon. The baker who had once fled war and sought a life of peace and quiet was now a made woman, a member of one of the most powerful organizations in the city. The path ahead was fraught with danger but Svetlana emboldened by her success and guided by her unwavering loyalty, was ready to embrace her destiny.
