The clock that hung above Djosefin’s dresser read 12:23pm. Sitting at the edge of the bed, she tried to rub her eyes of any fatigue. Brushing her hair back with both hands, she let out a sigh. Just than, Djosefin jumped slightly as the pile of blankets on her bed moved slightly before becoming still. Almost forgetting the woman that lay in her bed, Djosefin quickly dressed and quietly snuck out of her bedroom. Walking into the kitchen, she grabbed a notepad and a pen and began to write a note for the woman. ‘Business meeting, had to leave. Had a great time. - Djosefin’ Leaving it on the counter she went into the living room and flopped onto the couch. Having little sleep was nothing new to Djosefin, but it always made it a hard time to get anything down.
After laying in silence, she lifted herself up and walked towards the door. On the way out the door, she picked up her leather jacket and her boots that were thrown in wild directions. Finally getting her boots on, she slipped on her sunglasses and vanished out the door and onto the streets of New York. Pulling out a crushed pack of cigarettes from inside her jacket, she opened it to find all smokes perfectly fine. Placing one between her lips, she put away the pack and flipped out her lighter. Lighting the smoke and inhaling it into her lungs, she made her way down to the coffee shop for her meeting.
Taking a seat at a table in the corner of the coffee shop where no one was close, she ashed out her smoke. Placing her hands on the warm mug, she could feel the aroma of the coffee slowly wake her senses. Taking a drink, she noticed a familiar black figure walk into the shop and make it’s way towards her. The man took the chair across from her and leaned in to speak.
“Well, well Djosefin. Nice to see you out so early in the day. Looks like you are still wearing the night on you…tell me…was she ‘good’?”
“Look, I came here for business. Here’s the money…I got it all.” Taking another drink as she leaned back in her chair to remove a wrinkled envelope from her pants pocket. Leaning back in she placed it on the table and slid it towards the man. “This should last you till next week mister.”
Snatching the money swiftly before anyone could see, he placed it inside his coat. He gave Djosefin a grin, got up and walked out of the shop. She let out a sigh. That man knew too much about her. He had to since he was ‘working’ with the city police. A crooked man that went by the name Eddie. Paying him to stay away from her ‘neighbourhood’ kept everything in check. She had her money coming in and so did he in return. Djosefin had been working with him for close to a month now. She didn’t like it at all, but it was the only way. He was a creepy man whom had a fascination with her private life. Most men that she knew did.
Djosefin finished her coffee and sat in the shop for a good 10 minutes. Pulling the pack from her jacket, she retrieved a smoke for herself. Just than, she saw a friend of hers make his way hastily into the shop and walked fast towards her. He sat across from her and leaned in.
“Your friend Eddie…”
“He is not my friend.”
“Fuck it. We got problems with him.”
“What do you mean problems?”
“There’s been word that the city police know he’s working for someone in the mafia…which is you. This Eddie hasn’t been keeping his mouth tightly sealed as he should be. You have to take care of him now before he slips up bad. Otherwise the boss will be after you instead...”
With that he was gone as fast as he appeared. Djosefin sat there still going over the conversation she just had. Remembering the smoke dangling between her lips, she lit the smoke.
“Fuck.”
Swinging the door open into her apartment, it was quiet. Walking to the bedroom, the bed was empty and the woman was nowhere to be found. Djosefin had a bad habit of just leaving them at her apartment alone. Not like there was anything important there. It was pretty empty for the fact she didn’t like material things to clutter her space. Finding her bottle of whiskey, she took a drink and coughed as the warmth hit her hard. Shaking it off, she walked into the bedroom and slid a dresser drawer out. Shuffling around clothes, she pulled out her pistol and tucked it into her jacket.
Parking her car across from Eddie’s watering hole at the edge of the city, Djosefin sat there with her hands on the wheel. His car was in the parking lot as usual. Taking a deep breath in, Djosefin let it out and brushed her hair back with both hands. Feeling the weight of the pistol tucked away inside her jacket, she felt a rush. Djosefin enjoyed taking care of ‘business’ when needed be. Looking at her watch sitting on the dashboard of the car, it was late afternoon. Djosefin knew that she had to solve Eddie before tomorrow morning without making it a scene. Not exactly having a plan was a problem here. Leaning forward and putting her head on the steering wheel she tried to think of a plan of action. Remove Eddie. Quietly. Quickly. Cleanly. |
