High Society trudged off the SS Galway. The ship was likely one of the few to make it here from The Rock and without incident. He'd heard speculation of other ships being sunk, some being detained offshore due to disease, and some still arriving chaulk full of diseases. With everyone clammering for a spot in the new country, he wasn't terribly shocked.
HS pushed past the parade of politicians and army recruiters, that clammered at the docks, waiting for the boat to empty. Wading through loved ones seeking family or friends, High Society pushed his way further from the shore and into town. High Society was promised a great many things upon his arrival. Money, a warm bed, a job. But he knew it wasnt that easy. Nothing in life was ever that easy. No, he would need to work hard at it.
His father came here before him ages ago and his last letter spoke of great opportunities here for those with an eager mind set to the task. HS wanted part of the take and knew that this was the place to make it all happen for him. He had a list of names his pop sent along. A few folks who knew the family and might be able to help. He started to seek out some of those folks, but always had a good mind to go with his gut and feel out the place first. He wanted to be sure things were on the up and up and that while he was good for business, the job, the warm bed and the money was good to.
Ladies and Gentlman, High Society shouted out to the crowd by The Docks.
My Father recommended this place quite highly. He spoke of many of you as family and many more of you as close friends.
I had not seen him in quite some time...High Society trailed on. I recently received his last letter a few weeks back. He told me of the great things happening here but he may need to move on. He wasn't sure how things would play out. He said he loved nothing more than the life offered him here and he said i would be a fool if i did not take the chance to see for myself.
That is why i come to you all today. I am hoping to find a warm bed, a job, and a place to call home. More importantly i am hoping to find a place who requires a man of my station. A place where hard work is acknowledged, growth is fostered, whiskey runs deep, and cigarettes are plentiful.
My Pop always told me that "Good things don't come to those who wait. They come to those who grab life by the horns and ride the shit out of it!" I assumed he meant you need to work hard, play hard, shut your mouth when told to do so and learn what you can in the time you have.
So Ladies and Gentleman, that is why i am here today. To do just that! If you have a place like that for me, then perhaps we should have a talk!

'High-Society, our family lines have been friends for a whike now. I think you should look up the New Orleans Crime Syndicate for a place to work.' |
