With my hands on my knees, I glared out at the men. There were five of them. One larger one in the middle, smoking a cigar with his arms folded. Two men on either side of him, with their guns aimed at Luciana and I. The fat one in the middle was laughing. He stepped forward, tossed his cigar on the cement, and ground it under his boot. He spoke in a nasally, almost wheezing voice. "Ahhhhh. The bitch and her new boyfriend. You two have caused me a lot of trouble. I'm going to enjoy killing you..." He kept talking. My eyes flashed to Luciana. I could see her trembling. Not long, now. When he was done talking, we were dead. Might as well interrupt the speech. With my right hand darting towards my gun inside my jacket, I leapt toward Luciana and knocked her over with my left shoulder. Dropping into a crouch and moving my gun towards the men I heard gunshots explode around me. My gun swept across from the left to the right, moving faster than it ever had before. It seemed like the world was moving so slowly. I hit the leftmost man in the chest with my first shot, my gun not stopping in its sweep, already pointing at the second man, who was spun down with my second shot. The fat man in the middle was still reaching for his gun, so my gun jumped towards the two on the right. I felt a bullet hit the meaty part of my left arm, and shrugged off the pain as best I could as I tried to focus. My third shot finally hit the next man on the right, and as I lined up the man furthest on the right I felt an explosion in my leg. Sagging a bit towards the ground, I snapped off my fourth shot and saw the man furthest on the right go down. I moved my gun back as quick as I could towards the middle, but even as it was moving I saw the fat man with his gun drawn. I felt it long before I heard it. The bullet slammed into the left side of my chest like a freight train. I gasped and tried to aim for one last shot, but the impact twisted and spun me, my final bullet heading harmlessly over the last mans head. I lay on my stomach with my left arm under me and my right stretched out helplessly towards Luciana. I looked at her, trying to say something, anything, but the world began to go black. I could feel my heart pumping blood out onto the concrete, and though I couldn't open my eyes to see her, I heard Luciana crawl over towards me and lower her head towards mine. I felt a light kiss on the corner of my lip, and heard her murmur that she loved me. That she was sorry. That she loved me. I tried to force my eyes open. I tried to push myself up. But I was starting to drift. I heard footsteps approach, and Johnny's voice begin to shout obscenities at Luciana. I could feel her hands try to hold on to my limp body as she was dragged away screaming. I heard a car pull up. I heard more shouting, and Luciana yelling. I gathered every ounce of strength in my body and tried to raise myself up on my right arm. But my hand slipped in my own blood, and I crashed back to the concrete. Then a gunshot, and I felt a body hit the ground next to me. I listened desperately for the sound of Luciana, but all I heard was the nasally voice of Johnny Friendly as he called out to someone else. "My Don, thank goodness you're here. These troublemakers nearly took down my entire- What's this, Don? WAIT! WHY-". He was cut off by a torrent of gunshots, and I heard a deep, powerful voice. "You all just saw Johnny Friendly murder an unarmed woman. This is not the work of an honorable man. This is the work of a monster. Let it be known that I will not be associated with anyone who would do such things. Find this woman's next of kin and give them enough money to provide a beautiful funeral service. This man, who died protecting her. Ensure that he will be buried next to her." As I drifted off into unconsciousness, I heard someone shout "He's still breathing!" and felt myself being lifted up into a car, and it was the last thing I heard for a very long time. I often wonder about that day. What would have happened if I never followed her. If she hadn't laughed at my poem, but just left me there and gone her own way. But mostly I think about that alley. Left or right. Where would we have wound up, if I'd taken her left instead? What could have been.? Would I have seen her smile through a wedding veil? Listened to her laugh on the beach as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear? Laying with her in the paramount quiet of the night, listening to our hearts beat in time... Luciana. I'm so sorry... The End |

I have to admit, I was surpised by the ending. I was so sure that woman was ruthless. Excellent story. I really enjoyed it. |

Not bad at all. Unfortunately you broke the 2 paragraph attention span rule so it won't be as appreciated as it should be. Nice work Keats. |
