It was evening time, on a cold midweek day in East Philly. The cloudless sky was occupied only by the low blaze of the sun, casting shadows across the busy freight yard of the warehouses lining the Delaware on one side, and the roofs of the houses and businesses that lined the streets looking west. Soul Hooligan was basking in the warmth of the heat the dying sun was showering him with, making the most of its final moments, in some futile attempt to keep warm with a winter chill sweeping the open space in amongst the dirty factories. He took the time to reflect on recent events as he puffed on his cigar. Times were changing, not only in Philly but across the country. He read the news, he kept his ear to the ground, he kept up with current affairs. Turmoil across the country, businesses burning to the ground, bodies everywhere. People he had met and created business networks with - many of them dead. Old newspaper clippings, lost to the wind, were swirling at his feet, and he instantly noticed headlines about another mob shooting... the faces and mugshots of some of these men and women he was still thinking about staring back up from the ground.. Surreal.. he thought to himself. The quiet of the wind was suddenly broken by footsteps from behind him. Godfather Cadhla and JohnnyTheMan were approaching from an alleyway in between the loading docks of adjacent factories, one for making hats that he had some stake in and some small office space, and one derelict; recently out of business having been owned by an associate from out of town who was reported missing. He had met with Cadhla earlier that day and was given the authority to set up his own crew. He had been Consigliere to many of the bosses from Philly in his time. He earned his stripes and his button through Furio when he was the Don of Philly some time ago, following his death he was taken in by associates in New York briefly, and was reunited with Cadhla when she took the lead in the City of Brotherly Love. He had gotten to know Badwolf, LouisFratto, Walter and Johnny and was put in to serve as hand to the latter and the city began to rebuild. Much of that rebuild had slowed with the recent death of Walter, and he like many others knew there was a vacancy to run the operations in Bella Vista under the Godmother. His father was from LA and was a hand to a crew out West, and he knew his grandfathers were in a similar business, but none had ever took the reigns and led their own crew; that responsibility was about to be with him for the first time in his family history. He embraced Cadhla and Johnny in turn as they met in the centre of the dusty yard. One look, one small smile and a nod was all that was needed to confirm his theory. He knew why they wanted to meet here specifically. The message spoken during the exchange was straight to the point. It was Cadhla who spoke as Johnny stared, with his arms folded. 'Bella Vista. You know what to do'. She motioned towards the old factory. He nodded in acknowledgement and embraced them both in turn again. They returned in the same direction from which they came, eventually disappearing out of sight as he remained rooted to the spot. As he stared after them, determination and joy in equal measures pumping round his chest, his eyes fell on the hat factory, closed up for the night. Business is at the centre of this thing of ours, business needs to thrive he thought to himself. Knowing some close friends of his were already in the hat making trade, and with his unofficial base being on the bottom floor of this building, it was time to make that base permanent and expand. The Mad Hatters were now running things in Bella Vista. |
