It was just bait, Spike, in fact, wanted to die and his desperate grasp at staying alive by hiding and taking pros and the constant 'fear killings' that were taking place in this world every 30 to 60 days depending on activity levels was just him 'being silly' and both he or Riina did not care about living any longer which is why Mistletoe apologized so profusely for not doing even more fear based killings and then retired a few hours after his death.
