“Dominic, my son… “ Dominic's father's voice trailed off as the aging, and white haired bricklayer looked out over his estate. “I want you to go to Vegas.. “The desert there is lined in gold.. With hungry tourists looking to lose their weekly paychecks.” Dominic who had been sitting in his father's hand crafted Italian lounger stood up. He had listened to his father and crafted a response that would be even, and also honest. “Pop.. Vegas? You sure about this? You want me in that life? You used to tell me as a kid that an honest man's work should be his greatest pride next to his family.” The elder Clericuzio sighed. A sigh with the weight of both heaviness and reluctance. “Nico..” the nickname his father gave him as a baby. “ Sometimes in life, one must make the most of his life. By any means necessary, for the sands of time are always trickling.” “You can try to tip the hour glass over but it will do no good.” “I want you to go, make a good life.” —-‐—------------------------------------------------- It wasn't exactly the desert, the plane landed in Detroit, Bricktown. Stepping off the flight, he hailed a cab and made his way downtown. The sights, and sounds reminded him of the old country. Cart pushers with produce, rug makers. Diners, butchers you name it. He smiled to himself, reaching into his breast pocket on his shirt taking out a viceroy cigarette. Grabbing the match pack and striking a light. He inhaled pure tobacco. The streets were lined in gold. One just had to look hard enough. Dominic checked his reflection in a shop window. His tanned olive skin, midnight black hair slicked back and his athletic build that could rival an amateur boxer. He started down the street, whistling a tarantella to himself. Soon, the streets and all of the ‘land of opportunity' would know the Clericuzio name. Still the sands of time trickle. |
