Okay so we all know what this means, you've been too late to the party and the crime has already been committed. However this wording suggests that it may be accepted at a later time. For someone like myself who does multiple things online I miss more than my fair share of OC's.

Would it not be better to say something like.

"You've missed you're chance, maybe if you paid more attention you'd get more work"

Okay it's a cosmetic thing, but it's a pet peeve of mine and thought I'd share.

Thats a great idea,and I would like something than the same old words.

I think the actual wording is;

"There was a problem with the invite, it could not be accepted."

I'm not sure if this message appears only if you're too slow for the crime, so I couldn't comment on whether it's a good idea to change it or not.

if it appears at other times, perhaps a second message could be set up? i do agree that the way it's worded is a bit odd to me.

The wording cannot be accepted at this time suggest that it may be accepted at a later time, but anytime I've got it it's been because I've not been paying attention and missed out on it.

Which is why I believe it to be misleading.

As you rightly said Dante, its cosmetic. However I agree entirely that more appropriate wording would be better as we all know that it means we've missed out and it can't now be accepted.

On top of this, and I don't know if its possible, but maybe invites could simply disappear from your personals if the crime is completed already?

I know that it disappears if you accept another crime, so its not a big deal, plus there is the option to delete it - just thought i'd add in the comment whilst were on the subject.
