Fredo’s Café, Corktown The scent of fresh coffee once again filled the café, but this time, there was none of the usual morning calm. Fredo sat at his favorite table, his back resting against the wall. A cigarette smoldered in the ashtray as he stared out the window. In front of him, his third cup of coffee that morning. On the table, scribbled on a napkin, was a single name: Babs. The bell above the door jingled softly, a draft of cold air sweeping into the café from the street. Fredo looked up and offered a faint smile. Fredo: “Sit down, brother. We’ve got things to talk about.” Babs sat without a word, glancing around the empty café before signaling for an espresso with a flick of his hand. It didn’t take him long to sense that something was different. Fredo took a drag from his cigarette, exhaling slowly, then spoke with a half-grin. Fredo: “You know, this morning I thought it was over. Thought they were sending me on my last ride.” Babs: (chuckling) “And yet here you are. And your coffee’s not even burnt.” Fredo: (nodding) “Listen… Joe, Jimmy, and Giacomo were there. No jokes, no games. After a little tension, Don Joe handed me Corktown. Officially. I’m the new capo.” Silence fell. Babs’ eyes lit up for a second, but he said nothing. Just nodded slowly. Fredo: “I know it’s no small thing. And I’m not walking into this alone. If you say yes — you’re my right hand. Your table’s here, waiting. You’ll handle the guys, the turf, the logistics. Everything. But more than that… I need someone to help run this smart. No rookie moves.” Babs leaned back in his chair, eyes drifting toward the bar. After a moment, he looked back at Fredo. Babs: “Does Joe know?” Fredo: “He does. And he didn’t object. Said, ‘If you’ve got the balls to offer it to him, you’ve got the balls to lead with him.’” Babs: (smirking) “What if I say no?” Fredo: (shaking his head) “Then I keep making your coffee every morning. Nothing changes. But if you say yes… we change the game.” Another pause. Heavier now. Babs took a slow sip from his cup, then finally nodded. Babs: “Alright… but you know me. I don’t do things halfway. If I’m in, I’m in all the way.” Fredo stood and extended his hand. Fredo: “Then it’s settled.” Babs took the handshake. In that moment, it felt like time in Corktown stopped. Fredo sat back down and poured himself another cup. Fredo: “You know we’ll need to bring people with us, right? People we can trust. This isn’t a corner hustle anymore.” Babs: (nodding) “Already thinking about that. Yreas — sharp, calm, knows how to keep things quiet. Cedric — his loyalty can’t be bought, he’s already with us. Fulmineo… he moves like a war machine, not a businessman, but when you point him in the right direction — unstoppable. And Limits…” Fredo raised an eyebrow. Fredo: “Limits?” Babs: (resolute) “Don’t underestimate her. People treat her like decoration, but she already knows more about our operations than half the guys carrying guns. And more importantly — with her, you get your last line of defense. Not against bullets… but against betrayal.” Fredo smiled — not mockingly, but with genuine approval. Fredo: “Well said. Then… let’s gather them. Tonight.” Babs stubbed out his cigarette. Babs: “You’ll be proud of Corktown.” |
