Corktown, DT, 1936.
The bus from New York dropped him off before sunrise, no fanfare, no goodbyes. Just a duffel bag, a stiff breeze off the river, and a new city waking up under a gray Detroit sky.
They call him Nick the Brick. Some say it’s because he took a bat to the skull in Bensonhurst back in the day and didn’t even flinch. Others say it’s because when Nick leans on you, you either crumble or wish you had. Built like a tank, fists like cinderblocks, and a stare that could make a confession crawl out of your throat, Nick wasn’t the kind of guy you’d forget after a meeting.
Brooklyn got too hot, one punch too many, one kid too connected. A made guy’s nephew took a dirt nap that wasn’t supposed to happen, and Nick? Nick got the ticket west. Detroit. Corktown. The Motor City.
A mutual arrangement, they said. “Cool off, lay low, earn,” they said.
Nick never complained. He wasn’t the talkative type. He knew the score, keep your head down, earn your keep, make yourself useful. Maybe even find a little piece of something here, a corner to call his own.
So now, he’s here. Apartment above a boxing gym, couple of numbers to call, and the Parisi Crew keeping an eye on him. Not quite family, not quite freelance. Yet.
You might catch him on the corner with a smoke, watching traffic like it owes him money. Or at Tony’s Diner, nursing a black coffee and a steak like he’s expecting the plate to mouth off. Maybe you’ll hear about the new guy who doesn’t say much but says everything with the way he stands, like a safe no one’s cracked yet.
Nick the Brick’s in town. Not lookin’ for trouble, but not shy if it finds him. He’s here to work, to earn, and maybe to make Detroit a little more solid.
He doesn’t bend. He doesn’t break. He builds.
Brick by brick. |
