Dissecting A Whisper Started by: Zoyechka on Jun 30, '25 12:15

Ladies and Gents, hello! Perhaps this day will find you wandering the streets, oh yup, I see you ma'am. Let's not pretend you aren't listening to just a little crew less gangster hanging around these here parts.

Anywho, I am bring a whisper to the masses for those of us that may be crew less by choice I am sure you will understand why this is amusing. So let's get ready to do a little dissection. First though I will share with you the whisper in question.

Zoyechka pulls out the whisper left at her mother's shooting site. It reads as follows:

Importance of crews and finding one It should not be a shock to you that the Mafia is organized and puts a large importance into family. Having a family is the only way to stay safe, people are less likely to shoot you if someone else will avenge your death.

Listeners, I will give the author of this wonderful message the benefit of the doubt. Their intentions were likely good. Kudos to them for even being brave enough to attempt a whisper even if it does not reflect the way America here is actually run. So let's dissect it.

Firstly, had these shores been running properly and the leaders were doing as they should be, then yes it would be important to find a crew to join for protection. But not these days, why you ask? Well you are just as likely to be shot in the back by the very crews you may want to join currently standing. My line has seen it many times over the past few years here. The leaders prefer you dead rather than waiting to see if you are loyal, they will come up with stories and lies. Some will even try to pretend they are the Gods and slay people down their enemies. Really, any reason will do.

As far as avenging deaths, you need the ability to do so and while leaders shoot down every Tom, Dick and Harry at about 2 weeks that aren't in their circles, well does it really matter?

Now I bring this to your attention why? Well we have seen the way the world has gone, you can see it in the recent actions of these wonderful, crew leaders.  Perhaps the writer of this note is new to our shores, and hasn't had much kin journals to browse through. Perhaps they are a crew leader that is lying to themselves and others. Either way I hope to see this world become a little more than it is currently. Perhaps they will come back to this note, bring the world back from crazy town and then this will apply accurately.

Zoy shrugged her shoulders.

Then again this could be all there is and how disappointing is that? Would you lay down your life keeping your leader or their friends alive just to have them turn around and stab you in your back? You can get the same treatment while crew less and not having any feeling of obligations towards donating to your leader or working hard. Guess many crewed members and crew less members have a big thing in common, huh?

Time will tell.

The soft echo of footsteps across cobblestone breaks the still air. A voice. Calm, collected, maybe even a touch worn from the years rises from the shadows near a lamppost, where smoke curls from a half-lit cigar.

"Hmph. That was quite the sermon, Zoyechka. Stirred the pot just enough to keep it from boiling, didn’t ya?"

"I listened. I really did. This world? Yeah, it’s got cracks. The marble ain’t as polished as it used to be, and the thrones ain’t always earned with clean hands. We’ve all seen it. Felt it."

"But lemme ask you this. With all due respect, what kind of legacy are we building if we toss every crew leader in the gutter cause a few let the crown rot? What message do we send to the youngbloods comin’ up, still learning the ropes, if we say, Don’t trust nobody, and don’t try neither?"

"Leadership ain’t perfect. Hell, it ain’t even comfortable. It’s earned in blood, sweat, and nights you don’t sleep cause you’re  planning how to keep your people breathing tomorrow. Some leaders fail, yeah. But not all. And writing em all off as backstabbing tyrants? That’s a cold take. Real cold."

"You said folks should stay crewless rather than risk betrayal. I say, if you want change. If you see the cracks, you don’t walk away from the building. You climb the damn stairs, you earn your seat, and you fix it from the top."

"I ain’t here to start a war of words. I ain’t blind to the pain that’s out there either. But I do believe in honor. I believe in earning your name in this thing of ours. So why not take the long road instead of throwing stones from the curb?"

"What say you?"

He flicks the ash off his cigar, eyes calm but firm.

I almost believed you right up until your failed attempt on my life.

You are entitled to think your way is a good way. I prefer not to waste my time when I could be making a bit of a stash for a future kin that does find some reason to put that level of effort into a crew or leader. Perhaps a future reign, or some other exception.

I do wish you a wonderful evening though. Be careful I hear there are drunks out and about.

"Heh… almost had me smilin’ with that one."

A slow smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth as he leaned against the brick wall, one boot crossed over the other. Fingers drummed lightly on the side of a flask tucked in his coat.

"But if you think that was the end, nah. That was just the opening act."

He glanced down the dimly lit alley, eyes scanning the street like he already knew who was watching. The cigarette between his fingers burned low, untouched.

"You walk your path, I’ll walk mine…"

He pushed off the wall, adjusting his coat as he moved toward the corner, head low, steps patient.

"But don’t mistake distance for silence."

A car engine turned over nearby. He didn’t flinch. Just kept walking, slow and steady, like a man with time.

"This story ain’t over."

He paused at the curb, looking back only once before disappearing into the night.

Leadership isn’t earned with blood, sweat, and hard work. It’s handed down like a legacy token at a university. Oh your father or mother was a leader, you’re instantly a leader as soon as city hall allows it. Doesn’t matter if they’re inept, incompetent, or never leave their mansion. It’s set in stone. Sadly, the weight of that stone is dragging the underworld of ours to a murky, painful death.

But do carry on. I’m just a dice addict with no real future in front of me.

Katerina hears Zoyechka's analysis of the "whisper" regarding crew loyalty and safeguarding, a slow, grim nod to each point. She sits back, face creased in thought. Zoyechka's words slice very close to the bone, it being a reflection Katerina well knew, as she has seen many die through their age or through fear.

"Zoyechka, Katerina here. Just listened to your take on that 'whisper.' And honestly? You're not wrong. Not one bit."

"That old-school talk about 'family' and 'protection'… it's a nice story. Sounds good on paper, especially for the new blood. But out here, on these streets? It's a fairy tale for suckers, most of the time."

"You hit it right on the head. 'Less likely to shoot you if someone else will avenge your death'? Please. These days, you're just as likely to get a bullet in the back from the very 'family' you swore loyalty to. Leaders? They're not looking out for their crews. They're looking out for themselves, their own pockets, their own power. Loyalty's a one-way street, and it usually leads straight to their bank account."

"And 'avenging deaths'? That's a joke. Most of these so-called leaders are too busy cutting down anyone who looks like they might get too big, too fast, or too independent. They'll spin a story, cook up a lie, whatever it takes. It's about control, not care."

"It's a damn shame, really. What was supposed to be about strength in numbers, about a code, has turned into a private playground for a few. And you're right, it's disappointing. Would I lay down my life for someone who'd stab me in the back? Not anymore. Not for most of them."

"So yeah, 'crewless' might just be the safest way to be these days. At least you know where you stand, and you don't owe anyone a damn thing. It's a cold truth, but it's the truth. Time will tell if anything changes, but I'm not holding my breath. You spoke some real honesty there, Zoyechka. Katerina out."
