The Stetson family always had a special connection to doors. Ma Stetson was a door-painter down at the door factory. Pa Stetson walked out of one when he left forever. My little brother Shane_Stetson had the most special connection of all though. Ever since Shane was a young boy, he would rub himself up against doors, like a bear on bark. He would walk face-first into a door, press himself against it, and just start rubbing up and down. This would usually last 3-4 minutes before he would exhaust himself. Ma and I used to pretend to busy ourselves and look for things around the trailer so we wouldn't have to watch him. We couldn't explain it. Shane just loved doors. As Shane got older, we heard stories about the doors he'd buy, and how possessive and upset he would get at anyone who came near them. This proved to be a lot of trouble for Shane, because doors are one of - if not the - first things you need to touch or move through when going anywhere. Steve, on the other hand, saw doors only as tools, not 'friends'. He felt that Ma hadn't developed arthritis in both hands down at the door factory just for Shane to rub that paint off with his 'activities'. He was a serious door salesman and today he was opening up his brand new shop in Bricktown, Detroit. 'Stetson's Doors', read the sign. Open for business. |

Shane's big brother Steve_Stetson was always the enterprising one. While he wasn't blessed with the handsome Stetson chin, he always knew how to sell the smallest cows on the farm for top dollar. Steve always had the admiration of their parents and Shane was always jealous.
Shane remembered the oh-so-sexy door's that he used to encounter. Something about the fine wood, the mahogany oak...the way it felt on his fingers. Then going in... the door that is, amazing.
On the contrary, his big brother Steve saw the doors as things to use...cheap tricks to just get in and out, you know, just pay for it and do the deed. He didn't bother to form the connection. He was the type of guy that would use it to go in and out, then walk away and not look back.
Shane remembered that Steve had earned the nickname back home and was referred to as the, "pimp of doors". Despite disagreeing with his big brother's treatment of doors, he still supported his venture as the Stetson name was being represented. |

After a bit of a heated discussion with a neighbor which Godfather-Chairman won they found themself in need of a new door. Thinking the idea of there being a business in Detroit which would solve this issue by selling doors exclusively Godfather-Chairman felt hopeless. None the less they asked around and to their surprise a business did exist. Stetson's Doors they wrote down on a piece of paper along with an address. Still believing the likelihood of this being a mugging outweighed it being a real business Godfather-Chairman brought their handgun "just in case." Once again however they were surprised. Stetson's Doors did exist, it did have doors, and it did not have a group of thugs waiting to ambush them. "Alright, well I guess this is a real place. I need a door and they sell doors at least the sign would lead you to believe that." Godfather-Chairman walked in and began looking around. |

As Alpha's journey continued, the coffee beans smell changed to saw dust and lacquer. His eyes caught onto a painted sign swung on rusty hinges: "Stetson's Doors - Open for Business". As he walked inside, the air was full with varnish and the echo of something was there but Alpha couldn't catch it, just yet. Alpha looked around and walked towards the counter where a man in suspenders was polishing a brass knob with care. "You the one looking for custom work"? the man asked without looking up. His tone was all about business. "Something like that" Alpha replied. "Heard you built entrances that don't always lead where people expect." The man knew what Alpha was after and understood he was starting to build a legacy of his own and needed something that was concealed from the rest of the world. He smiled and said "People keep things behind doors. Secrets, shipments..corpses. You'll find one worth opening under 12th street". Alpha tipped him for his service and disappeared into the crowd. |
