Don Stetson sat in his office, nestled into an armchair and smoking a cigar. He recently picked up smoking, something he knew his father Dynamite enjoyed. As he smoked, he sat in deep thought about his dad and the journey Shane went through. It had been a while since Shane had begun his search for his father that led him to Los Angeles. Shane would have never guessed he himself would become so involved in the criminal enterprise that led him to where he is now. Once his cigar reduced down to a nub, he snuffed it and grabbed his glass of whiskey. He took a swig and leaned back a little more, dozing off and his last thought wondering where the hell his father ran to.
5 years earlier...
As Dynamite boarded the plane, carry-on in hand, he checked his ticket and grabbed his seat. He put his luggage into the overhead compartment and sat down, ample space in the first-class cabin he booked. He felt a hand gently tap his right shoulder. He looked and was greeted by a stunningly beautiful flight attendant.
"A whiskey on the rocks, Irish if you have it," he replied, the attendant nodding and heading toward the front refreshment station of the plane. Dynamite sat down, adjusting the seat recline and opening the window cover. Outside he could see bags being loaded and planes in the distance taxiing.
The woman approached and handed Dynamite his drink, Dynamite handing her a tip for her service. He sat back as more people began to get settled, the plane eventually backing up and taking off toward Hawaii.
Arriving to the tropical destination of Oahu, Dynamite disembarked from the plane, a wonderful breeze and abundant sunshine together as a welcome party. He closed his eyes for a few seconds to take in the fresh air, glad to have arrived after a long flight. He walked to the arrivals section of the airport and hailed a cab to his hotel.
He came on the trip because he wanted to enjoy a peaceful getaway, but he also wanted to pay his respects to those that lost their lives in the attack of Pearl Harbor. He remembered seeing President Roosevelt's speech and seeing all the destruction and it felt quite surreal being in the area. Once Dynamite got settled into the hotel, he made a plan to visit Pearl Harbor and would also explore more of Hawaii. He definitely needed this time away and did not have a set date to return back to the mainland. Don Mastrosimone was understanding and okay with his extended getaway, but Dynamite needed to find himself again, albeit missing his son and wife. |

Shane woke up from his nap and checked his watch, realizing his expected thirty minute nap turned into a two hour siesta. Sitting up and retightening his tie's Windsor knot, remained in his seat, trying to shake off the grogginess. Alysia, Shane's Right Hand Woman, knocked on Shane's closed office door and walked in. Shane looked up at her and noticed her facial expression. He knew Alysia well and that she seemed to be in awe about something.
"There's someone here to see you, Don Stetson," she said, still in a state of shock.
Shane brought up his right hand to motion over the mystery visitor.
Much to his delight, Shane's mother Maribel appeared, wearing a blue floral dress, one she had created herself. Shane got up, went around his desk and toward his mother, opening his arms for an embrace. He approached, face lit up, heading in for a kiss on the cheek.
"Ma," Shane said, a big smile on his face, "It's great to see you! Sorry I never reached back out but, wait, how did you find me over here?"
Maribel gently held Shane's face between her two hands.
"Oh it is so great to have you in front of me again," she replied. "I couldn't have found you without help from someone else." She stepped back and motioned someone to come inside. Dynamite, his father, approached and entered through the door with a big smile on his face. Dynamite was normally reserved with his emotions and always held a stoic face and to see him smiling was rare.
"Pa!" Shane said as his eyes lit up. Dynamite reached out as they gave a firm and warm embrace.
"I just got back from some much needed time away, and some of my past associates said that you were looking for me in LA," Dynamite said to Shane. "I'm sorry I didn't let you know where I was going." Dynamite looked around the office. "But I am glad to see you doing really well for yourself. There are many new faces around the business and I hear you've got your own family...Don! I just wanted to let you know that I am very proud of you, son."
Shane donned a big smile and nodded his head. He offered Dynamite a cigar in which he accepted and his mother a vodka on the rocks, her drink of choice.
"I know you two have a lot to catch up on, so I'm going to head outside and enjoy some fresh air," Maribel said, smiling and leaving with Alysia.
"Now I know you have many questions, but let me start my story from the beginning," Dynamite said.
Dynamite spoke all about his time working for the various Ligambi families, eventually finding a long-term home with LA Godfather Billy Mastrosimone. He spoke about the old regime and how much he hated the undermining that would occur, putting him and Mastrosimone to make decisions that were "strongly encouraged" or else things would happen to their family.
"Fuck," Dynamite said to Shane, "I had a few contacts that kept in touch and heard instantly about the news of the old regime's downfall. You best know I celebrated that significant day when I was in Hawaii on sabbatical. When I heard about the moves you were making, I was very proud. And the way things are run on each coast now? Enlightening and a breath of fresh air. Jesus, I couldn't take a shit without Spike or Ligambi asking to see."
"Say, pop..." Shane said to his father, "What do you say you stay here in Philly? I've got the Paramount that still needs to be run and illicit money from my family earnings that needs to be washed from the Feds. I could use your expertise and more time with you to learn."
"Count me in," Dynamite replied, going in for a handshake and hug with his son. |
