For all intents and purposes, Fiona Quinn was gone the moment they closed the lid on her mother's casket. The singular affair that kept her in Norfolk any longer than the tossing of dirt onto the woman's grave was the matter of her inheritance. It wasn't any eye-popping sum of money, but it was enough to put Fiona on a train and allow her to start over anywhere she chose. Anywhere she chose- not her mother, not her sense of duty or propriety- anywhere Fiona Quinn herself decided to go.

When the time finally came, Fiona left her family's now-empty home with nothing but a steamer trunk full of belongings and a lot of memories she had neatly folded and packed tightly away in the darkest corner of her mind that she could find. This gave Fiona the freedom to peruse the display of travel brochures at the Norfolk Train Station as a means of deciding where to explore her liberty. Appropriately, a brochure featuring the Liberty Bell caught her eye. Lifting the tri-folded piece of paper from the rack, Fiona  considered the "City of Brotherly Love" for not a full minute before walking to the window to purchase a one-way ticket. What Philadelphia or Pennsylvania held for her, Fiona couldn't know. What she imagined was simply a new start in a new city where no one knew her at all. Fiona envisioned a life unfettered by the trappings of the society into which her parents had forced her for so long; no longer under the microscopic scrutiny of the life of "the Mayor's daughter." As soon as her mother had died, so too had the life-long expectations of keeping up appearances for the people that were always watching. Without her father and mother keeping her tethered to the Norfolk society pages, Fiona couldn't fly away fast enough.

As the train left the station, she looked straight ahead, unflinching and without even a goodbye to the place and life that raised her.
