The Gutter Saints - The Lanes Reopen Started by: Jeffrey_Lebowski on Nov 20, '25 02:03

South Side Chicago - The Old Gutter Saints HQ

The shutter groaned as it rolled upward, dust drifting from the metal like the building had just woken from a long, uneasy sleep.
Inside, the old Gutter Saints headquarters looked exactly as it had been left, chairs stacked, lanes silent, the faint smell of stale whiskey clinging to the dark.

@Jeffery_Lebowski stepped inside with slow, familiar ease.
No fanfare.
No speeches.
Just a man walking through the dust of a life he’d once known too damn well.

Behind him, the rain whispered against the pavement.
Somewhere beyond the doorway, MsRain watched, silent, the truth beginning to settle in her chest like a weight she wasn’t ready to carry.

He flicked the light switch out of habit.
One bulb flickered to life; tired, weak, but still trying.

Jeff smirked.

“Huh. Place still remembers how to breathe.”

He walked toward the old counter, fingers brushing names etched into wood by knuckles, bottles, and nights almost forgotten.
His hand found the small brass plaque he’d once straightened a hundred times without thinking.

GUTTER SAINTS
Abide. Roll True.

The words had survived.
Barely.
But they’d survived.

Jeff let out a soft chuckle, the kind that said life had other plans, and he was finally catching up to ’em.

“Didn’t think I’d be back here this soon,” he murmured, almost to himself.
“But seems the lanes weren’t done with me.”

He set down an envelope on the counter, the edges stained from rain.

Inside were two notes.

One from Calito-Brigante, in his sharp handwriting:

“It’s time, brother.
I’m stepping down.
The Saints need to return, south side a steady hand.
Someone the city listens to.
Someone it remembers.
- Calito”

And another, scrawled in God Father Spicoli’s lazy surfer half-cursive:

“DUUUDE….
Bring it back, man.
The streets miss the Saints.
And I miss free bowling.
- Spicoli”

Jeff shook his head, smiling like the universe had played a joke only he got.

“Well, hell. Didn’t even get time to finish my pancakes.”

He reached behind the counter and pulled out an old key; the real one, not the brass curiosity he’d used on the shutter.
It fit the lock on the office door like it always had.

The bolt clicked open.

The place felt warmer suddenly.
Alive.
Like the walls recognized the weight of footsteps they hadn’t heard in too many nights.

Jeff stepped back into the open room and lit the neon sign on the far wall.

It buzzed for a moment, fighting the years…
then glowed steady.

GUTTER SAINTS
— REOPENING —

He poured himself a quiet drink, lifted the glass toward the empty room, and spoke softly, not announcing, not boasting… just acknowledging.

“Alright then.
Calito passed the reins.
Spicoli lit the spark.
Guess it’s my turn to keep the lane straight.”

He took a long, slow sip.

“Name’s @Jeffery_Lebowski.
But some folks used to call me somethin’ else.”

He set the glass on the counter, adjusted the plaque with that same gentle habit, and let a tired smile slip across his face.

“Gutter Saints ain’t dead. Just took a breather.”

He turned toward the open door, the rain framing him in silver.

“Time to roll.  Abide in the gutter… rise as a saint.”

Behind him, the neon sign hummed.  Above him, the city breathed.
And in the shadows by the doorway, MsRain whispered with a smirk:

“Welcome back… whoever you are.”
