Caveman hadn't made much noise when he arrived in Chicago. That wasn’t his style and it certainly hadn't been part of his mission to draw any attention to himself. What was his style, he wondered? Shaggy beard and club seemed a little too on the nose, but he had just figured he would eventually find something that suited him. He was still waiting so the generic suit and offset fedora would have to do for now. Anyway, this job had required stealth and when his boss had given the order for him to establish himself there ahead of some heavy lifting that evening, he had got to work. He’d been around a long time. Detroit days under SimonTheSwanHunter, back when the old man still had a grip on things. Then through SlimRagnarok, Interlude, Gneiss then the move west, following the family to Las Vegas, doing whatever needed doing to keep the wheels turning. Years of that. Quiet work. Reliable work. The sort of work that gets noticed even if nobody talks about it. Last night was going to be just another task, he thought. Another ghost to follow him round and try to bother him when he tried to get to sleep. He'd done the task even so and just like that he had played a part in Jeff Lebowski’s Chicago setup being removed. It was as he was packing his things expecting to make the trip back to The Strip that the phone call had come. DetroitSimon on the other end, who else? "Chicago’s open. You're going to go and represent us there." That was it, nothing dramatic, no ceremony or big speech, just an opportunity to be more than muscle. This was the chance to represent the family over the bones of old TomJoad and there was something almost poetic about that. Obviously he accepted. Had it really been a question? First order of business was finding a place to put down some roots. Probably some people to help him get a handle on things after that, knock a few heads together and stop any local punks from getting any ideas above their station to round out the week. That almost sounded like a plan. |
