Rain battered the cracked warehouse windows while the city beyond disappeared beneath sheets of neon soaked mist. The streets below were alive in the way they always were after midnight, engines growled through puddle covered roads, distant sirens echoed between tower blocks, and the occasional flicker of headlights swept through the darkness like ghosts passing through the storm. Inside the warehouse Matty stood near a large wooden table cluttered with blueprints, marked districts and handwritten notes scrawled across stained sheets of paper. The building itself was unfinished and rough around the edges but there was something fitting about that, nothing built to survive ever started perfect. The smell of smoke and fresh paint lingered heavily in the cold air as he stared out across the skyline through shattered glass windows, lost in thought. Years ago nobody would have expected him to end up here, most people had written him off long before he ever had the chance to prove them wrong. The city had a habit of swallowing people whole, especially the ones who aimed too high too quickly. But every setback had hardened him. Every mistake had taught him something. Every long night spent fighting to stay afloat had led him here. The sound of footsteps echoed across the concrete floor behind him before the warehouse door slowly creaked shut again. Minaxi stepped further inside, brushing rainwater from the sleeve of her coat as her eyes moved carefully around the room. There was no hesitation in her expression, only the calm confidence of somebody who understood exactly what kind of place this would become. “Looks like you finally found somewhere worthy of all those plans” she said quietly. Matty allowed himself a faint smile as he leaned back against the edge of the desk “It is not much yet.” Her gaze shifted toward the scattered maps and notes spread across the table, every inch of the room carried the feeling of something unfinished but dangerous, like a machine waiting to be switched on. Earlier that evening she had given him the opportunity most people spent their entire lives chasing. There had been no dramatic speeches or empty promises, only honesty. “You earned this chance” she had told him earlier that night, “Do not waste it trying to impress people. Build something real, something that lasts.” Those words had stayed with him ever since. Now, standing in the middle of that cold warehouse with the storm raging outside Matty could finally see the shape of what they were creating. This would not be another reckless street crew chasing attention and collapsing under greed and ego, it would be disciplined, organised and ruthless when necessary, a foundation instead of chaos. Minaxi picked up one of the papers from the table before looking back toward him “You already know what kind of people this city creates” she said “The question is whether you plan to control that chaos or become part of it.” Matty crushed the cigarette into an ashtray and stepped toward the window overlooking the city streets below. Thousands of strangers moved through the storm completely unaware that something new was beginning above them. “We are building order inside the chaos” he replied calmly “Something stronger than reputation, something people will remember.” For a moment the only sound between them was the rain hammering against the glass. Then Minaxi folded her arms slightly and asked the question that had been hanging in the air since she arrived “So what do you call something like that?” A small grin crossed Matty’s face as he looked out toward the skyline. “Axiom Syndicate” Even saying the name aloud made the room feel different. Cold, sharp, precise. Minaxi nodded slowly, a faint smirk appearing on her face as she looked around the warehouse one more time “It suits you” she said. Matty straightened his jacket and gathered the folders from the table before turning toward the exit. “Big thanks to Godmother Minaxi for the trust, guidance and opportunity to make this happen. None of this starts without you.” Outside, the city continued to drown beneath the storm. Inside, Axiom Syndicate had just begun. |
