The Shadowman arrives. Started by: The_Shadowman on May 24, '26 23:01

The door doesn’t creak. It parts.  Like a theatre curtain operated by a man who takes stage directions too literally.

Boots click against wet concrete. A long, impossibly black coat seems to absorb the sickly yellow spill of a single hanging bulb. The brim of a hat casts a shadow that refuses to obey the angle of the light, awkwardly sat as it battles with the spikes on top of his head.  He clears his throat with the gravity of a man announcing a verdict.

“I am The Shadowman.”

A pause and a slow deliberate exhale.

“I have crossed three state lines, bribed two port authorities with expired coupons and a very convincing accent, and survived a customs inspection by a man who claimed to be from the Department of Agricultural Weights. I am not here for your territory. I am not here for your numbers. I am not here to sit in a smoke-choked backroom and argue over percentage points while drinking coffee that tastes like burnt radiator fluid.”

He steps forward with a weight behind him, his shadow cast long.

“I am here to do what no family, no syndicate, no street-corner capo has ever managed to accomplish. I am going to plunge this city’s underworld into darkness.”

He sits with it, lets his hand before deadpanning.

“Which, for the record, mostly means cutting the streetlight contracts, renegotiating the longshoremen’s overtime, and making sure every bookie in the district finally stops accepting those ridiculous ‘family loyalty chits’ you’ve been printing since ’19. I’ve seen the ledgers. It’s embarrassing. You’re running an empire on IOUs and hope.”

He reaches into his coat and produces a leather-bound ledger. Slams it onto a rusted crate. It doesn’t even bounce.

“You run crews. You move product. You settle debts with lead, leather, and very carefully worded sit-downs. Respectable. Traditional. But the old ways are leaking. And I don’t mean the blood—I mean the plumbing in the social club basement. I’m building something new. Not a family. Not a syndicate. A shadow. And shadows don’t ask for permission. They don’t hold council. They don’t send flowers to funerals they caused. They just… appear. And when they do, you’ll notice the silence first. Then the missing shipments. Then the sudden, inexplicable drop in your protection yield. Because darkness isn’t a weapon. It’s a business model.”

He tips his hat. The bulb above him flickers. Once. Twice. Dies.

“If your crew operates with precision, loyalty, and a healthy disregard for municipal lighting codes… find me. Leave a black rose on the third step of the old courthouse. Or don’t. I’ll find you anyway. I have a guy who reads parking tickets for fun. I know where your drivers sleep. I know which of your runners still uses a flip phone. I know which of your accountants thinks ‘offshore’ means Florida."

His footsteps echo as he walks, his coat gliding, the same strain as the hat that sat awkwardly against the spikes on his body.

“I am The Shadowman. And by dawn, this city’s underworld will learn what it means to operate in the dark. Bring apples, bring poop, or I shall take it. You will look upon my fingers and tremble."
