| Forced Down a Rail Track | Started by: BorisTheBlade on Jul 30, '08 10:00 |

As the ferry pulls into the habour, Boris 'The Blade' Yurinov takes a deep breath. He sighs in content - clean air. Not like the city from whence he came, a society gone to ruin. As he makes his way off the boat, he nods his thanks to the ferry driver. 'Clean air, a fresh start...' he thinks 'Nothing better'. As he wanders down the street, he's aware that he looks out of place - his eyes darting around at the towering buildings and colourful signs too much - like a snap happy tourist. It's dangerous in this thing of ours to stand out, to look out of place. Rather than seize up though, he relaxes. The people here do look welcoming to newcomers - for now at least. A man grabs him by his arm. "You need to join a crew within 48 hours!" he exclaims. Boris 'The Blade' Yurinov is purplexed, once he gets over the initial shock of being randomly stopped in the street he replies... "Why? Surely there's a niche for making money as an outsider? Even a morally questionable mercenary?" "You can't kill anyone either! It's against the rules!" Again, Boris 'The Blade' Yurinov repeats his initial response... "Why? Surely if I have a good cause..." "Doesn't matter, don't ask!" "Surely I could..." "Nope! You have to conduct yourself this way because we say so, the people before us said so and the people before them said so..." The mysterious figure disappears. Boris 'The Blade' Yurinov is suddenly overswept by a sea of nausea as the mysterious figure's words play on his mind... He can just see himself being forced down a rail track... forced to live a life that countless others have lived before him, with no room for independent or original thought, little room for creativity besides that in speeches. Suddenly, this life seems like a foregone conclusion... nothing unexpected, nothing original, nothing new. He's even heard the speeches others are making before. He begins to wonder if perhaps, he's not the first to make this speech either. Damn, maybe it's already happening, the wheels might already be on the track, Boris may be on his way to becoming just another generic Mafioso pursuing little else but Street presence. He glances back towards the habour - maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all... |

hanging down at the ocean front enjoying his day he witnesses an ever so common scene. Once again, a stranger departs the ship which has brought him a long way from home and he is immediately grabbed by someone who doesn't fully understand what helping a stranger is all about. He decides not to be lazy this morn and perhaps lend his input to the stranger Surely where you come from there are people who are as just overzealous in their needs to help people. Sometimes that lends to accomplishing the exact opposite of what it is they desire. Please, being new to our country, take no offense. Most here are happy to see the ship come in and will help in any way we can if asked. You seem smart enough and well versed in the language here to realize this and manage to find your way. I wish you luck and please don't let first impressions dictate what you think of us Americans. Take your time and learn on your own. |

It's not the zeal with which the mysterious stranger attempted to help me, if anything that is only to be commended. It is more the message which he gave that troubled me. In this country, in this life, it is apparent to me that there is no free will. I may not chose how I wish to live because others dictate to me that I can't. Upon questioning why an action is disallowed, it would appear that very few people, or perhaps even none, actually know why this is the case, they know only that it is. In other countries, choice in how to live adds to the excitement of the life there. Ergo I'm making an assumption that the lack of choice will detract from the excitement of life on these shores... |

Total freedom of choice leads to anarchy. If that is what you wish, then you are correct, this is not the place for you. There are certain rules here it is true. You are free to live how you wish to live but there comes a time when you have to follow said rules or not live here. He may not understand why such rules are in place but he relays them to you for your own safety. |

| You say that total freedom of choice leads to anarchy, yet has it ever been tried? I have seen it tried in other countries and it's worked - why could it not work here? | |

This is the Mafia. Not anarchy. The rules that are in place are generally there to prevent wars. If you join a family and start shooting at other families, that's an act of war which could potentially get your crew leader killed. As is mugging people. As is gobbing off in the streets without showing due respect to those who have earned it... That's not what La Cosa Nostra is about. That's not what this life of ours is about. There's a lot to this life of crime, if you stick around you'll find there's layers upon layers, and plenty of freedom for individuality, but if you push too hard against those rules that have been developed over generations, if you insist on betraying our ancestry, then, well, that won't end well for you. |

People in this world have rules. Those rules prohibit a new face, such as yourself, to be shot any earlier than 48 hours, which gives you the time to find a Family. However, after that time, the rules provide no safety for you. It is not that we don't want you to live your life the way you want to, its just no one is there to protect you after that 48 hour mark, and you will more than likely, die. So, we encourage getting into families, so that you may live. Zish steps down after his 2 cents, and walks back to the Bar |

.The mafia has ALWAYS had a head to run the family. If your trying to go it alone and doing crimes on there territory, then hey its a slap in there faces. Who are you to run around robbing there local 7/11's or to sell drugs on there territory. You are costing them money. They are nice enough to give you 48 hours of time to live before making a choice of a family. Your not forced to join a family but it is generally a smart thing to do as you will never make it alone. There are always choices.. Just some choices the outcome is not what you would prefer. |

Also I might add that rules are needed in this world of ours. Anarchy would never work. In this thing of ours rules are needed for many reasons. They are what make us organized, hence the words organized crime. If we had no rules, Id like you to imagine people running around shooting just anyone.Inter-family wars daily because such and such shot at said family. Would this be good for business? Not unless you have invested in the funeral homes and the local papers obituary section. Rules are what makes our world turn at a pace we can all follow. It is what gives us a closer step towards what is right and wrong. |

Adam hit the nail on the head. You have total freedom of choice. You can choose to do whatever you want to do. But you can't begrudge others their right to do what they want to do, either. Therefore, if you choose to do something that those who lead our families do not like, then they are free to choose to kill you. What you are suggesting is that you should be free to choose to do whatever you wish WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE. Isn't that a restriction on other's freedom of choice? If that is what you wish, then you are, in essence, making a rule. The rule is that you may not punish or retaliate against someone. Anyhow, this whole debate is stupid and pointless. Organized crime is our business, and without rules it is no longer organized crime. We may as well disband the families and run around like a bunch of street thugs. How smart would that be? The reason organized crime exists these days is because the street thug lifestyle is not very successful or profitable. With organization, we have managed to make money, stay alive, and stay out of prison. |
