Have you ever not listened to an artist or a particular album that you think you don't like, but, you later realize that you never gave this particular artist a chance because that's what you're supposed to dislike? I don't mean intentionally not listening to someone because of the influence of others, but, rather the subconscious following the pack that people sometimes do unwittingly. Since humans are driven to form connections with one another by evolution, I think we are all susceptible to agreeing with our peer groups without realizing it wasn't our actual opinion. It's only after you finally indulge in the forbidden fruit that you realize that not only is the fruit delicious, but, you fell victim to a kind of social conditioning and thought it was your idea. The moment that you realize that perhaps you were too quick to judge and really enjoy listening to them is liberating. For me, that particular artist is Taylor Swift. I don't know about anyone here, but, in my particular social groups she is regarded as the opposite of a good artist. One day though I fell asleep listening to music and woke up after YT Music auto played some Taylor Swift. I thought "wow, this is pretty good. Perhaps I was too hasty to judge." Then I went and listened to the rest of the album (Daylight, from 2019) and realized that I am now, in fact, a Taylor Swift fan. I haven't ventured far beyond that particular album (yet) but I have been enjoying what I've heard so far. I look forward to exploring the discography of Taylor Swift. A sentence I never thought I would ever type out. Now, my question for all of you is, has anyone else had a similar experience with a band or artist? Whether unwittingly or wittingly. |
