Queens, New York — 1933
The city never truly slept. Even in the dead of night, the elevated trains rattled overhead, jazz drifted from hidden speakeasies, and men with dangerous ambitions walked the streets beneath flickering lamps.
Giacomo "Gigi" Romano stood outside a small social club on Steinway Street. At twenty-three, he wasn't a made man, not yet. He was an associate—trusted enough to earn, not trusted enough to sit at the big table.
His dark overcoat hid a revolver tucked beneath his arm. In those days, survival often depended on being prepared.
The social club's door opened.
"Boss wants to see you."
Gigi nodded and stepped inside.
The room smelled of cigars and whiskey. Around a poker table sat several members of the Dutton family, one of the most powerful crime organizations in Queens.
At the head sat JohnDutton himself.
"Gigi," the boss said. "I've got a problem."
Gigi remained silent. Smart associates listened before they talked.
"A shipment disappeared at the docks."
The room grew quiet.
"Three trucks worth of liquor," Dutton continued. "Somebody stole it before our drivers arrived."
During Prohibition, liquor was worth its weight in gold.
"You want me to find it?" Gigi asked.
Dutton smiled.
"That's why you're here."

For three days, Gigi worked the streets.
He visited bars in Astoria, questioned dockworkers in Long Island City, and paid informants who knew which gangs were moving cargo through the harbor.
Finally, a name surfaced.
TylerDurden.
A small-time racketeer with big dreams.
Durden had recently begun spending money he shouldn't have possessed.
Gigi found him at a warehouse near the East River.
Rain hammered the roof as Gigi entered through a side door.
Durden looked surprised.
"You should've stayed home tonight," Durden said.
Six armed men emerged from the shadows.
Gigi smiled.
"Funny. I was about to tell you the same thing."
A tense standoff followed.
Nobody wanted a gunfight.
Gunfire attracted police.
And police attracted newspapers.
Gigi stepped forward.
"You took Dutton’s shipment."
Durden laughed.
"Maybe I did."
"The boss wants his property back."
"And if I say no?"
Gigi's expression never changed.
"Then tomorrow every bookmaker, bartender, and truck driver in Queens will know you stole from JohnDutton."
Durden’s confidence vanished.
Reputation mattered more than bullets.
Within an hour, the liquor was returned.

The following week, Gigi was summoned back to the social club.
Dutton poured two glasses of whiskey.
"You handled yourself well."
"Thank you, Boss."
Dutton slid an envelope across the table.
Inside was more money than Gigi had ever seen.
But the boss wasn't finished.
"There's another job."
Gigi knew there was always another job.
Dutton leaned forward.
"The city is changing. The old crews are fighting. New opportunities are appearing."
"What do you need?"
The boss smiled.
"I need someone I can trust."
For the first time, Gigi felt the room shift.
This wasn't about liquor.
This was about power.
Outside, the streets of Queens buzzed beneath the glow of neon signs and streetlamps. The city was entering a new era, and Gigi Romano was no longer just an errand runner.
He was becoming a player in a dangerous game where fortunes could be made overnight—and lost with a single mistake.
And in 1930s New York, every king knew one truth:
The higher you climbed, the harder it was to stay alive.
