The Curious Case of Flippy the Squirrel Started by: Matty on Jun 23, '26 15:44

This is an entirely questionable account from somewhere between Chicago, New York and a tree near Newark, circa 1938.

Inside a smoke-filled social club, Matty sat at the head of a scarred wooden table, nursing a whiskey and wondering how his crew had somehow spent the past three days discussing squirrel related crime.

The answer arrived moments later although the front door remained firmly shut. Instead, the window exploded inward with a crash.

BANG.

A small figure in a blue suit, red cape and a pair of tiny aviator goggles soared through the opening before landing squarely in a bowl of peanuts.

Silence settled over the room and Michael was the first to speak.

"Matty, why is the squirrel dressed like Superman?"

Matty rubbed his temples.

"Michael, I stopped asking questions three days ago."

Flippy climbed onto the edge of the table and struck a heroic pose, one paw aimed dramatically toward the ceiling.

"The city needs me!"

Before anyone could respond, CatChicken entered carrying what appeared to be a live chicken wearing a cat mask. No one questioned it after all this crew had standards, but they were surprisingly flexible. CatChicken pointed directly at Flippy.

"She owes me fourteen peanuts."

Flippy puffed out her chest.

"The city owes me justice!"

"You owe me fourteen peanuts!!!" argued CatChicken.

Meanwhile, across the room, Sydney was attempting to explain basic economics to Moose, who had somehow become trapped inside a coat rack although exactly how this had happened remained unclear.

"How'd ya get in there?" @BennyLombardi asked.

Moose stared at the floor.

"I don't wanna talk about it."

PrincessDonut sat nearby reading the evening newspaper. "According to the front page, a mysterious flying rodent had saved a woman's handbag from a mugger earlier today."

Flippy's chest swelled with pride.

"A hero's work is never done!"

PrincessDonut continued reading.

"It also says she stole six hotdogs afterwards."

Flippy didn't miss a beat.

"A HERO'S WORK IS NEVER DONE!!"

At another table, DungeonCrawlerCarl had spread a large map across the surface and covered it with red strings and handwritten notes, the crew gathered around.

"I've tracked Flippy's movements across the city" he announced.

"What'd ya find?" Ren asked.

DungeonCrawlerCarl pointed to the tangled network of markings.

"No pattern whatsoever. Yesterday she robbed a peanut cart, attended an opera, rescued a cat and somehow became deputy mayor for twenty minutes."

"Sounds about right" Veronica replied.

Near the bar BobTheAstronut was busy assembling what he insisted was a functional rocket.  This was particularly impressive considering it was 1938 and the entire machine appeared to be constructed from soup cans.

"I'm going to the moon" he declared proudly.

"Bob" Marti sighed "that ain't a rocket."

Bob pointed to the side of the contraption, painted in large letters were the words MOON MACHINE and apparently nobody could find a flaw in that logic. Just then TAGameish burst through the door.

"Emergency!!!!” he yelled

Every head in the room snapped toward him.

"What's wrong?" several voices asked at once.

"Flippy's on top of City Hall!" he blurted out

The entire room slowly turned toward Flippy, who was suspiciously still standing on the table.

"Then who's that?" Axxa asked.

Flippy narrowed her eyes.

"We have an imposter."

The room erupted into chaos. Cramos, Elle, Enjolras, Gaby and Stocking_Anarchy immediately began taking bets. DetroitRagnarok somehow acquired tickets and started selling them. FueryGoddess produced a megaphone from nowhere. Tyrion opened a notebook labelled: Is There More Than One Flippy? and started furiously scribbling.

Within minutes, crowds filled the streets surrounding City Hall. Police officers arrived. Reporters arrived, three of those promptly fainted then the Mayor suddenly resigned as a 'precaution'.

High above the crowd, the two caped squirrels faced one another atop the building. Michael cupped his hands around his mouth.

"Which one is the real Flippy?"

The first squirrel pointed dramatically.

"I AM FLIPPY!"

The second squirrel pointed back.

"NO, I AM FLIPPY!"

Then out of nowhere a third squirrel dropped from the sky and landed between them.

"I AM ALSO FLIPPY!"

Matty finally stood to speak and the crowd fell silent, he still had his glass so took a long drink of whiskey and sighed.

"I got gangsters arguing with squirrels."

Nobody spoke.

"I got a mayor who resigned because of squirrels."

The crowd waited.

"I got a fella stuck in a coat rack."

Moose raised a hand.

"I'm still stuck."

Matty nodded sympathetically then pointed toward the top City Hall.

"And somehow none of that is even the strangest thing happening right now"

For the first time, the three squirrels all looked genuinely offended and they huddled together for a brief discussion. Nobody could hear what was said but a moment later, they turned back toward the crowd.

One squirrel produced a notebook, another produced a fountain pen and the third adjusted her goggles. Then all three signed a single sheet of paper, nodded solemnly, and launched themselves off City Hall into the night.

Nobody knew what had just happened but the response was immediate. The crowd erupted into applause. The Mayor un-resigned. The stock market recovered. Moose remained trapped inside the coat rack. And somewhere high above the city skyline, three caped squirrels vanished into the night. The only thing they left behind was a small handwritten note which read

"THE PEANUTS WERE NEVER ABOUT THE MONEY."

Flippy jumps off the table and performed one of her famous triple backflips across the middle of the floor and landed precisely next to Matty. She looked up at Matty with a big bright smile. Slowly her focus shifted into the eyes of her family.

"Rispetto per tutti"

Flippy excuses herself and repeats her triple backflip but this time she lands behind the bar. She hands the bartender a fat envelope and she could be heard thanking him for the use of his projectors.

She climbs up on the bar.

"Cheers family!"

I am the one and only Flippy! All of you have just wittnessed another talent I possess. Well, I can only take credit for the idea because I have no clue how to operate a projector.

You guys really know how to motivate me as I just came up with another idea. What do you about us selling Super Flippy autographed goggles and vests?
