Yakuza Sun - Memoirs of a gangster's son Started by: BlackBurnt on Aug 05, '08 02:57
I'm Makio Oedo a.k.a. BlackBurnt. A name I pick up in high school when I was in Japan. My dad, Zanjetsu Oedo, was the leader (Oyabun) of a yakuza clan in Tokyo. I have a kindly mother, sister and a younger brother. My dad ran a medium size business selling drugs, doing prostitution ring and a lot of others illegal activities. I lived a comfortable and luxurious life. My home was as big as the White House in USA. But all that took a tumble when Japan's emperor started to have wars.

Many of the yakuza families were plundered and purge by the Japanese Secret Police. As a result, the numbers of yakuza families dwindle. It wasn't long before my dad faced the same problems; and has to take loans after loans, barely surviving on a day-to-day basis. It's easy for yakuza families to get so many loans but it comes with a price. With cumulative interest rates of 10% for every 7 days of late payment, no business would have survived. The final blow comes in an assault by Japan's biggest yakuza family; which is still operational as I speak; the Yamaguchi-gumi.

My dad went bankrupt. When we have cash that seems to fall from the money tree, everyone was our friend but now, so much for those friends. The only buddy I have left is my best friend which stood by me in this time. We manage to survive in a small house in a small neighborhood just a few miles outside Tokyo. But life was as hard as ever.

Yakuza families will never life a normal life. We are the rejects of society; mothers will starts gossiping about us, day in, day out. Gossiping about how we used to flash our money off, driving in Rolls Royce around town, where nice suits and stuff like that; but dads will keep a tight lip for fear of reprisal. Went everything falls, we are nothing more than rejects. Well, my family will have to face to this harsh reality.

One night, the Japanese Secret Police came to our house and took dad away. I tried to fight against the police but my efforts were useless. They shot me up with sleeping dart. As the drag him out the front door, I shouted to dad and promised to take care of mum, sister and my little brother. I never heard from him since. Rumors spreads that once a yakuza is taken to "justice", he is as good as dead. His last words the night before he was taken, he said "If anything were to happen to me, please take care of mum and your siblings". I am not ready to take that much responsibility. With mum alone taking care of the family, she was our new BOSS, Oyabun. Finally after years of hardship, we finally decided to sneak to USA to start a new life. Forget this life of the yakuza underworld.

Once we reached USA, a new hope is reborn amongst my family. Sister has been talking about opening her salon and my younger brother wants to go to college. But life isn't going to get better anyways.

Being from a distant land, we are an automatic social outcast. We moved from cities to cities. Unable to live the life we dream. As things goes on, we beginning to lose our new found hope. We come from a yakuza family, life will never be different. It's how it was supposed to be. Soon, I began a life of crime. Stealing from any source available to support our family is now my main priority, at any cost. Finally things got started to get better and we finally have a decent home in New Orleans.

As I sat at the coffee shop next to my house; doing my plan on a robbery attempt; a stranger approach. His name was none other than DaKine. He introduce me to his "yakuza" (except in USA its mafia) family to me. I am honored but I need some time to think. Nevertheless, he gives me great advises to the underworld of the mafia. Of course, the yakuza and mafia are totally different in the countries they live; even how the hierarchy structure is different.

After some time thinking about DaKine invitation to his family, I accept, for the sake of my family, just as I promised my dad.

Marietta gives a small round of applause once the man is done speaking. She smiles towards him and nods her head in greeting.

Welcome to the American Mafia, BlackBurnt. It is always good to see people who remember their roots at any point in their career, and who tell such a wonderful tale to share with the rest of us. I enjoyed hearing about the difference between Japan's yakuza organizations and our own, so thank you for that lesson as well.

Keep up your enthusiasm for our life, and you'll go far! Best of luck in New Orleans with DaKine.
