The Giver by Lois Lowry. I am unsure that I really think it is a children's book but it is my favourite in that category. Clearly it is not meant for toddlers but older children. Great book though. Still love it even in my 30s.

Hate the movie though.

The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien. Any book by Tolkien that stems from the Silmarillion is a 100% work of art, and it's hilarious that the Hobbit is a children's book. Amazing how one of the greatest novel and film adaptions comes from a single kids book, ey?

The best children's authors did a boatload of drugs. Alice in Wonderland is a good example, if that was even intended to be a children's book and not just some dude tripping balls in front of a typewriter. Also, anything by Dr. Seuss is amazing. He was the original hip hop artist.
