TL;DR Chopsticks was legit, I was wrong. Every now and then, despite everything pointing one way, it turns out it's another. To prep for the future, I've put a lot of time into logging and data analysis tools to highlight issues. During the Mobsters Vs Monsters event for Halloween, I was tailing a summary of outliers when looking at top performers for the event. I kept seeing Chopsticks name pop up, and then really looked at the data. Understand that a good chunk of useful tools to find cheating has been stripped away by browsers, another good chunk is fakeable. Because of this, certain metrics are pretty much ignored because it can be faked with a few keystrokes, or simply isn't consistent between all the different ways users can play on the site.. The downside of disregarding false positives is sometimes the lack of false positives is just as important as a flood of positives. He was playing in such a way with multiple monitors and screens arranged in such a way that it was as arrange to make it as easy as possible to flip between things. (Think the 3 window wack method of back in the day, but modernized by a 96 hour cocaine fueled bender with 12 hour energy drinks taken hourly because you simply like the taste). I did not want to believe that Chopsticks and his lineage would cheat at this, so I fed all of the data through one of my agents, and then another, and another, and they all agreed. I then jailed him fully satisfied that while they were doing the kills manually, the information side of the equation was being done via automation, and that crossed a line. The problem with that is some assumptions were made about what is feasible for a player to do, and what isn't. I was wrong, the agents were wrong. After a very well put together presentation, he explained all of the methods that he used to play the way he did, minimizing waste. He demonstrated how everything could be done manually, and not just within the rules, but within the spirit of the rules too. Not 'innocent by technicality' but an actual legit innocent. Sometimes you set the bar in the wrong place because in your experience, that is a level of dedication that can't be done for that length of time by normal people. My sincerest apologies |
