The Dragnet Chronicles of Crime

An Organized Crime Investigation 1956

A criminal crackdown was coming. While Hoover was busy working on communist and cold war activities there were still more on the agenda. A new criminal initiative was made between multiple agencies. The new crime lords were growing in power and needed to be controlled. Thus began a dragnet to rake through the underbelly of organized crime.

It all started with business as usual for the community . A heavy crime zone was the initial area of scrutiny. For the most part the neighborhood residents would believe everything was status quo. Shops would open and close on time. There wouldn't be a large in flux of new faces. No it would be a gradual net tossed out over this crime filled area.

The local deli owner opened as usual. He ran numbers out of his shop. No one cared and everyone looked the other way. People got their deli orders without issue. Nothing seemed off.

Next was the local pawn shop. The owner had been haul in by the police for criminal activities. His cousin stepped in to manage the business. No one had ever seen his cousin before. Some found it odd his brother didn't help out but maybe he had other things to handle.

Then there was the diner. A business opened around the clock. Employees came and went without question. The newest staff were a waiter and busboy. Both kept their heads down and just did their work at hand. The owner though seemed to be stressed lately.

Coffee was served like clockwork. A pocket of smoke formed a cloud near one table of heavy smokers. They appeared to be having a breakfast meeting. Nobody bothered to watch the jukebox repairman. Who cared sense he wouldn't be regular staff.

The busboy seemed perfectly content to keep his head down and clear tables. Nobody paid them much attention. After all, help was help. Cops came in for coffee and it was never a problem to the criminals wheeling and dealing right in the same walls. Some cops were on the take and let business operate without disruption.

At the local barbershop Stanley began his day with a clean swept floor. He often overheard information on a daily bases. Stanley had a new rookie stylist that messed up on the daily. Yet nothing that would cause major concern for the clientele. No one knew who an average customer was or not once in a chair for a trim or shave.

Stanley had been cutting hair in the neighborhood for years. He knew his customers, their families, their habits, and more than a few of their secrets. Lately, Stanley had something weighing heavily on his mind. A recent visit from law enforcement had left him with little choice but to cooperate. So he hired Joe and no one would question a new trainee for an established business.

Behind closed doors, a federal investigation was quietly taking shape. The authorities weren't just interested in catching one gangster. They wanted to understand the neighborhood's criminal network. To identify its connections to this boarder based community of criminals. Still they had to keep an eye out for low level street informants. The agency couldn't afford exposing their own activities.

Who's watching whom? And who's about to find themselves caught in the middle? These were the questions on a few lips. Would the crime bosses even know before the net of justice landed on their own head? What have you noticed in the neighborhood? Clearly there was incentives on both sides waiting.....
