The Gold and Diamonds Oasis was a living, breathing dragon hoarding wealth. Filled with cigar smoke, flowing alcohol, and walls of slot machines. Dice held tightly to be toss down onto a green felt table. Blackjack tables in full swing with hopes to hit 21 on everyone's mind. Roulette wheels spun to a rhythm all their own. Round and round like a clock ready to wake the dead from sleep. The life of the casino party was Lady Luck herself. She flirted with high rollers, whispering lies into the ears of the desperate, and regularly bled the suckers dry. She was notoriously fickle and a beautiful nightmare in a sequined dress. She played the harlot with many men. That never stopped a desperate man from begging for a single touch of her fingers on his dice. Behind the operation stood one man Mr. House. A gentleman of considerable means, impeccable wardrobe, and an ego that required its own zip code. He wore a suit of tailored velvet that absorbed the casino lights as he passed by. Fortune was something Mr House considered his birthright. With Lady Luck his submissive slave on the altar of his success. He sauntered through the casino with a confident swagger, tipping his fedora to the patrons. Mr House always has a flirtatious smile for the ladies. His shoes gleamed, his tie was perfectly knotted, almost a work of art with not an ounce of sweat. He didn't need to intimidate anyone. His victims volunteered to fill his bank accounts without blinking an eye at him. He paused beside the dice table, where another unfortunate soul was contemplating his dwindling fortune. "Having a little trouble, old chap?" Mr. House inquired sympathetically. He gave the gentleman a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Don't let a few bad rolls spoil your evening. Lady Luck is still in the house. Perhaps try and find her at a better table. Change things up. It always works for me. Luck has a way of suddenly surprising you." Mr House ever the devil in disguise. He could almost secretly hear the chime of his bank account growing; as he offered a smile to the man looking at his last few chips. With a phantom chuckle, Mr. House drifted back into the shadows, utterly unbothered by the few suspicious glares burning into his back. The beautiful, dirty truth was that Mr. House didn't just chase Lady Luck. He thought he owned her very soul. They’d been tangled up in a wicked, private arrangement for years, and business had never been better. What did it matter if they had a genuine romance or merely a highly profitable secret between the sheets. Everyone had secrets and what did he care about the petty people beneath his wealthy empire. Here Mr House was King! Suddenly, the floor went cold. Lady Luck had vanished. Whispers rippled through the smoky air. Some swore she’d slipped out the back alley into a waiting limousine. Others whispered she’d sabotaged the blackjack cards. Up in the VIP lounge, behind one way glass and a dense cloud of tobacco smoke, Ruby The Beast 26 watched the entire cocky swagger of Mr. House and his self assured airs. A slow predatory grin spreading across her face. Ruby had plans. She always did. There was usually something she could gain from someone else's troubles. But unlike Mr. House, Ruby knew it took more than ego to rise in power. Ruby didn’t wear velvet, and she didn’t do sympathy. A gangster in her own right, she ran the syndicates that House liked to pretend didn't exist. To her, House was nothing but a fragile peacock playing god in a glass house. He had a fickle mistress who was a loose string waiting to be pulled. Ruby swirled the straw in her fancy cocktail glass. Her sharp eyes locked onto the exact moment House’s smile tightened, as the floor went quiet. Ruby knew exactly where Lady Luck had gone. In fact, Ruby had engineered the whole disappearing act. Mr. House never saw it coming in his ego driven pursuit of gathering everyone else's wealth like a miser. Now it would be like a house of cards blown away by the force of a strong storm...the Beast. It hadn't taken much to arrange a stack of chips, and a devastatingly handsome high roller with a sexy charm. Ruby had deployed him like a heat seeking missile. One flash of that killer smile, a few daring bets, and he had successfully whisked Lady Luck right off the floor. They left into the night for a chaotic evening to unfold for poor Mr. House still unaware. Without his prized mistress, House’s impenetrable armor was officially MIA. The Casino was ready for ruin! Ruby picked up a heavy black rotary phone from the corner table. She dialed a private line, listening to the rhythmic clicks until a low voice answered on the other end. "It's Ruby," she said, her voice dropping into a sharp, commanding growl. "The floor is officially wide open. I just cleared the board, and the Gold and Diamond Oasis is ripe for the pickings. I want you to flood the gaming tables right now." Ruby paused, taking a quick sip of her drink as she looked back down at the clueless king below. "Send in everyone who’s hungry. Bring the sharks, the card counters, and the heavy hitters who want to tear off a piece of Mr. House's wealth for themselves. The time is right to make him bleed cold hard cash." She slammed the receiver back onto the cradle. With Lady Luck out of the building, the strict order of the casino floor began to dissolve. It was now time for pure profits to flow out the door. Down on the floor, Mr. House adjusted his cuffs, entirely unaware that his empire would soon be bleeding from the inside out. Win he did, until the moment the lights started to flicker, as Ruby’s heavy hitters began filtering through the front doors... |
