So, in light of recent events and the public whining in the streets by a former (and now deceased) member of the New Scum (and his offspring), I'd like to call upon the masses for their opinions on what it takes to travel down that road of ranking to the esteemed title of Made Man. In New York, Don Daera has enacted several initiatives in which our family members can become involved, ranging from mentoring our newest recruits on the ways of our world and our family specifically, to providing for the safety and security of each and every one of our beloved Scumbags. Everyone is encouraged to get involved. Its not mandatory of course... but then again, neither is Made Man. As evidenced by current events, not everyone who is minimally eligible for their button receives it. Quite a bit goes into our presentations of the button, and for that amount of expended effort, we demand quite a bit of extended effort in return. But not everyone is a fantastic and well rounded individual. Some of our members are rather successful in the money market, providing for the financial well being of the family. Some of our members set up and run great shoppes and bars for the interactivity and camaraderie of the New Scum. Some of our members quietly stalk in the night to take out those who would harm us, or who lie dormant in our cities, taking up space. And some of our members pass along their expertise to those new to the life of crime, ensuring the success of our organization for generations to come. Still, with many unmentioned opportunities still available, each and every organization has their bums; the lazy leeches of family resources and headquarter space who live out their existences in a clouded bubble of entitlement. They are not bad members per se, as they do contribute somewhat to the family finances, but these members are far outshined by their more exemplary counterparts. So, I ask you what you feel it takes within our world and scope of available resources to attain the familial induction? We all know what minimum steps it takes to become Made, but what do you feel truly sets a mafioso apart so that his button is a sure bet? |

I do not believe a trusted family member should have to bend over backwards in order to get their button. My usual philosophy is that a member has to do something to prove he or she DOES NOT deserve it, rather than doing something to earn it. There are a few reasons for this. First of all, to receive loyalty, you must place trust. Sometimes a Boss will get burned for misplaced trust, but more times than not that Boss will be rewarded exponentially with gratitude and loyalty. Secondly, it is important for each mobster to believe that he or she has the ability to continually climb the ladder so long as that mobster is loyal and follows the family rules. This was the motivation that kept around the first few members of my family line, before any of them stuck their necks out and became active and involved. The first of the Swine family were loyal and hardworking, but rather quiet and reserved. To hold any of them back for this reason would have made them question why they offered their hard work and loyalty. Third, it is in the family's best interest to have a high ranked membership. This is sort of a no-brainer. Of course, this does not mean that everyone and anyone should receive their button, but in most cases I believe the benefit of the doubt should be given. As I stated, I believe that generally, a mobster should have the onus to lose their privilege of promotion more so than have to earn it. The way to lose that privilege is to break family rules, be stingy with earnings, show disloyalty or unconcern for family, and some other actions which are not favorable. The tard who inspired Vienna's speech lost his promotion, according to my standards, when he refused the request of his Boss to take on certain responsibilities. I do not believe a family member needs to be proactive in seeking out ways to help the family, but if the Boss comes to him and asks for something to be done, and he says "no", I have to wonder if he has his head screwed on straight. Alas, baby helmets have not been invented yet, and many parents coddle their children and make them believe that they are special, so every once in awhile you will have someone with a sense of entitlement like MadMax. Someone who believes he is so fucking special, that he can refuse his Bosses' requests, sit on his ass and do nothing, and cry like a little bitch when he does not get his way, and still be handed every opportunity and promotion that it is possible to deliver to him. Anyone with a lick of common sense should see an opportunity to please the Boss when it falls in their lap, and take advantage of it. Such a basic skill is a necessity for advancement in any aspect of life. But, you will occasionally find the slacker, the stupid fuck, or the asshole who does not recognize it. The world needs ditch diggers, too. |

| Those are things I'd like to remember as someone that new in this neighborhood. I need money, so I stole some purses, a liquor store. But I don't want to die. I'd like to live with those signs in my back. | |

I've often wondered why MadeMen with many millions and the power of life and death over so many still rob 7/11s. The answer, my friends - because they can! Why not?? A dime's a dime. I find it more curious that they would stalk a shoot a man, a defenceless man who was once in this thing of ours... |

Nothing tastes better than unfathomable sadness. I can see your point FlyingPig, but I do disagree. I feel (and I'm very privileged to find myself in a family where my leader shares this point of view) that Made Man is a right of privilege not of passage. Once you've made that threshold, certainly you've proved yourself to your family that any subsequent promotions are earned and worth the investment. But I'm not sure I agree that Made Man should be given to anyone who hasn't fucked up as a reward for doing the bare minimum to just stay alive. It should be something special, and in order to preserve the prestige and respect that comes with the rank, shouldn't we expect something more from the people we bestow it? |

You are right, Vienna, and we ABSOLUTELY should try to preserve that prestige. But... Realistically, we have a hard time finding even a crewleader who is willing to be more than a clickmonkey. If we were to hold such high standards, there might be less than a handful of Made mobsters inhabiting our cities. If street presence were a requirement, we would see our streets filled with litter. Neither scenario is desirable to me. I would rather just give the majority the benefit of the doubt than to succumb to either of those results, but you are definitely correct in stating that the honor should be earned. |

She climbs out of her monkey suit and smiles. Oh, I'm sorry, I was entertaining the children at the local hospital with my monkey costume and clicking noises. They do so enjoy themselves when I make balloon animals. I hope that they enjoy the baking that I left them... Oh wait, yes, the rank of Made Man. This is a rank that is taken very seriously and is given to those whom we trust. Those whom have worked their asses off. The topic of activity comes to light as always though, where should we be more concerned about such activity taking place? Are we more worried about it being out in public or in our own headquarters with other members of our family. Made Men of a family are just that... Members of a family. They shouldn't have to be forced to be Made Men of the community. If a person has served their family well then that's all that should matter. They don't need to volunteer with me at the local children's ward or feed the homeless at the soup kitchen. They don't need to open a bar or business and serve us. They need to serve their family. They need to support their family. They are not required to be out and about mingling. At least not in my eyes. Maybe we should remember that a Made Man is a member of a family, a family they are loyal to. A family they work for. This honour should not be bestowed upon those that the family leader does not trust, those that are not active within their own headquarters, and those that just generally do not deserve it. I don't hand out this honour arbitrarily. I make sure those that get it truly deserve it. I've even had people commit suicide because they felt they did deserve it yet I did not... Their children joined other families and were given protection the moment they were born in return for their membership. They are now Made Men and above, guess going to the highest bidder has its perks. So, if you will excuse me, I must get down to the orphanage and play the role of clicking monkey again.
