As The Pig Sees It - The "Gimme Auth" Edition Started by: FlyingPig on Aug 24, '08 19:56
Flying Pig steps out of his Philly apartment and takes a seat on the steps leading up to the door. Within seconds, children gather around, birds fly down from the sky to perch on his shoulder, stray cats and dogs lay at his feet and look up at him in awe while occasionally licking his hand. Once a few mobsters begin to look on in curiosity, the Pig begins to speak

Hello, my friends, family, and peers in This Thing of Ours. There has been alot of talk recently about the absence of an established family in a few cities. I do not understand how this is a concern to those whose sole responsibility is to work for their Boss, but I will attempt to placate your interest with a discussion on everything related to "getting auth".

The most important question concerning this, is "Why do you want to run your own family?".

Is it for prestige? Do you want to bask in your awesomeness at seeing yourself strolling the streets wearing a bold jacket? Do you want to strike fear and submission into those under you, those who will ask "how high?" when you say "JUMP!"? Do you think that you will be remembered, and spoken of alongside such amazing, legendary greats as Piggeh, Ulysses, Flying Pig, Maxwell, or alongside other less important great leaders such as Ganelon, Uncle Nicky, Anita, Scotland, or Ellis?

If it is for any of those reasons, you are starting off on the wrong foot already. If your desire is one based out of ego, you are in for a rude awakening when you don that bold jacket. You are going to find out that there is WORK involved. It is not all about looking great. You will find out that your critics have multiplied. It is one thing to be a mediocre mafioso, but a mediocre CL draws criticism and complaints from all corners. Many are even willing to die just to tell you how much you suck. If you want to strike fear into others, it will take more than a bold jacket. I'm not afraid of clothing. My bullets can pierce a nice jacket just as easily as they can pierce a ripped up t-shirt. It is not your position in La Cosa Nostra that strikes fear into anyone. It is how you handle yourself, your ability back up words with actions, your reputation, and your carefully chosen words. Or maybe you just want your name written in the history books? Maybe being a CL is a starting point for that, but it is not a necessary step and it is obviously not a sufficient step. In our history, there have been more leaders come and go than I can count. How many of them are remembered? How many are remembered even two weeks after their deaths? Very few. Chances are, if you are not doing the things that will get you remembered BEFORE you are a CL, you will not be remembered for anything you do AFTER you are a CL. People are born with greatness. It does not suddenly exude from their being after they are given a position of responsibility.

Another question, since it is the inspiration for many aspirations, is "What defines greatness?.

You do not need to be a crewleader to be remembered as being great. Being great is striving to be the best at whatever it is you do. Many remember and consider Tallien the best RHM of all time. He practically ran Oberon's family for him. Who? Oberon. Yeah, that's right. The RHM might be remembered even more so than the CL. That is not to say that Oberon is not memorable. He was a great leader who left his mark, but when thinking about his family, it is his RHM who sticks out as the most important piece of the puzzle. The status Tallien achieved as a RHM to Oberon shadows the accomplishments of one of Tallien's descendants, Deviant, who became a crewleader. Who? Deviant. Point made. My own bloodline is remembered for being great hitsquad leaders and hitmen. The times that my relatives have chosen to wear a bold jacket have been few. It is a thankless job, and my ancestors understood this fact. They also understood that it was not necessary to be the Boss in order to achieve greatness. Being the best at what you do will suffice.

A family prospers best when a group of people gather together, utilizing their specific talents, to make a powerful and well organized structure. Oftentimes I have seen collections of individuals who are "only in it for themselves". They use the family to rank up, then branch out on their own to start their own family. That is what they intended from the beginning. This actually reeks of disloyalty. A family is not a means to an end. It is the end in itself. When each member wishes to leave to pursue their own agenda, the power becomes diluted and the family becomes weaker. Of course, this does not mean that no one should ever leave a family to run their own. It only means that there is something to be said for putting the welfare of the family over one's own ambitions.

My final question today is "Do you think you deserve it?.

Many people want the honor of running their own family. Why should the council of Bosses select you over the others? Because you have...oh my God!...managed to rank to Capo? Gee whiz, Sparky, so have countless others. What have you done on the way to that glorious rank? Have you set an example to others? Are you out in the streets contributing to the heart and soul of our cities? Have you risked your own neck to protect your Boss or other members of your family? Have you taken that job in the family that needed to be filled, but nobody else wanted? Have you taken that job in the family that everybody wanted, and put more effort into it than was required? Have you selflessly given all your earnings to your Boss, in order to ensure the safety of the family, while keeping only enough for yourself to secure future drug investments?

Many people say that street presence is not required to be a great leader. I have to ask, if this is true, then what is important? What sets an auth candidate apart for others seeking the glory and honor? Loyalty? Fuck that. EVERYBODY should be loyal, or should be wearing cement shoes. That is not a feather in one's cap, it is required of all. Hard work? Pretty much the same thing. If you want to progress even to Mademan, you should be a hard worker. Fulfilling a job in the family? Well...that helps, but really, it should be a standard rung on the ladder. You do not just leap from member number #28 to Family Boss in one step. Have you become teh uber jailbreaker, ranking from Gangster to Capo in 8.3 seconds? That hardly demonstrates leadership capability.

Are you someone who others look at, and say "Man, I want to be like that guy or girl"? I hope so, because that is a huge part of being a Boss. You are supposed to be the cream of the crop. The best the cities have to offer. When a new immigrant jumps off the ship and sees your name in bold, they should be safe to assume that you are the one who is one of the most highly respected members of our society, not some lucky bloke who had friends in the right places.

What does it take?

A Boss should have alot of time on his or her hands. Three hours per day to devote to family affairs does not cut it. A Boss should have no life outside of work. Sad, but true. It is the sacrifice that must be made for the glory. This is one of the reasons that many old timers do not want the job anymore. Strange, then, that so many newer family lines are anxious to take up the mantle even though they can offer no more time than these old timers.

A Boss should know how things work in La Cosa Nostra. Being a CL isn't a training program. That training should have been completed by being a RHM, a HSL, a LHM, or a SCL. At the very least, ancestors of the auth candidate should have held these positions, and passed down that knowledge to subsequent generations.

A Boss should be active in the streets. I touched on this already. It is a highly debated assertion, but I have thought long and hard about it and have concluded that it is what separates the deserving from the undeserving, and what qualifies leaders of past days as legends, as opposed to those who are forgettable. You cannot be remembered if you are not seen or heard. That should be common sense.

A Boss should have a firm backbone. "People pleasers" do not make it in this position. A Boss should stand firm in their decisions if they believe them to be correct, and not let others persuade them to alter their judgment. Presumably, the Boss has the experience necessary to use good judgment, so the correctness should not be at issue. It is when a Boss is a doormat and allows others to influence him or her that they are no longer a leader, but rather a lemming.

A Boss should have good organizational skill and be willing to delegate authority to qualified individuals. I emphasize "qualified individuals". Ancestors of my own have had close friends who have wanted positions of authority. It was unfortunate that my ancestors have to refuse them, but it is important that a Boss can place trust in the decisions of those they delegate. How many times have we seen a CL killed for the poor decisions of a RHM or LHM? The most recent case of this happening was just a day ago. It happens alot. A Boss needs to be able to disappoint those they care about and put the welfare of the family ahead of their own popularity.

Ideally, and Auth candidate should be approached by his or her Boss, not the other way around. If the Boss approaches YOU, you know you have earned it. If you have to nag the Boss for auth, you are probably one of a handful nagging the Boss daily.

FlyingPig stands up from his seat, the birds fly off, and the stray animals and children return to their homes and alleyways. The Pig nods his head towards the remaining gathered mobsters, hoping that he has shone some light on a subject of utmost importance. He kicks one of them in the ribs, then returns to his apartment.

Shade stumbles a bit after being kicked, then stands up.

I'm sure that wasn't needed, but always appreciated. Now, onto the discussion at hand.

Why would I ever want to run my own family?

The thought of running a family excites and scares me. Exciting, because you get to step out on your own, and lead an esteemed group of hard-working mafiosos and make tons of money. Shade chuckles Ok, maybe not that much about the money, but you see my point? The work that goes into having a family, and leading that family, comes when the dust settles. After your enemies are down, and you can live in peace. Thats when organized crime becomes a great place to be. Everyone makes money, no one fights, problems are dealt with swiftly and securely. Its a mafia utopia.

What defines greatness?

Greatness - the objective form of "to be great". However, much more goes into it than one may think. Greatness isn't just in your own eyes. Its how the people around you see you. As you look at the streets, some step up, take the pedestal, and shout what they think at people, whether they care or not. Rather than some, who have people bring them the pedestal, and have an audience listening intently to what they say. So, What defines greatness? The people listening and watching everyday that need something to look up to.

Do I think I deserve it?

No. I don't think I have done nearly enough in this life to even try and ask for respect. It seems more important that you give respect at my current stage in life, rather than ask for it. So that maybe, when I'm older and more experienced, I can truly know what its like to be at the bottom, and rise to the top.

As for the group of comments at the end of your speech pertaining to how CLs are to act, I agree with them all. A leader must be experienced, patient, active, kind, but also stand up for what he/she believes in. Personally, I couldn't have put that last part together any better than Mr. Pig up there. Well done. This speech was much needed and much appreciated.

Shade sits back down and listens intently to any other responses.

Mr Pig you have opened my eyes to a lot of things in this thing of ours, and I am know going to try and work harder on those things. I think that you are right on with everthing you have said and I am grateful for what you have said. I wish everybody would read this and take it to heart and then there would be great for everybody to take and use these words of wisdom
Report Post Tip
Amen, brother! I may be the first of my line involved with mafia afairs, but I agree with you. My line have been involved with other large organizations and people wanting power have always been a problem. Thanks for opening people's eyes to this major problem. Maybe they will think about their actions now.
Report Post Tip
As usual Pig you are extremly right and there is nothing in your speech to correct. Many people do not know such things and as my parents and grand-parents have quickly learned I have also: My bloodline does not have the makings to be a Boss but we just might have the makings to help our Family better itself.

"All who dream big must stand on the shoulders of a giant."

Personally I would like nothing more to be that giant. If I can help one person get up there and do something great I will be proud.
Report Post Tip
FlyingPig, you are one of if not the most elegant speakers i have had the pleasure of listening to, with that i would like to add what i hope to do.

I hope to make it to Made Man, or even higher. I hope to help other people achieve great things, and do that whilst being their right hand man. I hope that the youngsters will notice the influence id like to have on someone else, and learn from it.

JD walks up to FlyingPig after hearing pigs speech, and says

"So ill tell everyone what i think about getting authorized to be a Crewleader in this life we live. Why do i want to run my own family? I think everyone that has proven themselves worthy of being considered should have a chance to prove themselves further by actually donning a bold suit.

What defines greatness you ask? Well to be great you need to know what your doing, and have absolute confidence in it. There is no room for a Crewleader who has to eenie-meenie-miney-moe their way around hard decisions. That, paired with knowing whats going on around you.

Also, being able to converse on a regular basis with those who hold power in other families is important. You will get nowhere in this life without proper communication skills, and a good sense of when to say what.

Do you think you deserve it? Well it doesn't really matter what i think, there's only a select few who can decide my future from here, although however much id like to think i deserve it, we'll let that decision be left to the Dons.
Report Post Tip
So John, you think that anyone who has been considered should eventually get an opportunity to prove themselves further, but what is "proving yourself"?

When I ask the question, "Why do you want to run your own family?", to answer "To prove yourself" is not an answer. What exactly is it you want to do, and why do you want auth to do it?

I will give you an example. About two years ago, an ancestor of mine named Piggeh hesitantly accepted auth from Achilles. The only reason he wanted it was to clean up the cities that were besieged with poor leadership. It was shortly after an apocalypse that left many dead. Achilles was perhaps the only competent crewleader at the time, and he was considering retirement. Piggeh accepted auth to demonstrate quality leadership to the others, and to kill those who were too lazy or apathetic to lead competently.

It is a leader's responsibility to ensure that La Cosa Nostra is run by competent individuals. Sitting on your hands and watching the other cities fall to slums is not responsible leadership. This was why Piggeh wanted auth. "Proving yourself" should be done before receiving auth. If you have not already proven yourself, you have no business being considered for the position. It is not a training ground, as I already mentioned.

The reason for wanting your own family should be a concrete reason that involves making some sort of improvement in your city or throughout the entire infrastructure.
Report Post Tip
What concrete reason do i have for wanting authorization? Well, off the top of my head I can think of a few, so i think I shall share them with this wonderful crowd today, if that's ok with you FlyingPig.

First of all i would like to openly say that if i was authed to run a city, my city of choice would be Detroit. I would like to run Detroit as a 'playground' for new mafiosos to these shores. My main reason behind this is that i want to help pave a solid foundation for a well respected future of said mafiosos. Too many people have suffered the wrath of not having a mentor, a safe-home, a guardhouse; resulting in them doing things that end in their untimely deaths.

I would like to provide shelter to the homeless in Detroit, all of the sleeping bums on the side of the street gives a bad name the the people who really run major cities; the mafia. What self respecting mafioso can call himself successful, when on the other end of the spectrum there are hobos rotting in the street?

As to the why i want the auth to do it; I would like to be the person that the youngsters can remember in their old age, and think 'He was a great mentor.' I of course could mentor the new civilians directly off the boat without being a CL, however it would mean more if i was. The act of someone reaching out to help you is kind yes, but in turn isn't the act of someone in power taking the time to do it that much better?

Another reason i would like to be a CL is to show all of the people who think they will never get authed, that it can be done, all it takes is some effort in the streets, standing up for what you believe in, and having your priorities set in mind. That's another thing that is crucial to have as a CL, a set list of priorities. If the youngsters see that I had all of those things, and it got me authed, then maybe the next generation won't be such a bunch of dunderheads as some of the people we see nowadays. Thanks for your time folks, lets hear your thoughts.

Richard walks up to where he hears the speech about people wanting to get authorized and what they would if they got it

I'm fairly new to these streets and not been here long enough to even talk about me wanting a position as such, but I would like to say it would be nice to see JD as one of these leaders you speak of. My reasons being he is one of the best speakers we have excluding nobody. He does help new comers. I also believe in fair chance.

Look at some of the post he has done all in my eyes top grade speeches. To me that is one great thing to be able to do if your going to be leader in my eyes. Due to this i'm sure he is well know around here another great thing to have if you becoming a Cl. I know i'm new and I think he is pretty good and from what I can tell has great character, and that I know of has done no wrong. If he has done wrong obviously it hasn't been too bad or he would of been punished for it.

The second would be he does take time and help people even the ones that isn't in his crew and I speak of this cause he has helped me personally. Now I don't wish to take nothing from nobody but I do think he would be one of the best and if he's not I guess you could always let me go. Like so many of our other Cl's.

The third I also believe in this fair chance I think if you have made it through the ranks and are eligible for a position of such that maybe you should be looked at. I also know that as you guy's have stated that opening the books is a privilege and not something that has to be done but we do have a couple opening slots that would be nice if filled. We have city's just going down hill nothing going on no new businesses or anything, and maybe thats something that needs to be brought to the table if you do get Cl of a city there must be two new businesses that go up. Hopefully that will make a city grow and also would be a nice place to stop in and congratulate the new Cl.

Again I would like to add i'm new to these streets and I may not share the same idea's of alot of you's guy's. In my eyes though I do thank this man JD would be a good candidate and I don't think there would be too many people that disagree with me. If you do see him unfit for any reason anyone I would like to know why if at all possible..Thank you guys for listening.

Waits patiently for the next guys speech.

Noob listens to FlyingPig talk about auth and watches as people reply with comments relating

to themselves or others. He jumps in and gives his two cents...

As we have already seen, the worst thing that can happen in reply to this speech is that people come here and start to ramble on about why they should be authed, what they have that makes them different and why they think about greatness.

Which in my eyes helps them in no way to get auth. Why would you need to come to the streets and

answer all the questions proposed. FlyingPig has already covered this in a way but if you have all of the above criteria, you would not need to be here explaining why you have all the above.

The worst thing I have seen recently is people coming to the streets and talking JUST because they want auth. They come here and talk about x, y and z just so that people will see they are in the streets and are HELPING the community grow. All I see is people coming here, saying their part and leaving hoping someone will reply so they can keep a conversation going and have their name plastered everywhere.

To people that do this all I can ask is WHY?

The skill is to put yourself in the frame without making it seem too obvious. Assuming you want it in the first place.

Noob speaks the truth. Its great to see activity in the streets and reaffirm the notion that we live in an active community and not just some ghost town, but if all you have to add are stuffy retorts and forced generic answers to even more generic questions the today is no better than it has been in the past.
