What about the right hand? Started by: Anne_Boleyn on Aug 24, '08 22:44
We have heard talk over and over again about what it takes to be a crew leader; what questions you should ask yourself, what qualities you should have, what your goals should be. I have not seen a debate about what it takes to be a right hand.

Some people would argue that you should have the same qualities to be a right hand as a crew leader. This is all well and good if you have the people who have been right hands before, no new people who want to be right hands, and people who do not strive to leave their right hand position to be a crew leader themselves.

When these three possibilities have run out, what would it take to become a NEW right hand? The right hand's responsibilities vary from crew to crew, depending on how the crew is run. The right hand could have a lot of power, being basically a second crew leader when the person in bold is not around. They could also have very little responsibility, basically holding down the fort while the crew leader is away but not being able to make any decisions themselves.

In a perfect world, the responsibility of the right hand would be between the two extremes, leaning more toward the role of the crew leader. But who should be chosen to fill this role? Is it possible for a person fairly new to our shores to fulfill this responsibility, or should it always be someone who has walked a mile in their own shoes? Should it be someone who aspires to be a crew leader eventually, or someone who would want to be a right hand for an extended period of time?

Also, it is said that a crew leader should be active in the streets. We have seen quite a few right hands who speak a great deal as well. Should this be a requirement for right hands as well as crew leaders? Or can we allow right hands to be somewhat mute and conduct business behind the scenes?

Speaking of that, is it fair to the right hand to make them take full responsibility along with the crew leader, or is it ok to give them a little bit of leeway and blame the crew leader if there are any problems? It seems that in wars, the right hand is one of the first people to go down along with the crew leader. But in the past, a crew leader has been taken down for the actions of the right hand.

If the answer to all of these questions is that it depends on the crew leader, then why do we not have such lenient standards for a crew leader? Why does it seem to be that we have strict standards for what we expect out of a crew leader but not a right hand? Is the whole position full of hypocrisy and 'well it depends on the situation' type answers?

I am anticipating highly to see what everyone thinks, especially the current right hands. I have never seen anyone really speak out about right hands until one does something wrong.

Well, right hands are supposed to be deputies right? So I guess it is intended to be training to be a crew leader. I think that crew leaders should offer their right hand some power to test them and allow them to test themselves.

i agree, however i think there must be an agreement between the Crewleader and their right hand man. Say JohnnyCL wanted his right hand man TimmyCivilian, to have a lot of power, but Timmy didn't feel up to it, then he might screw up and be killed; which would be unfair because poor timmy didn't want the power.

Whatever amount of power the Boss delegates to the RHM may be irrelevant. In the eyes of every other Boss in the country, the RHM is the acting Boss when the Boss is not around. That means that certain decisions MUST be made by the RHM if the leader is not around.

An example: a certain wiseguy is going around shooting at members of my family. The wiseguy's Boss is unavailable, but the RHM is available. Out of respect, I will notify the RHM and demand that the wiseguy is immediately killed.

What is that RHM going to do? Say "no, my Boss might be pissed off"? I hardly think so. The RHM had better act, and act quick.

What if the RHM exhibits conduct that is threatening to another family? It does not matter how the RHM is seen by his Boss. All that matters to the other families is that the RHM is in a position of power and acts on behalf of the CL. If that RHM is posing a threat, then that family is posing a threat. The RHM dies, the CL dies, everyone dies. Everyone is sad except me, Flying Pig, I am happy, because it is always funny when people die.

Given this perception, the RHM must be capable of leading a family and have the same skills and experience as the Boss. There is no such thing as limited authority in a RHM. A RHM cannot avoid the responsibility which is implied in the position.

Well, many of my ancestors have been RH's at points in their lives, and they have passed down stories of what it takes to be a good, or great RHM. Here is a quick rundown of some of the requirements my family sees in a good RH.

1.Respect. Not only should a RH be a respected person in mafia, but they should have respect, for not only themselves and their family, but for their enemies and allied families alike. It takes respect to be respected.

2.Loyalty A RH has to be very commited to his boss, and his entire family. He/she will be dealing with alot of sensitive information regarding the crew and its functions. A RH must know how to keep their mouth shut.

3.Disipline. A RH must be disiplined enough to make smart choices. They need to know how to keep their mouth shut, and how to realize when to shoot, or to talk things out. They must be smart enough to make the best decisions for the family.

4.Social Skills. The RHM needs to be talkative, not only in the streets, as the leader is, but within the family as well. If his own family doesnt know him, how will they be able to listen to him and follow him when crunch time comes?

5.An Iron Fist RH's need to be strong and decisive when it comes to dealing with problem family members. If someone breaks the rules, the leader shouldnt be bothered with dealing with them, he has bigger fish to fry. The right hand needs to deal with them quickly, and firmly, to be certain they learn from their mistakes.

Now I could go on all night about this stuff, but I really should be getting home to the Mrs. Have a good day!

tips his hat and speedily walks down an alley.

I personally believe that the RHM is to stay with the Crew Leader, stay by his/her side until death. Picking a RHM isn't about "testing" someone to be a CL. Its about trust. RHMs have nearly as much power as the CL, therefore, there must be a special bond between them that allows them to think alike. Anne posed an especially good topic, since RHM are yet to be a current Street topic. So, what is in a RHM?

Like FP has mentioned, RHM IS the boss when the CL isn't around. His word is truth regardless. Some RHMs may work their entire lives away for their boss and not get the recognition they deserve. So, it doesn't seem fair to put blame on both CL and RHM if something goes wrong, but they must also take the fall for each other and trust each other.

And Telkin, I'm pretty sure Timmy won't be a RHM if he doesn't want to.

To be a RHM is like being a crew leader. So ask your this what does it take to be a crew leader and you should get your answer for this question and also there is so many possibilities to answer this question, so it will be kinda hard to answer this question with a accurate response to this question.
