The RIOT! Started by: Marietta on Aug 25, '08 22:43
Deep in the heart of Detroit, on a quiet little street in a small neighborhood a building was currently undergoing a remodel. Men in dusty working clothes ran around with spare nails, screws and the occasional can of paint. A tiny, greasy little man in a business suit stood in the entrance to the quaint office building, pointing his fingers wildly and shouting at the construction crew until he was purple in the face. "She'll be here soon!" his screams echoed across the grassy, fenced in lot. "Hurry the feck up, will ya?!" Wiping his brow with the back of his hand he noticed a tiny gaggle of people watching from across the street. Recognizing them as the regulars from a family diner he waved his hand dismissively. "Bugger off, will ya? Damn gawkers." His ears perked up at the sound of a car approaching and immediately his stomach flipped in fear. "Oh sweet Jesus she's early."

A Ford slid smoothly up to the curb, the slow hum of the engine cutting out as the driver put it into park and killed the power. Slowly an older gentleman stepped out of the driver's seat, pausing briefly to tip his hat at an older couple passing by. He shuffled toward the passenger side of the vehicle, reaching out a weather-worn hand and opening the rear door. With a bright smile a blond woman exited, smoothing her black skirt and tan jacket. Her green eyes sparked as she stepped forward towards the construction site; behind her two more women slid across the leather seat and set foot upon the pavement. The weasel-like man cleared his throat obnoxiously and scuttled towards her, extending his right hand. "Marietta! So good to see you!"

Mister Giovanni, Marietta said dryly, not tearing her eyes away from the building and ignoring his attempt at a handshake. These are my associates, Delilah and Lily.

"Lovely to meet you, ladies," Giovanni simpered towards the two females. They both shot him a tiny grin in return before focusing their vision towards the same area as Mari. The group stood in silence for a moment. Marietta allowed her eyes to cover every inch of the brick siding, the multiple windows and the green double doors.

Is it even finished? she asked with a slight frown.

Giovanni spluttered, staring at the woman in horror. "Within hours, Miss Rossi. It is nearly done."

The answer seemed to please the young woman, for she smiled once more and inclined her head. Brilliant. This is most exciting. Taking in the sight of the corner building that was soon to be her new headquarters, Marietta turned, blinking at the crowd of people that was steadily growing larger.

Friends of yours? she asked the man. "Some of the locals. Some admirers. And some, er, 'potential clients'," he said with a raised eyebrow. She nodded in understanding and waved her hand towards Delilah and Lily. Lets go make an 'unofficial' press statement, was the last thing she remarked. Looking both ways she crossed the street cautiously, approaching the gathered men and women.

Hello, she called in greeting. I am Marietta Rossi, owner of 'Rossi and Co. Clothing Distributors'. As you can see we're in the process of moving in. Mari paused to eye a few of the people in a back, recognizing a few associates of old. Hopefully, soon, our business will be underway and we can become a valuable asset to your city.

She stood frozen for a moment, clasping her hands together and staring at the buildings lining either side of the road with a blank expression. After awhile she began to examine her fingernails dismissively, pursing her lip in disgust. I need to get these done, she remarked to Lily quietly. Her words seemed to be enough for most of the civilians, who then began to continue on their way, some imparting well wishes upon the women. Soon thereafter only a small collection of people remained, staring at Marietta expectantly.

I assume that explanation wasn't satisfactory for you ladies and gentleman? she stated with a winning smile. A smattering of laughs rose from the group and she held her hands up as if she were being caught in wrong doing.

Can't put anything past you. Obviously the rumors have spread and yes, they are true. Thanks to the powers that be and the current leaders of the Seven Cities, I am being blessed with the opportunity to run my own faction out of Detroit. It will be rough and we will struggle for a bit, but hopefully our cover as a clothing distributor will help to cement our position here.

Marietta took a breath and gestured towards the two well-dressed young ladies standing on either side of her. I am overjoyed to be working with my two closest friends and partners in crime, Lily and Delilah, in this somewhat nerve-wracking venture. Pausing for a laugh she continued, What? I'm allowed to be nervous! Between the three of us I have faith we will be able to keep organized crime in Detroit on the rise.

A lanky man towards the middle of the crowd raised his hand and nodded to get Marietta's attention. With a polite nod back she smiled, encouraging him to interrupt. "Miss Rossi," he said, "Sal Lombardi with the Tribune. Tell me, what are your plans for the city now that you will be conducting business here?"

She pursed her lips in thought for a moment, glancing sidelong at Delilah and Lily. As long as my family is here, the Motor City will always remain a starting point directed towards the newest members of This Thing of Ours. I have recently, er, 'procured' some zoning permits for some of the emptier spots downtown, and plan to begin building a few places where those young ones to find a leg up before beginning their mobster careers. Of course, they will be masked as homeless shelters, but rest assured fresh-faced thugs and gangsters alike will be taken care of, ensuring their survival and success in this world.

We, the family, will continue to work tirelessly to make damn sure that the business, and the city itself, remains well-kept and competitive in the market for mob activity.

Another round, squat man closer to her piped up. "Henry Williams, The Gazette. Miss Rossi, what are your goals in this endeavor?"

Well I suppose that's simple. Just like everyone else, I don't want to fuck up.

She laughed, joined by a large majority of the people.

In all seriousness, my goal is to do my best. To lead a small faction of people and work very closely with them in making The Streets and businesses of Detroit a more profitable, prosperous place.

Small coughs to the side of her made Marietta turn to eye an older woman with short, steel gray hair. Yes?

"Marietta," she said with a snotty tone, "And what about Tea Time?"

Biting her bottom lip, Mari closed her eyes briefly in thought before giving a small grin towards the crowd.

Many of you most likely want to see the project abandoned. Currently Tea Time is the only city-wide tabloid that is published with regularity. In light of such, I would like it to be continued, so as to provide entertainment to those mobsters that do enjoy it. As long as there are the reporters, I will keep my stead as Editor-In-Chief.

Saying that, I would also like to point out that the gossip rag was intended to poke fun at many different people, including the current leadership. Since I am now one among those ranks, I would like to encourage anyone who has any issue with me, my family or otherwise to submit articles to Tea Time. If you write it, I will print it unedited. Well, barring typos or grammatical errors. Feel free to call me a... gratuitous whore if that's what you so choose... as long as it's printed in Tea Time. I won't tolerate any such abuse anywhere else, as I'm sure many of the other current City Heads would not.

Taking a deep breath her green eyes scanned the crowd once more. I think that's everything, Marietta said. Pleasure to speak to you all.

One last, lone voice carried from the back of the street. "Miss Rossi! What will your family call themselves?"

A smile painting its way onto her face the blond turned, remarking, We will be called 'The Riot!'. Once again, thank you all.

Turning around, Mari was followed back across the street by the brunette and other blond. Shortly thereafter the slimy Giovanni stumbled to meet them, talking animatedly and leading them into the building for a tour.
