Famine drifted aimlessly down a side street, before settling at a corner, close to some street vendors as they called out offers on their days wares. At least two of the street vendors suddenly felt terribly hungry and strode purposefully off in search of a restaurant to spend some of the early morning takings. Famine flicked a lock of white hair from his eyes and watched two miserable looking cats as they huddled in a doorway. "I heard a story recently, down near the docks and around the time that the ship carrying the chemicals capsized in the harbour. It began with a young man carrying his all his wordly belongings in the manner of Huckleyberry Finn. He may have been fresh off a boat down there, but in the absence of any further information, it's not for me to speculate." Famine watched a small and bedraggled boy begging for loose change from passers-by with polite interest before continuing. "This young man was making his way to a local tenement block when he was accosted by a well-dressed individual, accompanied by a number of men. The individual gave the young man instructions on how he might establish connections in what presumably was a new country. The offer of work may well have been further down the road, but alas, I hear the conversation never did proceed this far. The young man went on his way, only to later learn that the individual was the Don of a Mafia family and an influential person indeed. Doubtless their pitch was one given to thousands of out-of-work sailors and dockers and word for word for all the young man knew, but I'm told he was impressed as it was the thought that counted. The story bred an interesting thought in the minds of all who heard it. Is a Don of the people a better way to run your organisation than from an ivory tower? Is it better to stay locked up in your own White House, seeing only your trusted lieutenants on issues worth your time, or should you get out there, walk among the street vendors and speak to the lowest among us? |

| I'm no Don and its hard to say how I might personally handle my business, but in my opinion for those that achieve that place within our community it is their prerogative as to how they wish to conduct themselves. Should they choose to delegate from a hidden throne they may do so and have success on the other hand should they wish to walk the streets and bask publicly in their glory no one will stop them. Once such a position of power is reached a mafioso can conduct themselves in whatever manner they see fit without criticism. | |
