| Subcrews and Recruitment | Started by: Fredio on Aug 28, '08 15:01 |

I shall try to be brief, my aim is not to lecture or point fingers, I merely wish to point out what I see as a flaw in the current, generally accepted recruitment system. I obviously haven't had experience in every crew out there, but my ancestors have been in a very many crews, 99% of which were based around what I will call the "traditional system". The "traditional system" is the name I use to describe a command heirarchy which has the leader at the top, followed by a RHM, LHM and Consig, with the rest of the crew placed in a sub crew type structure where the SCL acts as the go-to-guy for the lower rankers. The problem is it doesn't really work. The way things stand currently; a new potential Mafioso will be born into this world and if they are smart, will instantly start looking around. They will find a crew leader with a shiny bold suit on, and after sending that leader a polite and proper invitation request, they will 99 times out of 100 be given an invite to that crew. It is at that singular point that the trouble begins. You may quote fancy idealistic dogma at me, hypothetical situations involving perfectly obedient crew members, but the truth of the matter is that most mafioso's, having had access to the boss at the very start of their mafia career, will adopt the boss as their go-to guy and treat the SCL as an unnecessary layer of abstraction. With a traditional subcrew structure a group of individuals is told by their CL that their go-to guy ought to be their SCL. Any questions ought to be directed to him, as well as any problems or other issues. This is fine in theory, but when one considers the practicalities this method falls down. A key requirement of being a CL is that they should be awake and active a lot. It is therefor reasonable to suspect that a CL will easily surpass a SCL in terms of time spent active. If someone has a question or especially a problem it is highly likely that they will direct it at a person they have spoken to before, who is online. Because of the recruitment process that person is the CL 9 times out of 10. In my view this totally undermines the whole point of the subcrew system. I understand that forces beyond our control prevent us from giving SCL's the power to invite people to their crews, but perhaps if invitation requests had to be directed at SCL's instead of CL's, the whole concept of a subcrew might be far more relevant and worthwhile. Better yet, why not ditch the subcrew structure in exchange for a system where any Made Man can issue invites and be your go-to guy, thus almost always ensuring there is someone online who is not the boss to whom you can speak? We might never reach a stage where Mademen can actually issue invites, but if the accepted rule was that you had to go through a Made Man to get an invite, the whole system might make a lot more sense. Your thoughts please. Fredio |

Bunsen pops his head round the corner, enticed by Fredios speech, he decides to step in and have his say "First of all, I would like to say that your speech doesn't look like you are pointing fingers, so thats a good start. Aaaaah yes, the traditional ranking system. To repeat what you have stated, it is not put in place by ALL Family Heads but the majority do see it as a bona fide ranking system for their Family." "What you are saying is true, but only hypothetically. Okay, I admit that I have seen a lot of cases of what you are talking about, but I really do think it depends on the type of Family Head and mafioso thats put in place. If the newly made Gangsters natural habit is to heavily rely on other people then more than likely, they will immediately go to the Family Head if they don't see their Sub Crew Leader around. But this could also depend on how well the person is taught the way of the Gangster. If we have a semi-committed Family Head or veteran Mafioso acting as a teacher then can you really blame the newly made Gangster for being very reliant on other people to solve his/her problems?" "It could also be put down to the Family itself. If the person is part of a Family that is not big on communication or don't see the new people as the Leaders of tomorrow, then this could quickly turn into a hostile surrounding. If you are brought up in a hostile surroundings then perhaps you would only go to one person, the big cheese? Okay that maybe debatable, but I think it could be classed as a valid point." "If the Family Head is known for their generosity rather than their hot gun then they would be easy to approach. I have known truly great Leaders in the past that have paved the way for all of us, to not be able to say no to people in need. I'm not stating this as a sign of weakness, but it can be troublesome when a Family Head is bogged down with requests that could easily be dealt with by the RHM or lower." "I also think its the Gangsters fault. I'm sorry but I don't think I have EVER seen a Family with only the Family Head being present. There is always other people to go to. Even if this person is not directly linked to their Sub Crew, if they are at a high rank than themselves then they could be able to help. All it takes is common sense, something that a small minority seem to lack." "The basis of my comment is the possible reasons as to why one might think it's best to communicate their problems or queries with the Family Head, rather than the appointed person. All in all, I still think Sub Crews are a good feature in the Head Quarters, but I think it needs to be tweaked by the Family Head. This all depends on the way the Family Head Quarters is ran. It could be dealt with by numerous solutions. This could range from the Family Heads being stricter on the culprits, to having more and smaller Sub Crews being put in place." Bunsen chuckles to himself "I hope that I've helped Fredio, even if it was in a microscopic way." |

| It is my opinion that it is vital that the sub crew leader take an active interest in the members placed under his command. Because of the connection crew members have already formed with the head of the family it is important for the sub crew leader, after appointment, seek out his crew members and establishes a re pore with his mafiosi. He is also integral in promoting cohesion within the sub crew and conducting contests and various activities to promote activity amongst his troops. If the sub crew leader does these things effectively he will achieve the authority that is essential to this hierarchical structure. The sub crew leader is also vital to the information gathering process and is able to quickly and efficiently gather the necessary reports to give his bosses a better idea of the mechanics of the grew making the crew as a whole generally more effective. | |

I'm in agreement with Strabo. Subcrew leaders need certain skills to be successful. A short list of said skills should include organization, a willing to socialize with those under them, and a willing to learn to lead by working from the bottom to the top. My ancestors first subcrew leader possessed these skills and kept his group very close. By taking the time to speak to each of us daily, he helped strengthen the bond between the subcrew members and ultimately made my ancestor feel a sense of loyalty to his crew and fellow family mates. Because of this bond, future generations were also able to accomplish things. My point is, the position of subcrew leader is more important than some might think. Those in the bold suits don't always have the time to speak on a daily basis to each member of their family. It's too many people to deal with. Therefore, they need people capable of creating bonds within the family, and thusly, should hire people capable of doing such things. In my opinion, the position is much more than a title and it's a lot more work than some might think. If you have the right people in those positions though, you're able to bring the smaller groups together and create loyalty and a greater work ethic, which, of course, helps strengthen the family as a whole. |

I agree with Hitch. A sub-crew leader is the forgotten talent. Its all about creating that bond that makes us all feel like a family. If your sub-crew leader isn't active and doesn't communicate with his sub-crew then there is no point for him to be a sub-crew leader. But, on the other hand I have been in some pretty successful families that used very different systems. So the traditional theory isn't always the best. That of course is the preference of whom ever is wearing the bold suit. |

The more significant underlying issue here, is why is that member not obedient? The position of Boss and the high members of the family structure are becoming cheapened. My first ancestor was in awe of the brilliant men and women who led the cities. That first ancestor was intimidated to even talk to any of them. These days, you get arrogant mobsters who think they are equal to their Boss, even though they are not yet Made in the family. The more important consideration here is to restore respect for authority. Are we mobsters or babysitters? A babysitter could expect a disobedient child, but a mob boss should not expect an insubordinate family member. If a family member has an emergency, most family policies provide that they seek an audience with the Boss, but general questions that are not urgent can wait for the Capo to come around the HQ. |

Noob listens in on the conversation from his regular spot on a bench in the street, he thinks about his fore fathers and how things are now and how they used to be and how the chain of command is meant to be I think FlyingPig makes a good point of how the chain of command needs to be followed and anyone who is skipping these people and going straight to the boss is just defying orders and needs to be give a stern talking to at the very least. The people in a structure are there for a reason and thus the right channels need to be followed. I don't think that we need to go to an extent where Sub Crew leaders can invite people into the family, they are there to over see a small minority of the family and make sure that everyone under them have someone to turn to when they need help. The sub crew leader need not worry about the rest of the family members are doing, that is someone else job. Noob walks back to his spot and lights up a cigar, waiting for the next few people to pass. |
