Dark in Detroit Started by: Yuri_Kazakov on Aug 29, '08 01:56
Only three days into his stay in Detroit and the power was already out. The storm had effectively turned the neighborhood from an insomniac's playground into a ghost town with only a few, strong gusts of wind. It didn't bother Yuri much, but he could tell by the growing hostility inside of the headquarters that it had put others on edge. Sleeplessness came with the job, and madness came with that when there was nothing to do after dark, and dark it was.

He had left the HQ shortly after the electricity went out. There wasn't a soul in sight. He peered into shop windows, expecting to see someone other than his reflection, but he was alone. No doubt all of the businesses had closed early that day, well, all of the legit businesses at least. The stillness was refreshing. Since emigrating to the United States, Yuri had had his share of the inertia of city life. Everything was always on the move, everyone had a meeting to keep. Briefly, he was reminded of home.

Ironically, he himself had a meeting to keep. Some gal down at the HQ had an idea when the electricity went out. She was probably trying to make enough of an impression on the boss to be made, whereas Yuri was pained at the prospect of spending the night playing solitaire by candlelight. So, he agreed to meet in an hour's time in front of the natural history museum.

He reached the building with thirty seconds to spare. He looked around to ensure no one was watching before ascending the wide steps and stepping behind a statue and out of sight. His accomplice was nowhere to be seen. He brought his wrist to eye-level and twisted it awkwardly until he caught the moonlight on the watch face. For a fleeting moment, he considered the notion that this was some sort of a set-up--that woman had it in for him, after all--and when he heard movement behind him, he was quick to pull his weapon and turn.

Immediately, he wished he had not.

It was the glare of the wrist watch that got Delilah's attention that someone else was on the steps with her. She had been leaning against one of the large pillars that held up the awning of the museum when she noticed the out line of Yuri, one of the members of the family she had told to meet her here.

They weren't the only ones out there tonight, Maxie, another associate was two pillars behind her and their was a security guard just around the building. Her and Maxie had been watching his routine for the past hour.

The power had gone out for the whole city grid and it seemed like it wasn't a big deal to anyone, maybe this stuff happened a lot. Detroit was a new city to Delilah, this might be something she'd have to get use to. A little bummer, but this was home now.

She motioned for Maxie to follow her, Yuri had slipped behind one of the statues on the other side of the wide stairs. Delilah made no sound as she crossed the open gap. She was very confident that no one was out there walking around that would care to call the cops on them for hanging out at the museum.

As she approached Yuri she must have made a bit of some noise because he quickly turned his gun on her.

Woah Yuri

She hissed.

Watch where you point that thing. This outfit is new and I really don't want to deal with the hospital tonight, specially with the lack of power.

The blackout made Maxie feel uneasy. She wasn't familiar enough with the city and the museum to feel comfortable about doing a job there in the dark. She was glad her and Delilah checked out the outside of the museum and watched the security guard for awhile. It put her mind a little more at ease.

Where in the hell is Kazakov? Are you sure he understood what you said?

Maxie questioned Delilah as they walked towards a statue. Before Delilah could respond Maxie saw Yuri. He had his gun aimed towards them. While Delilah snapped at him Maxie looked over her shoulder.

Shhh the security guard will be walking around here soon.

The three mobsters hid in the darkness behind the statue. Yuri still hand his gun in his hand and Maxie reached for hers.

With calm and steady steps, which echoed against the dense dark of the night, a silhouetted figure made his patrol in front of the museum. His flashlight held limp with his watchstick tucked at his side, you can hear the guard's radio buzzing...

Come in Anderson. Is your site clear? What's your 10/4? Over...

Almost done, Rob. Geez, don't get your panties all tied up in a knot. I'm sweeping the front right now and almost done with my patrol. Don't forget our little bet. You owe me that drink after our shift...

Yeah, yeah, just get it done. Meet you back in the office in half an hour. The camera caught something in it's vision around where you're at. Keep an open eye out.

*I'm not stupid...* the guard thought to himself.

In the shadows, the three mobsters hid behind the statue, with the guard only steps away from them. Yuri took a step forward with his gun drawn. Delilah stopped him. *No, not yet. Let's see what happens.*

The guard unmistakenly heard a shuffle of feet so faint if the night were any louder would have been drowned out. He slowly began inching towards the statue, drawing his gun. The light from his flashlight glowing at the foot of the statue. He's only moments from knowing the location of our fellow mafioso.

*WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!* He said, turning, revealing the location of our hunched hoodlums. With a thud, a figure behind smacked him on top of the head. With a final fall, the guard tumbled to the ground unconscious.

*Don't tell me you're gonna knock over this museum?*

It was Smith, looking on in dismay.

What the hell do you mean there's no blackout discount?

Heidi was being ejected, quite forcefully, through the front door of a tavern just down the block from the museum. For many, booze and business don't mix, but Heidi was smart enough to know that vodka mixes with everything. This clever bit of advice was negated, however, by the fact that she had been drinking bourbon.

Fine! I don't need your stupid bar anyway, and your ugly face too! You, you... jerk!

She removed one of her shoes and flung it at the man who had evicted her from her barstool, but it was a moment too late, and deflected harmlessly off of the closed door. She sniffled as she hunched down to reacquire her footwear, and nearly came to tears as she leaned against the wall trying half-heartedly with wild circular swings of her arm to place it back on her foot. Finally she accomplished this, and allowed her head to hang sadly, in celebration.

Oh shit!

Her jerked herself back to an upstanding posture and stared wide-eyed into the face of her watch. She had become so engrossed in her pre-... everything ritual, that she had forgotten that she had plans to attend to. A date of sorts, she had decided, though her male companion had just blinked a few times in response to her asking him out. And, well, okay, so maybe it wasn't a date-date, but that's not the important part, alright?

Heidi's coming, baby! Just hold on, you big ol' hunk of illiterate!

She hurried down the block to where they had arranged to meet. The unconscious guard didn't cause her pause in the least, except for the slight detour she took in order to kick him in the ribs as she rushed along her way. The rather crowded shadow across the courtyard betrayed Yuri's position.

Yuri! Yuri! Hey, sorry, I...

She stopped dead and eyed each of the other, erm, "accomplices", in turn.

Oh. Well hi there.

Her eyes narrowed as she turned them back to Yuri and whispered at him in a hiss.

You slut!

Yuri furrowed his brow in confusion at Heidi's greeting. He wasn't sure what she said, but her tone reeked of anger and her breath reeked of bourbon. He was about to press the issue, but the sudden appearance of headlights in the street below caused everyone to duck again behind the statue in a hurry. The car passed and the group collectively exhaled. Yuri was the first to speak.

OK. Now what we do?

He hadn't been privy to the details of the plan, though it probably wasn't due to mistrust. The others likely believed that he wouldn't have understood. There was a truth to that, and there wasn't a need to explain Yuri's role. He was a gun. That was all, and he was satisfied with it. He replaced his pistol in the holster and looked from person to person until someone spoke.
