Important Personals to be sent to your email Started by: Mars on Jul 18, '12 21:36

My suggestion is this...I think it should be possible to nominate to have personals delivered to the email address provided on start up.

Personally, I can only imagine a scenario where I would want the game contacting me via email to let me know whether or not I had been shot at. Some users however, may wish to have more information that that passed along - I guess, if it's possible, the user could select the information they wish to have sent through, which could vary from no info to every single thing in their personals. Perhaps they could select which tab to send through from the personals page?

On a related note, I would also like to have whispers sent to the users email. It would be nice to keep track of the whispers one gets through the years.

This isn't the first time I hear/read a similar idea, so for the record:

Personals used to be messaged as a PM on IRC. Around a year ago (?) this was limited to just online people and then completely removed.

There is a fairly recent suggestion of texting the personals: http://mafiareturns.com/comm/thread/277508
While not entirely the same idea, it has already got some replies and I believe the same arguments might apply here.

I think IRC still sends you messages if you are online subject to the bot working.

I stand corrected. You still get a PM on IRC for some personals, if you're online in the game.
Thanks, El_Nino.

Considering how easy it is to set up auto-forwarding and the likes in an email, I just don't see a way to make this work without turning it into a "as soon as anyone in the city gets attacked, everyone in the city knows about it" situation. Pre-war bg waves and other "sneaky" style attacks don't need to be made less feasible in my opinion. They're already near-impossible enough to pull off in my eyes.

Thanks all for responding.

Tosca, I've only seen the previous thread now. Massive apologies for being lazy and not looking before I post. In saying that, I do beleive that the previous thread differs to a significant enough extent...namely that they would look to send text messages. I guess my idea shouldn't cost money and doesn't equire any more private information from the users (phone number)...which seem to have been the main complaints from the previous thread. The other thread also stipulates that the service could be paid for with credits. I don't think it would be necessary to charge for this idea at all as it involves no cost that I can think of.

El_Nino, given that IRC is not available on phones..and I (as well as a good few others I think) have to play of f my phone these days, this was the next best idea I had failing being available on IRC throughout the day.

Sayyid,  I agree that this would be a little more difficult, but I also think the integration with email much as has been done with social networking is a positive step forward. It would make wars more difficult of course, but to me, that is an acceptable sacrifice.

I've always been a believer of having to actually be here...to be here. I think linking the game to IRC had benefits but also drawbacks.

I'm worried this could leave to more anonymity, e.g. "If something interesting happens it'll be emailed to me". Where as, you should be sat logged in to your account to know if something interesting happens!

Whispers I would have no problem with, but this could be stored in a document fairly easily.

I'd have to put a no vote to this suggestion, following the reasoning that both Sayyid and Grin put forward.

It will drastically affect the game dynamic, it will force smaller cities to "sit in their place", if they try do a stealthy attack before going in gor the big move. The response from the opposing side would basically make any attempt at a stealth attack pointless, especially with the email forwarding system that Sayyid mention. That one email from MafiaReturns, could wake a whole city with a few clicks.

The reason that Grin put forward I also agree with. As not everything you'd be aware of in real life. If you aren't there for whatever reason as the biggest party, then you'll only find out when you get to meet up your friends at discuss it. Given you may be able to phone one another, such a luxury is also benefitted here with human interaction. The same way it would be at a party your friends would be able to update and inform you of what they witnessed. The same way it should be here. Your friend witnessed your BG get shot they wake you.

But durden announcements hit Twitter ... so if I "Follow" MR and have twitter alerts on my phone...I'm 'there' w/o actually being there. I don't agree with getting an actual email notification, but I'd like to see the MR bot work correctly in IRC again. I haven't received a personal via IRC in ages

Report Post Tip

We can email notifications, and even text ones without any problems with the exception of being able to come up with a list of what "spoils the gameplay" versus "is harmless info to get".

Emails we can send for... close to free. Text messages do get spendy depending on what country, but most cell phones have either email support, or a direct email to text message like 2155551212@orange.co.uk type thingy.

I think this system could work if we could come up with a comprehensive list of whats save to give notification of, that doenst hurt gameplay, and make it so you can toggle each individual type of update.

I dont think that personals should be sent to your email address. As Grin already stated you should only know something has happened if you are in fact actually here. Not everyone has a cellphone so this would be unfair to those users. If you want to get online when something "interested" happens make some contacts and give out you cellphone number and tell them to text you when Durdens spawn, Wars happen, Or someone wacks backs.

If you want to save whispers I think you can copy and paste them for your own personal records. Im not trying to mean, just how I honestly feel. Everytime you get a whisper just copy and paste it to a notepad is my best suggestion to you.

However harmless whispers would be credit purchases, posts made in your threads, bank statement transactions.

As far as a making MR a profitable business goes this is a great idea. Anything that makes it more effortless on the consumer end will make the game easier to sell and this will do so. On the player end I think the sneak Attack takedown wars we have today are totally against the reason I enjoy this game so much. In an earlier age a war would last days sometimes even a week. So for me this suggesstion kills two birds with one stone. It sends my personals to a email so i don't have to copy save every time a new personal comes in, making it seemless for new users and It would also remove one of the worst things to come to this Thing of Ours, the sneak attack. As far as your complaint that small cities would suffer from this, not so a sneak attack yes can be useful, to some degree this would make you need to cordinate even more with your First Wave attack. For  small cities you would just need to make sure you train and cordinate properly. If you shoot all at once as you should then this isn't gonna make a huge difference.
