Patience? Started by: Marietta on Sep 12, '08 00:46
The dark and gloomy September sky began to drop light little rain drops from above, spattering sporadically in a speckling design across the street and the two women who were currently perched upon a black, iron wrought fence. Complete opposites in appearance they shared one trait; both were dressed in simple black dresses, the brunette with a black hat upon her head and the blond with her soft curls pulled back with two combs. I fucking hate rain, said the latter of the two, brushing the water droplets from the bare, pale skin of her arms. Looking up from her little black day planner Marietta Rossi shook her head silently, snapping open her black handbag and placing the book inside before closing it again. Her lips pressed together in anger and frustration she sighed softly to herself before fixing her green eyes upon Lily, her Left Hand and long time friend. Sadly, that wasn't the last funeral we have today. The next one for Ronnie is at the cemetery off of forty-third. Forever said she'd meet us there because she has an 'errand' to run.

The two exchanged a small glance and smirk; they knew exactly what 'errand' meant in Forever's book. She would show up late, her hair and clothing a mess, smelling much like the cologne her current beau wore.

"Alright," said Lily, amused, taking a drag of her cigarette and passing it over to Marietta. With a small grin the woman pressed it between her lips and took a large drag, letting the smoke filter through her throat and down to her lungs before letting it all out in a huff of white steam coming from her nostrils. I'm sick of this shit, Lils. I'm sick of another funeral every other freakin' day. When are people going to learn?

Lily wordlessly took the cigarette back from Marietta, taking one last long drag before dropping it on to the ground. The cement was already slick with a light coating of rain, extinguishing the white stick as it touched the ground, but the brunette used the toe of her black high heels to squash the lit end further. "I don't know Mari. I don't know. It's been hell this week."

You're telling me, the woman replied in a hasty tone, tipping her head to the side and gesturing for her friend to follow her. Silently the pair began to walk away from the fence bordering the Holy Cross cemetery and towards the main road that bordered it to the East. With narrowed eyes they both took a glance up and down the street, eventually turning to look at each other in confusion. "Where's Pedro?" Lily asked, fussing with her hat and a look of concern growing upon her face.

He's probably just running late. Don't worry, Marietta said, feeling a bubble of rage boiling inside of her. Pedro, her bodyguard and personal driver, was supposed to be waiting for them with the car. Since he was nowhere to be seen it was apparent that the two ladies would have to wait. In the rain. Exasperatedly she turned around, her high heels clicking on the sidewalk as she paced in place. Her legs felt tired from all the standing she had done at the service for one of her former business 'associates'. Another wave of anger washed over her and she quickly stomped back towards her friend. I just can't stand it! she exclaimed, throwing one of her hands into the air dramatically.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm sure Pedro is just around the corner..." Lily said, looking down directions down the street with her eyes wide.

No, no Lils. I don't care about that. I can't stand the people who just don't... care. I meant the jackasses. The impatient ones that we keep having to...

Lowering her voice an octave she leaned forward and whispered: wack!, before stepping back and allowing the woman her own space once more. "Oh!" Lily said in surprise. The woman paused for a moment before nodding in response. "I understand what you mean. I'm so frustrated too." A silence fell between them as Marietta began opening and closing her handbag obsessively. Her stomach felt as if it was in knots. I really do hate doing that to them, you know?

A wind picked up out of nowhere, scattering early autumn leaves across the sidewalk near their feet. Marietta watched one settle upon the toe of her black high heels before shaking her ankle, setting the leaf free to roam in the wind once more. "At least the service was nice," Lily's voice broke her thoughts. "Not a big turn out, but lovely anyway."

Marietta snorted in amusement. He wouldn't have even needed a fucking service if he would've just listened to me.

Breathing deeply to calm the feeling of anger and upset building within her chest Miss Rossi turned her head towards the brunette, who had found a seat on a small bench underneath a tree with heavy branches. Shuffling towards the bench she took a seat next to the woman, setting her purse on her lap and snorting once more.

What is it with kids these days? Do they think I'm going to lead them through the flames of Hell for my own amusement? I'm there for a purpose. I'm their family head for a reason. They should listen to me. They should respect me more than to- to disobey me.

Small giggles erupted from beside her. With a look of outrage and horror Marietta swiveled her head to look at Lily. And what is so funny?

"You. Why are you so outraged? What even happened with Ronnie?"

You don't know?! Marietta asked, her mouth dropping open in surprise. "No, no one bothered to tell me." Lily shrugged and placed on of her elbows on her knees, leaning her head into her hand. "So tell me, what's got you all in a fit?"

Fine. Swallowing hard and sighing, the woman cast her eyes downward as she recalled what had happened just three days prior. A couple of days ago he comes marching into my office. "Paddy!" he screamed. "Paddy pick pocketed me!" So I assess the situation. Seems Paddy was digging around in the pockets of a lot of people. None of the boys were available, so I told Ronnie personally- "I'll take care of it". My words. My exact words. "I'll take care of it."

He makes a smart ass remark. "See that you do", something or other. Anyway, at the time I had a meeting to get to, so I figured afterward I'd swing by and... Darting a nervous glance around she leans in towards Lily again and whispers ...figured I'd kill him for being a prick.

Lily nodded in agreement. "Only right. What happened then?"

With a loud laugh Marietta grips her knees with her hands until her knuckles turn white. While I was at the meeting Ronnie starts fuming. Goes and knocks on several office doors back at the headquarters, trying to either pay off or provoke someone into killing Paddy for him. He finds no one, obviously, who is going to help him so after pissing off a bunch of people he goes and shoots Paddy himself.

"Ouch," Lils murmured and Marietta nodded in agreement. What was I supposed to do? I can't afford a loose cannon in the family. No one really can. Business is business and when someone can no longer be functional with the rest of the unit...

She made a slashing gesture across her throat and shuddered in remembrance. It wasn't a good day.

"I'll bet."

When are people going to learn? Mari continued, as if she hadn't even heard Lily's response. Good things come to those who wait. Like, you know, life. Not dying. Promotions, opportunities. The hastier people are... the more reckless they act... how could they possibly ever see themselves as anything more than fish food?

"Patience is a virtue," said Lily, pulling another cigarette and a match out of her own purse. Lighting it she flashed a smile at her friend.

Patience is a mother fucking virtue, thank you, Lily. That is exactly it. Those who rush, who are... are... impetuous. What does that even serve? What can anyone possibly gain?

"It's a hard thing to deal with."

I don't like being the bad guy.

"I know you don't."

So when are people going to stop making me the bad guy? Staring at her friend she smirked and suddenly reached forward and grabbed the cigarette, taking a drag before handing it back. Oh well. Live and you learn, right? At least their next of kin will be able to figure things out from their mother or father's journals. Play it safe and play it smart and you end up, well, further than you would if you went the opposite way. You'll accomplish more and it will mean more, am I right?

"You are so right."

Narrowing her eyes she saw a small black Ford turning the corner a few blocks down. Ah, she said in excitement. There's my car. That must be Pedro. Come on, we've got to get going or we'll miss the beginning of the service. Lord knows I love it when everyone weeps over the whole 'mysterious death thing'.

Standing up and smoothing out her dress, Marietta gestured for Lily to follow, walking towards the curb to await the car. And put that fucking cigarette out. No smoking in my car.

"I cant believe Pedro was not there, he should of been there early even if he had to wait in car for an hour."

"And Ronnie even showed disrespect to himself with the way he had acted."

"Also Thank you for educating, with this speech was a Honour to listen to you."

Puts his hood up and makes his way back to the local bars.
