Report Post Tip

This was a very simple suggesstion, which involved whenever someone died, online or offline, their names would appear in red in the online list.

It was generally met with good feedback, and a delay of 30 seconds was discussed, so as not to give away a war too quickly. However, there was the argument that IRC has the instant notification, so why shouldn't the game?

It was also suggessted that a period between 5 and 10 minutes would be a good amount of time for the red names to remain there.

The idea was suggessted by enkindle, so we can safely assume that it's not too much of a big ask on the coding side, and is definitely possible.

Any thoughts?

Originally, I was against this as I despise the IRC notifications for just about everything that happens in the game.

However, that suggestion isn't this so I decided to give it another whirl.

I don't really understand why this was changed to begin with as one of the biggest satisfactions for me was when people we had killed logged in. Always a good time for a casual "check out XXX logging in dead". I liked that feeling and this gets close to it.

I would prefer to see it as it used to be, you show up red on the 60 second list when you first login but to accommodate incogs, never again.

I can't really get past the whole Look everyone something is happening alarm system this creates if it is immediate. I'd like some sort of delay, even if it was only a 30 second one, and 5 minutes should be more than enough constant redness.

Report Post Tip

I think this should be fairly straightforward, there isn't much that can be said for the idea itself, its simple and doesn't offer many cons at all. I see no reason to go ahead with this, provided some form of delay is built in.

Report Post Tip

I am curious why people think there should be some sort of delay?

I for one think it should appear exactly the same as it does in #divinelunacy so as to remove any potential advantage people have from sitting in that channel with alerts turning the house lights on and off when things are announced.

If it is staying as immediate in #dl, then make it show immediately in game, if you want to delay it delay it in both.

Report Post Tip

I'm honestly not really in favour of this - As Grin said, it's bad enough that we have notifications in DL to begin with. If this ends up being implemented, could this feature possibly be narrowed down to only members of the victim's family, albeit with a delay? It seems reasonable that the first people to know about this outside of the group of killers would be the victim's immediate crew, so it goes to reason that they would enjoy this feature before the masses.

Report Post Tip

Do we look to stop the notifications in DL then as well?

Report Post Tip

Ive never been a fan of the DL notifications, I dislike IRC having so much integration with the game, a tool that many benefit from but not all have access to isn't helpful for the user base imo. Though I feel that would require a whole new suggestion in itself to start discussing any impact on the DL side of things?

That said, having given it more thought im not as bothered with the delay aspect. My intial thoughts on that were the element of surprise, but on reflection I guess 30 seconds longer isn't going to matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Report Post Tip

The one point why I think if we go ahead it should be immediate is because it is information that is made available to people who spend their time in DL.

{People have IRC scripts which kick out warnings, make sounds, turn the power off in the neighbourhood when certain things are said. Durdens, War, Obit, Facebook. If someone had a data mining application that did something similar in game I would expect that they would get a game ban for scripting. So why not make deaths flash up in game}

One of the best things about being involved in a takedown was being in #DL when the obits shot up, imagine how cool it would look if the 60 second list went nuts with the red dead.

Report Post Tip

{I would definitely like to do away with #DL notifications. One of the worst features ever coded into the game.}

I can't really fault El_Nino's thinking on this. The current system creates something of an imbalance between those who have IRC geared to help them monitor the game despite not being active in it, and those who don't. This would at least make it so that anyone active in the game would see what those people who live on IRC see.

I still greatly dislike the whole situation and I'm not sure if this is just another wrong following earlier mistakes.

Report Post Tip

Honestly because of the sheer fact this advantage is provided to IRC users I would deem it fair to users that don't use IRC if this was coded in. This will benefit cellphone users and most of them don't log into IRC with their cellphones anyways. Why are we trying to control a delay? The delay would work just like it does on the durdens, as they do not appear red right away either. In fact I think it's approximately 1 minute as far as delay. So I don't think we should have to figure out a delay as one already exists.

Either way people get haywire and call people up when a war turns up regardless so honestly this wouldn't be a major issue during war time. However this could end up figuring out when a player has been killed in cold blood, most rogues set up so you would obviously recognize the bold and underlined new name on the "Past few minutes" List.

I am for this suggestion at this time.

Report Post Tip

I think the main reasoning for a delay it to make sure people can get pro wacks but as it's already been said there is no delay on irc so maybe people will stay logged into the game more if they got the same instant notification as those on irc do.

Report Post Tip

Would a 30 second delay make that much of a difference? I think the argument that dl notifications are instant is valid so I would say that the name showing up in red should be instant. I believe 5 minutes is definitely a long enough period for them to remain actively red.

Report Post Tip

Well we seem to have a consensus on them showing red for 5 minutes so how about 2 votes, 1st for the implementation & 2nd for if there is a delay or not if the vote passes.

Report Post Tip

I'm not sure if that's possible. I will confirm with enkindle/Squishy and come back to you.

Report Post Tip

What I would suggest is vote on this idea as a whole. If (rather, when) the vote passes, start up a second thread to vote for the delay. Grin can start the vote asap and make it a short vote time.

Report Post Tip

Err, that is to say if someone starts a thread in this forum, grin can turn it into a voting thread.

Report Post Tip

I'll give this another couple days and then trigger a staggered vote as suggested above by enkindle.

Report Post Tip

Why do people even want a delay in the first place?

Report Post Tip

Multi posting ftw.

A delay to me is a pointless exercise the reasons being as follows:

1) You get instant notification of death in #DL

2) There is the obits list showing who has died.

None of the above have a delay so why should a red thing have a delay?

If the argument is a pro wack, we are not showing who took the shot just that someone has died. It is exceedingly rare that joe rogue is one of only 2 people online to give him away as the shooter.
