As are most of you, I am a firm believer in higher education. Yet we continue to have members from all cities who run around demonstrating behaviors that clearly indicate how little education they have, or how limited their retention level is. Some folks think this makes for good entertainment, and I would have to agree with that. On the other hand, it has a way of causing undue and preventable chaos that often leads to untimely deaths or all out war.

With that said, my question today is, do you think our current academic offerings are sufficient or do we need to consider revamping? Do we need to require all members to attend their family university? Or should we offer a commonly run school open for anyone from any family? The Mafia Bible is still a valuable tool, but is it enough?

Comments and/or suggestions from the well educated and the newcomers alike will be most welcome.

I've never been a fan of mafia universities. The two establishments are at either end of the spectrum as far as I'm concerned. Whilst, of course, I do not mind taking the occasional associate under my wing (as per my duty, really), I don't really agree with the overall concept of any sort of academic initiative.

It is my belief, and I'm sure some will disagree, that to force the knowledge onto the younger blood creates a generation of coddled, dependant mobsters; and for me, that is just no good for business.

That being said, a regime of my family is currently working on a newer version of The Mafia Bible, and I and all of my members pledge our support to newcomers to our thing, within reason obviously.

I think higher education is great BUT, most of the rules and things people shouldn't do are common sense.. i believe many do it because either

A) they thing they wont get caught

B) they are bored and are trying to get a little excitement

C) they are just pissed off

The point is we cant keep everyone happy, even if we tried.

yet i think the option of having higher education or a mentor to guide you through some things should not be taken away from anyone.

The simple fact is that people are getting stupider. Common sense is no longer "common". Every Lia Vazzi, Miguel, and Mithras that leaves La Cosa Nostra is replaced by some fucking mong who cannot even spell his own name.

The traditional way of La Cosa Nostra is the "mentor system", where an experience mobster takes a young one with potential under his or her wing, and molds them into a great mobster in their own right. A Mafia Bible is a useful tool, and one version or another has been with us for as long as I can remember. Other institutes of learning are antithetical to the mafia way of life and usually do not get much participation.

There is currently enough material available to teach any new immigrant. The trick is getting them to take advantage of what is available to them. Most are too stupid or too lazy to bother, and end up suffering for their mistakes.

Excellent points from everybody, but as usual, FP hits the nail squarely on the head. Appreciated folks.

At the end of the day, the guy who thinks before acting, puts effort into his labors and pays respects where they are due will do well. The symbolism and tradition of Our Thing will come with time and experience, but it all comes down to using your head (understanding the reaction behind your actions) and navigating the landmines, knives and flying bullets from the bottom to the top.

I'm not a huge fan of these either. By all means, have inexperienced mobsters under the wing of an old head, let them ask questions, read the bible and so on. However, with the full on "university" approach, as Branston says, we end up with coddled mobsters who don't really understand the mafia ways fully. It can also be counter-productive dumping too much information in the hands of those that are unable to pick out the crucial, from the significant, from the trivial, due to that very same lack of experience.

The fact is, there is no equivalent for good old experience. Of course, it will mean they trip up along the way and have to be punished, but if there's anything my forefathers have passed along the bloodline, it's that there really is no better way to learn than by making your own mistakes and being held responsible for your actions. Anyone that is destined to make it will quickly find their feet and progress in this world. Those that are not, won't go far. There's nothing wrong with that.

I most agree.

Although you can point new members in the good direction its up to themselfs to make it happend.

However,

It still happends that new members are shot when the are 2 days old and still havent found a family. Maybe they are thick and deserve to be put out of there misery

or maybe they should recive a letter instead of a bullit...
