Blast From the Past Started by: Marietta on Sep 27, '08 00:57
A feeling stirred within her chest as she walked down the small road, her hands safely nestled inside the pockets of her overcoat and a smile etched upon her face. Fall truly was the best time of the year; watching leaves fall softly from the branches in the trees that lined the Detroit street only to land on the ground in their final resting place, Marietta Rossi, Mob Boss of Detroit, honestly felt that there could be no finer moment in her life.

Only a short time ago she had risen above many complications to become what she was today. A small business owner with an estranged family and a past worthy of the silver screen, she had faced all adversaries to end up successful. Rich beyond her wildest dreams, a sense of accomplishment, and more friends and 'family' than she could count on both of her hands. Life had taken an upswing from her tumultuous youth years, and now, on the verge of her thirtieth birthday, Marietta allowed the smile to consume her face and the thoughts of all her fortunes to grace her mind.

"What are you smiling at?" came a voice, deep, interrupting. With narrowed green eyes Marietta turned her head to gaze upon her pal, her confidant, her bodyguard Pedro. He was walking beside her, taking one step to her three as his size was massive, but his head was craned downwards to look at the woman.

Well, I was having a decent self-praising moment, but you completely ruined it. And step away, you're walking to close to me and you're invading my space bubble.

With a silent eye-roll to himself the man took a half step to the left, putting more distance between the pair. "I was just curious," he said quietly, placing his hands in his own pockets to mirror Marietta's own posture.

I know, the blond woman responded, sighing heavily and taking in the cool, crisp autumn air. I was just... taking stock of my life. I don't know what it is, Pedro, but for some reason I feel like now- this moment, this day,- is the beginning of the rest of my life.

"Ah. Mid-life crisis," Pedro said with a smirk. Marietta quickly pulled her hand out of her pocket and punched the man in the shoulder. Oh, you're so funny, she said sarcastically, suppressing a small smile. The pair continued their walk silently, passing by small, cozy shops that lined either side of their path. At last a familiar building caught Mari's eye and with a small "Oh!" she stopped suddenly.

This is it, she said to Pedro, pulling her hands out of her coat and pawing at her hair to fix the windswept mess. A large smile crossed her face and she stepped forward, giving the man a hug and kiss on the cheek.

"You sure you don't want me to come with you?" Pedro asked, his face turning a reddish tint in embarrassment from the public display of affection. Shaking her head and giving a small giggle Marietta crossed her arms across her chest. I'm just meeting Lily and Maxie to discuss a few things. What could possibly go wrong?

Reluctantly the man tilted his head and looked at her, smiling. "Alright. Give me a call if you need me, Mari." Placing his hand on her chin and staring into her eyes for a moment he finally broke free, turning back against the wind to head back to The RIOT! headquarters. Marietta watched him walk until he had turned the street corner, finally snapping her head upwards to view the building before her.

Giovanni's. The best damn restaurant in all of Detroit. Crumbling brickwork and cracked green paint upon the doorway and windowsills did nothing to advertise the fact that within the broken down building was the best Italian cuisine in America, hands down. Giovanni and his wife Stefania were lovely, polite, and barely spoke a word of English. The latter fact alone made this Marietta's favorite place to meet when serious business needed to be discussed. With a deep breath the woman walked towards the door, pushing it inwards.

A small amount of dust stirred through the air before her and instinctively she began to wave her hand in front of her face. "Bonjourno!" the booming voice of Giovanni immediately met her. "Marietta, bella!" he said, rushing from behind the kitchen counter and embracing her. The woman swore she felt her ribs crack in several places before the man let go. Giving a polite laugh she inclined her head into a small nod.

I am meeting people here today, she said slowly, knowing the man's limited English would flounder otherwise. Where shall we sit?

"Oh! Here, here!" he said, giving a hearty laugh and leading the way through the small dining room. Marietta followed him to a small and cozy booth towards the back of the restaurant, red vinyl leather and enclosed by a rather large wall of dying flora. "Private. Private for business, bella Marietta," the man said, waving his arm invitingly. With a smile she sat down, scooting in and settling in.

Thank you, Giovanni. This is perfect.

Nodding several times the older gentleman made his way back to the kitchen. Slowly shrugging off her coat she kept her eyes fixed towards the small, rectangular windows in the front of the shop. Any minute now they would arrive. Picking up her menu her eyes quickly scanned the daily specials before placing the card back onto the table nervously. Any minute...

Walking on a plane that was soon departing Los Angles Maxie hoped she would be able to catch up on some much needed sleep during the flight to Detroit. As soon as she found her seat she sat down and closed her eyes. Sleep didn't come right away. Maxie knew it wouldn't. She only closed her eyes to avoid talking to whoever sat next to her. She hated talking to strangers and hated meaningless chit chat even more.

When Maxie finally fell asleep the reoccurring dream she had returned. What she saw was so clear it felt real. A woman and two small children were at a funeral home. They were all crying. The woman for her husband and the children for their father. Maxie felt responsible for their grieving. She had so much blood on her hands she didn't know who's funeral it was. It could have been the first person she killed years ago or the man in Los Angeles she killed a few hours before her flight home.

"Damn it." Maxie cursed when she woke up. She rubbed her eyes, hoping to rub away the images she saw in her sleep. She didn't understand why she was having the dream. She never felt guilty when she was doing her job. When she aimed her gun and pulled the trigger she didn't care if she was killing someone's husband and father. The feeling of guilt only plagued her when she slept. She wondered if any of her associates in the business had the same problem. It could be why so many of them didn't sleep well, Maxie thought as she walked off the plane in Detroit.

Outside the airport Maxie got into a taxi and told the driver to take her to Giovanni's Restaurant. She was meeting Marietta and Lily there for dinner and to talk about business. Buying drugs in Los Angeles, a city not controlled by the mafia, was getting risky. There was a lot of problems from the police recently. They were either making big busts or trying to shakedown criminals for a big pay off. Maxie didn't mind bribing a few policemen, but she preferred to take out the ones who held their hands out like they deserved something they did nothing to earn.

Going into the crowded restaurant Maxie smelled the Italian food. The scent was comforting. It made her glad to be home. Giovanni's was a regular hang out for her and other members of The Riot. A group of them usually went there for dinner every night. Giovanni always treated them like royalty and made them feel at home.

After exchanging greetings with the owner Maxie walked with him towards the back of the restaurant where he told her Marietta was waiting. When Maxie saw her boss she sensed something was wrong or something was missing. She realized what it was and looked around the restaurant. When she didn't find what she was looking for she quickly approached Marietta's table and looked at her with concern.

Why are you sitting here alone? Where in the hell is Pedro?

Lily was supposed to have been to Giovanni's to meet the ladies two hours ago. She hoped they wouldn't be too peeved at the fact that she wasn't there at the original meeting time. Lily was in her loft, she had overslept from a long day of business and headaches. She decided to take a quick cat nap and didn't set her alarm. She rarely needed to as she was usually good about her timing. Not this time though.

Damn it! I can't believe I overslept, I'm going to be in some shit when I get to the restaurant.

Marietta hated waiting long, and Maxie was less patient. Lily thought she would just put some blame on the baby. The first trimester was always the hardest, damn morning sickness and fatigue.

She ran to get ready, she didn't have much time to worry about what she was going to wear or how perfect her hair and makeup looked. She grabbed her coat, placed some powder and lipstick on quickly, grabbed her purse and stormed out the door. Walking down the stairs she hoped a cab would be passing any time now.

Passing the local corner store, Lily figured she should at least do a quick job and hope that Marietta looked past her tardiness. She walked in, grabbed the nearest snack she could reach and walked over to the counter, brandished her gun and demanded the cash. The cashier looked too puzzled to think and immediately handed the contents of the drawer to her. Lily rushed out of the store with a smile forming over her face.

They never suspect a lady carrying a baby could do such a thing.

Lily brushed her long brown hair from her face, placed there by the cool autumn breeze. She flagged down a passing cabby and hopped in the cab. The driver turned to her and asked where they would be heading.

Giovanni's please. Can you make it snappy, I'm late for dinner with the girls. I need to be there as of...oh, two hours ago.

The cab driver nodded and sped off down the road. Lily had to hold onto the back of the passenger seat a couple times because the driver really listened to the hastiness in her voice when she said she was in a hurry. Finally after what seemed like forever, but was only twelve minutes they arrived at the front of the restaurant. Lily threw the driver a twenty and he smiled as she went to open the door.

Keep the change, you got me here very quick. she said as she was closing the vehicle door

Lily rushed through the door and straight into Stefania who greeted her with a smile and started to place her hand on Lily's belly.

I see a bump Lily!Stefania smiled with joy in her eyes

Lily looked at her and just gave her a quick hug and a kiss on either cheek, trying to be as polite as she could but wanting to let her know she was sort of in a hurry.

Are Marietta and Maxie still here? I'm quite late in meeting them for dinner.

Stefania smiled and directed Lily toward the back of the restaurant and halfway down pointed to the booth the ladies were sitting at. Boy, did they looked annoyed as Lily drew closer to the table.

Taking a seat next to Maxie, Marietta just started at Lily.

Where the F....She started in, before Lily could cut her off

I'm so sorry, guys. I overslept and the baby would not let me rest at all. So, what have I missed?
