I had been out of America for a few years and coming back to it was a bit of a change to me. Things had swiftly changed since I'd been gone, and there was a different kind of people floating around now. Majority of them knew what was what, and who was who. Me? I didn't have a fucking clue. I guess that was due to the fact that I had taken a bullet to the shoulder a few years back and got spooked into leaving the country for a while. Taking a trip to the old country wasn't something that I ever intended on doing... But it probably saved my life. Coming off the boat, I took to wondering the streets looking for a job. Anything to fill the hours and to earn a few bucks. Hell, I used to be somebody. But this somebody turned into nobody with no job or money to show for it. Fuck it... I just had to get back into the old life. They did always used to say... Once you become a member of the underground world, there ain't no going back. Guess they was right.
"Forgive me sir, I didn't mean to come across as rude. I've been away a few years and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. See, I used to be a fella of this... Line of work you're into. Things was different back then, but times are forever changing. Reckon you could bring me up to speed? I wanna know about these shores now. Tell me, what brought on the change eh?"
I took a drag from the cigarette that I was smoking on and I shook the fella's hand that I was talking to. I didn't catch his name... Then again, he didn't catch mine.
"Name's Sonny Cavalli. Pleased to meet you fella." |

The man I'd been talking to wore a bright green suit. Kinda reminded me of somebody I'd once known. He seemed friendly enough. I took a drag from the cigarette and I flicked some of the ash onto the pavement. The night was wearing thin, and I was still without a roof for the night. The streets used to be filled with fuckers that wanted to roll over the little guys.
"Thanks for your kind words sir. Your name might be?" |

A small voice pierces through the thin Chicago air, and Big Daddy hears the words of Sonny on the corner. He turns to hear the rest of it, but his speech was short, and to the point. Interested, Daddy walks over to Sonny and shakes his hand.
"Sonny, nice to meet you. My name is..." He laughs to himself, pausing for a moment. "...Everyone around here just calls me Big Daddy. But I think I may ask you the question.
Sonny looks at him curiously. Tilting his head slightly like a young puppy.
"You asked what brought the change. I'm asking you... what brough you here? It's a drastic change from any means of life. And I suspect you have your reasons." |
