Toby was born into an Irish immigrant family. He was a second generation Irish-American living in New York city.

Toby had high aspirations for his life, his father was a successful business owner, and Toby thought, with some luck, he would follow in his footsteps.

Toby lost his mother to pneumonia when he was still just a child, so most of his time was spent working with his father in his bar. Thinking about it now it makes sense to him now why his father always insisted it was safer at the bar than at home.

One night, after closing up the bar Toby's father was gunned down in the street right outside the door. The official Police report called it a mugging gone wrong, but Toby knew that wasn't the truth.

Toby was there when his father was shot. He was the one who found his father laying in the middle of the street, still breathing. Toby can still recall the mext moment which would forever change his life.

Toby dropped next to his father.

"Who did this?! What happened! HELP!" Toby's father motioned for him to lean in closer.

"At.. least you're safe.. Find Sa- Sammy.. Garcini.. He will be.. able to explain.. everyth..." His eyes go dark, and Toby slumps down. The sound of distant sirens grows louder.

Toby sits alone in his house, thinking. Toby looks at a piece of paper with the name Sammy Garcini scribbled on it. Toby picked up the phone and called a friend.

"Hey. Yeah, I'm alright. Hey, I need you to do me a favor. Yeah, I'm looking for someone. Sammy Garcini. Downtown? Thanks." Toby hangs up the phone and grabs his coat.

Toby waves down a taxi and gets in.
"Downtown." Toby's cab flies off. In the back of the cab, Toby shifts his hand to his back and tucks his dad's .38 revolver into his pants. He wasn't sure of his intentions but whoever Sammy was he knew who killed his father and he wasn't leaving without knowing the truth.

Toby stops the cab and gets out continuing on foot. Toby spots the building his friend told him about. As Toby approaches the door, a large man steps in front of him and stops him.

"Where ya think you're gettin' to."

Toby tries to shove his was pass him, but can't.

"Get the hell out of my way! I need to speak with Sammy Garcini."

"Oh yea? Well he ain't acceptin' walk-ins today. So beat it, ya little shit!"

Toby, now teeming with anger, pulls his revolver on the man.

"I need to speak with Sammy now!" Toby points the gun at the man "Either you let me in or I'll make you let me in."

As the Toby is making a scene in front of the door, a well dressed man smoking a cigar open the door and looks out.

"What the fuck is going on out here? Who the fuck is this kid?"

The doorman, seemingly forgetting about the gun pointed at him, turns to the well dressed man.

"Sorry Sir. Just another nobody tryin' to see ya. No worries Boss, I'll get rid of-"

Toby waves his gun about and interrupts the doorman.

"You must be Sammy! I need to speak with you, now!"

Sammy, still smoking his cigar, looked thoroughly unimpressed

"Alright kid. Why don't you put that gun down before you get hurt. What's this all about?"

Toby lowers his revolver, but keeps it in hand. Just in case.

"My name is Toby and my father was murdered outside his bar last night. I want to know why."

Sammy doesn't change his expression, but instead turns and motions for Toby to follow him inside. Sammy leads him into his office and takes a seat.

"Please. Have a seat. Want a drink?" Toby tucks his gun back into his waistand and takes a seat. "Do you smoke?" Sammy puts the drink down on the desk in front of Toby and holds a cigar out towards Toby.

"So, you're Toby? I'm not sure how much you know about your father's business, but we became close business partners over the recent years."

Toby looked confused.

"But I was always helping him at the bar. I've never seen you before. What do you mean you were partners?"

Sammy sat back in his chair and put his feet up on the desk.

"Your father came to me a few years ago asking for a loan to start his bar. The banks wouldn't finance him, so he came to me."

Toby looked around the room, then back at Sammy.

"I don't understand. Who are you? Some loan shark?"

Sammy laughed. "Sometimes, I play many roles in this society. Toby, your father worked for the mob. Your father was a good man, his death was a major loss for all of us. How would you like to take his place in our organization?"

Toby sat dumbstruck for a moment. Then slammed his hands on the table.

"NO! My father was a good man. He would never get involved with you... criminals!"

Sammy drops his feet to the ground and stood up.

"Your father was a good man. Good is a relative term. We can offer you a new home, money, and a family. Won't you consider my offer?"

Toby stands up and moves towards the door.

"I don't want anything to do with you people."

Sammy sets his drink on the desk and turns to face the door.

"Don't you want to know who killed your father?" Toby stops. "We can find out who did it. Toby moves back towards the desk and sits down.

"Glad to see you reconsidered." Sammy smiles "In fact, once I heard about what happened I already took the liberty of hunting the fucker down myself. He is in the next room."

Toby remained silent, but felt for his gun again. Sammy gets up from his seat and motions for Toby to follow. He leads him down the hall to a closed door, and pushes it open.

Inside was an empty room, with a bruised and beaten man sitting on a single chair in the middle. Sammy steps aside and motions Toby into the room, shutting the door behind him.

"This is the dumb bastard who thought he could get away with killing one of my associates." Sammy put his hand on Toby shoulder.

"Listen kid. I'll make this real easy on you. Kill this man, and you'll be a member of the family."

Toby looks at the gun in his hand and then back at the man in the chair.

"Come on kid. Just do it, that fucker killed your father. Get it over with and we'll take care of you the rest of your life."

Toby looked back at his father's revolver in his hand. Taking a moment to appreciate the situation, Toby raises the gun to the man's head.

This was the moment that would alter his life forever. Toby closed his eyes and pulled the trigger. Toby felt a slap on his back and heard the door open, as Sammy was leaving he turned back to Toby.

"Welcome to the Family, kid."
